Work Text:

"Dammit... I conjured another one?" The little jester says as she munches on a sandwich while her back is turned against the ghost of a memory.

"Rude. Stop ignoring me" the bunny tugs her hat trying to get even just a speck of her attention.

Her eyes gaze at her cup's reflection showing the way it moves, the cocky way it talks, and its fake smile looking exactly like the one from her memories.

You're not him.

She keeps her back turned, trying to ignore it.

It scared the shit out of her the first time it appeared. She was just laying down gazing at the stars, reminiscing about that day a little crack slipped through his facade. A little talk, a peep of who he is beneath. She laid to the side and there he was, just staring at her.

"What are you looking at?" he said in a haughty tone she's too familiar with.

"Jax?" She whispers.

She stares at him for a minute. A purple bunny beside her like it's the most natural thing in the world.

"I'm hallucinating" she scoffed yet her hands reaches out toward him expecting nothing but air, but then it felt solid. Felt real.

"What the fuck?!" The jester jumps back, her breath heaving, and eyes spiraling.

"Y-you-" her voice shakes.

A second he was there another second he's not.

It was a conjure.

A copy. A fake. A ghost.

A walking memory that disappears when she stops reminiscing.

The conjure only lasts for a few minutes. Often poofing out of existence the moment she snaps out of focus. Maybe it takes a lot of processing to maintain it's form, she doesn't want to know.

Looking at it feels wrong.

Guilt eats at her as she feels a smidge of happiness every time the copy appears. The relief of seeing him beside her like he belongs there felt like knife twisting and digging deeper in her digital flesh.

The copy appears from time to time whenever she dwells on the past. Only lasting for a few minutes, often poofing out of existence the moment she snaps out of focus. Maybe it takes a lot of processing to maintain his form, she doesn't want to know.

Pomni looks at him in the reflection of a cup while she's getting more and more perplexed as she stares at him longer.

Not him, it. She corrects herself, desperately trying to stay afloat in reality as the delusion of a paradise where he's there tries to drown her.

Again. It. She shakes her head.

"I'll bring more of these to Jax's tent later" she chews as the the copy tugs her hat harder.

"When is this thing gonna disappear?" She continues to munch on the sandwich on hand as it continues to tug her hat.

She closes her eyes trying to make the copy disapppear.

Then the tuggung stopped.

"Is he it gone?" she wonders.

A few moments of silence filled the cafe.

"I love you" the copy says in a cruely soft tone.

Her eyes immediately blows open as her hands stiffened, letting go of the sandwich. She turns her head towards its his direction.

Empty.

He's gone.

She lingers at the sight on nothing.

"Jax would never say that"

Notes:

There's a lil comic adaptation of this out there.

The comic has a better reading experience in IG cause Twitter censored some panels for reasons I don't know. That site is so broken lmao.
