“Come on!” they called as they disappeared into the tall grass. It was the hot season, which of course meant the grass was even more discolored than usual. It glowed almost golden in the light of the late afternoon sun. Now was not the time for poetry. Theta had completely vanished into the grass. Likely frolicking at this very moment. Koschei rolled their eyes and let out a long suffering sigh.

Theta wasn’t really quite all there all the time. They were the most intelligent individual Koschei had ever met, but they were also prone to zoning out during class, sighing and daydreaming, yet still managing to retain every single detail. They had no idea how their brain worked. Koschei parted the grass and followed after them.

There was a small trail of crushed grass, but the golden stalks still stood tall, arching up towards the burnt orange sky the way the citadel did. It looked like a bubble. A beautiful, fragile bubble floating through the hot air. They shook the thoughts off as soon as they came.

“Kos!” Theta shouted, their head briefly appearing above the stalks as they jumped. Koschei smiled and took off running in their direction, the other Time Lord’s laughter reverberating distantly. Theta could never stay still for long periods of time. They always needed to be up and about, running, jumping, whatever. They loved running the most. They were much faster than Koschei, always leading the other to stumble after them as they ran. Sometimes they would lose each other during the chase, but would always end up back in each other’s arms again.

Because that was the way it was. Because they were meant to be. Koschei ran after them, the grass tearing up their skin as they ran, the other always a few steps ahead. “Slow down!” they called. The other laughed and stopped to look, so they took that as an opportunity to tackle them. They both went down laughing, the grass biting at their bodies and faces.

Koschei’s mouth immediately devoured Theta’s in a kiss, their deep hunger taking over. They didn’t quite understand the feeling. The desire to mar every single millimeter of Theta’s body until it was clear that they were theirs. To bite, and bite, and still hunger for more. Like a beast. But for now, they just settled on kissing the love of their life. Kissing them like they were possessed, yes, but just kissing them. Kissing them until neither of them could breathe anymore, even with their respiratory bypass. Koschei wished they could survive off the air in Theta’s lungs.

“Caught you,” they whispered against the mouth of the other Time Lord.

“That’s because you cheated,” Theta whispered back.

“I did not cheat,” they said, scowling. I would have never caught up with you because you are so stupidly fast. “I never have a fair chance to begin with.”

“Love you too,” Theta said, shoving them off. Koschei made a few disgruntled sounds as they rolled over to stare up at the sky with them.

“It’s beautiful,” they said after a while.

“I know. But you’re more beautiful,” Theta said. Koschei smacked them and they giggled.

“I think the sky is more beautiful than me.”

“Agreed.” Koschei shot Theta an incredulous look.

The sky truly was beautiful. The sky was a beautiful burnt orange, the same shade as the fire that burned inside them both.
