Work Text:
“Mr. Jarrus, I think you should ask Hera out.”
Kanan blinked a few times and stared at his student. “What?”
“I just think you’d be nice together.” Ezra shrugged. “Your personalities vibe or whatever, and you already have something in common.”
“Working on the same movie?”
“No, us.” The teen enthusiastically gestured to himself and his teenage co-star, who were sitting facing each other at their shared table. “Besides you, she’s the person on set who cares about us the most. That’s got to mean something.”
“Do you just want your favorite people on set to be together?” Kanan asked with raised brows.
“Maybe a little,” he admitted. “But I do really think you’d like each other.”
A sigh escaped as he leaned back into his desk chair. “Sabine, do you have an opinion?”
“Most Hollywood marriages end in divorce,” she cynically commented, eyes still on her computer. “So what’s the point? Not to mention dating when you’re an actor means endless media attention and everyone judging your relationship. I don’t know why anyone would even try.”
“Uhg,” Ezra rolled his eyes. “It’s like you don’t even want to be here.”
“I’m happy being here,” she retorted, quickly gesturing to the on-set classroom they were in. “I just hate–”
“Everything else?” he filled in.
“I was going to say the total lack of privacy, agency, and dignity that comes with being in the industry,” she paused, “but that works too.”
“Whatever.” Ezra faced his teacher once again. “If I start acting like that when I turn sixteen, I think I would just kill myself.”
“Ezra,” Kanan began.
“Right, mandated reporter.” Ezra snapped his fingers. “That was a joke. Unlike what I said about you and Hera.”
“Mhm. And what make you think someone who you think will become an A-List actress–”
“I know she’s going to become an A-List actress!”
“Okay,” Kanan conceded. “Why would someone who is about to become an A-List actress want to date a teacher?”
“Well, I know she’s making more than I am, and that means that finances definitely won’t be an issue,” Ezra so helpfully pointed out. “And I don’t know if you’ve looked in a mirror recently, but you could totally be an actor too.”
If only the kid knew. “Even with the broken nose?”
“Actually,” he straightened up, “my agent told me I should never get a nose job because it is something unique about me. Trust me, the ladies totally dig it.”
Kanan held back a laugh. “Right, because you’re fourteen and know everything about what women want.”
“I do.” He leaned back into his chair smugly, lifting two of the tennis balls in a way that almost deemed a safety warning. “Last week, two women asked for my phone number.”
Sabine gave him a massive side eye. “Kata wanted it to play Roblox with you, and our makeup artist technically asked for your guardian’s phone number.”
“That’s irrelevant!” Ezra frantically countered. “Especially since we’ve both only ever had half a girlfriend.”
“Half?” Kanan asked.
“Middle school situationship,” they responded in synch.
At least the kids were bonding, even if it was over that. He’d been trying to get them to become friends for two weeks now, so he was just happy it was working. “Okay then.”
“Anyways,” Ezra got right back to the topic Kanan would rather avoid, “I’m going to convince Hera to come in here to say hi. I guarantee that once she meets you, she is going to be swooning, and so will you.”
Kanan highly doubted that the next top actress would be able to sweep him off his feet, considering that he had been working with them for a combined decade. Though, from how the kids described her, she did sound nicer than the average stars he’d worked with. Even Cal had told him that she was great to work with once he'd been told they’d be on the same set. And it wouldn’t be a bad idea to talk to the other person who seemed to be looking after the kids.
“Well,” he eventually said, “you can try. But, first you have to finish that algebra worksheet.”
Ezra’s joyful expression fell. “I thought you forgot about that.”
