Chapter Text
Hari sat perched in a tree, his back resting against the thick trunk, his eyes closed as a gentle breeze swept a few loose strands of black hair across his face. He was finally home after being gone for the past five years. It was a relief. He had missed his brother during that time, and while Kakashi had visited him a few times, his sensei had been strict about it.
He’d said it was tradition for a child who develops Mana instead of Chakra to be taken away to train when they were six years old, as that was the time that it would manifest. Hari was not to be an exception just because it was already known that he would have mana. He’d been lucky that the one to teach him was someone his brother had known and not some other from Hoshigakure or Tsukigakure. Two hidden villages known for harvesting Mana users.
Yawning, Hari blinked tiredly up at the canopy of leaves. It was boring just waiting around, but he wanted to scope out his new teammates. He shifted against the tree into a more comfortable position . “I hope they aren’t disappointing.”
Stretching his arms above his head, hearing and feeling the satisfying 'pop' of his joints. Emerald eyes stared lazily at the training grounds below him. From what he’d heard, it was one that his brother was notorious for failing his potential teams in. Hari really hoped that he was not on the failing team. Now that he was back and given permission to join one, he was more than a little excited to see what kind of teacher his brother was, but if the team failed, he would have to join a different one.
The sound of footsteps drew him from his thoughts and he perked up. That must be then. His excitement grew as he mentally went through the list of Genin graduates. His brother of course had not told him who had been assigned to his team, so Hari had been left guessing.
Sitting up, he perched himself carefully on the branch as his potential teammates appeared only to deflate when he saw exactly who they were, his excitement withering away. There was no way that the three below him would work as a team.
'Uzumaki Naruto .' He thought. The blonde was known for being the bottom of his class, so much so that he couldn’t even properly form a simple clone, but recently developed a knack for the shadow clone-jutsu.
The next to enter was a girl with bubble gum pink hair who kept gazing over her shoulder a blush and Hari growned inwardly. 'Haruno Sakura.' A girly girl who cared more about her appearance and boys, specifically one boy.
'Uchiha Sasuke.' A prodigy and sole remaining member of his clan, but an absolute loner. There was no way he was a team player and Hari doubted he would be with the likes of Sakura and Naruto.
Hari blew out a puff of air from his cheeks, already mentally preparing to have to be assigned another sensei. Damn his brother for being such a hard ass when it came to his students and damn whatever algorithm that selected those three to be on the same team.
Down below him, his wouldbe teammates stared around in confusion, no doubt in search of Kakashi. Hari was sure his brother was just waiting for a moment to make a dramatic entrance.
"He's not here?" Sakura griped, a tick mark forming over her left brow and Hari scoffed. Just what was their observation skills? He could have literally killed at least two of them by now. That thought gave him a very wicked idea and slowly he slipped into the shadows.
"Why the hell did he tell us to come early if he isn't even here yet?" Sakura snapped, crossing her arm impatiently as she tapped her foot against the ground. There was a scowl on her face that looked like it could peel paint.
Hari grinned feral when her back turned to him. “ Time to play a little game.' He cackled inwardly, pulling free a kunai before silently dropping down from the branch to land behind the raging pinkett. He could slit her throat now and she would be dead before she even knew it. That was how naive she was.
Naruto, who had been facing Sakura, blanched at the site of the Kunai poised to shrink the pink haired girl, but it was too late. His slow reaction meant nothing as Hari pressed the blade to her throat, the sharp steel causing a trickle of blood to slide down her skin.
"Move and I’ll split your throat before you can think of screaming." His voice was cold, no hint of a bluff present as he flared in the direction of Sasuke who had moved into an offensive stance.
“You think you can save her before I cut open her vocal cords?” He asked mockingly and Sasuke’s jaw tightened when Sakura let out a frightened noise.
"Now, little Uchiha. How about you stay right where you are, hmm." How amusing it was to see them all at their mercy. Naruto hadn’t even made a move to help, frozen in horror at what was going on. Inexperience, but that was no surprise. Perhaps Hari was being a bit mean. They were, after all, still green with no experiences to speak of. Of course his fun wouldn't last forever.
He could sense his brother there before he heard him and he froze, caught in the act. "Hari, what are you doing?" Green eyes widened as he quickly hopped away from the terrified girl, stowing away his blade with the flick of his wrist. Turning, he grinned at his brother in genuine happiness. Kakashi was standing near a tree stump with a timer in his hand, his one visible eyebrow raised.
"Kashi-Nii!” He exclaimed, launching himself in the man's direction. “You were taking so long and I got bored.” He admitted, hugging onto his brother’s waist with a sheepish smile. He stared up at him innocently. “It was all just good fun, promise.”
"WHAT!" The twin shouts from Sakura and Naruto grated his wars and he turned to stare at them unimpressed. Even Sasuke stared at him in disbelief. Hari turned to them, an innocent smile still in place.
“Eh, you didn’t know?” He teased them. “Names’ Hatake Hari, the fourth member of team seven. I’d say it was nice to meet you but…” He grimaced at them in disappointment. “I doubt we’ll be a team for long.”
