Summary
Hanna is seventy-five years old. She lives alone in a small apartment in Berlin. She has a daughter, Julia, who lives in the same city but visits rarely. Hanna has been feeling tired and weak. She goes to the doctor. The doctor tells her that she has cancer. It is advanced. She has six months, maybe less. Hanna does not cry. She does not ask questions. She just nods. She goes home and sits in her chair. She thinks about her life. She thinks about the things she has done. She thinks about the things she has not done. She decides to write a letter to Michael. She owes him an explanation. She does not know if he is still alive. She writes anyway.
