Chapter Text

The sun beams through the window, bright yellow streaks lighting the empty, white room. It makes your eyes burn behind your eyelids and forces you out of a sweet dream. Back to reality of this shitty place.

The sight of your brand new room greets you. A blank canvas, according to your mother anyway. All of your boxes shoved in a corner waiting to be unpacked. God, you hoped this had all been some shitty dream. You’d magically wake up in your hometown and with your friends.

After your whole breakdown, your mom decided it was time to leave that small town in exchange for another…small town. Great idea!

You sit up, running a hand through your disheveled hair. Fuck, you were exhausted. A crick in your neck throbbed, probably from sleeping in the car yesterday. A small buzz broke you out of your thoughts, bringing your attention to your phone.

A text from your best friend back home, about how they miss you so much and blah blah blah. Honestly you couldnt be bothered, thinking about that would ruin your mood more than it already was. You wished you had your computer to check your A.O.L or myspace… or just browse forums. But instead, you swing your legs off the bed and stand.

It’s the weekend, why not explore?

Or so your dad said before practically shoving you out the door into the sticky, hot outdoors. This was worse than the heat back home jesus! Humidity was thick in the air that made everything feel cramped despite being outdoors.

Your sneakers hit the pavement as you mindlessly walked down the sidewalk of the suburb you now called “home”. Without your computer, you couldnt look up what this town even had and you barely paid attention when you drove through yesterday. Sweat dripped from your head and formed on your chest while you searched for somewhere, anywhere to reside away from the sun.

After about 10 minutes of this suffering, you finally stumble upon a comic shop. You had no idea how you ended up here, but thank god you did. AC hopefully awaited you inside…

The bell dinged above you and the smell of bo was the first thing that greeted your senses. A small fan hummed by the cashier and that seemed to be the only way to cool down this shop. A few of the people in there glanced at you or stared, but you couldn’t be bothered to react. Just kept walking and slipping in between shelves. The annoyance at the heat overwhelmed your usual need to start conflict.

As you browsed, a beautiful issue of spider-man caught your eye, oh my god. The cover art was amazing! You carefully examined it, admiring the line art and such. You should redraw this later…it was so intricate. Your eyes hung on every detail.

A loud groan takes your attention away from it, turning to look at a boy further down the shelf. Auburn greasy hair that clung to his skin, thick square glasses, orange plaid, and a flash t shirt underneath. How the hell was he wearing that in this weather?

“fuck me! He doesn’t have it…” He whined, tugging his hair as he ran his hand through it. Huh, you wondered what he was looking for.

You wouldnt have to wonder for long as his gaze shifts to you and looks at the comic in your hand. And based on the look of shock in his face, it was the one he wanted.

“you! you… thats mine!” The guys voice cracked as he stepped forward, slamming his foot down and furrowing his eyebrows. You cringe and step backwards to mirror his action, although you cant help but think he kinda looks like a pissed off rabbit.

“is it on hold or something?” You tilt your head and meet his eyes, rage burning behind them. “of course not, but i’ve been waiting for it for weeks!” He spat with so much venom, you’d think you stole his wallet.

“I mean..finders keepers.” You really had no intention of buying this but…now that this guy wanted it? Maybe you could scrape up enough for however much it costs. Just to fuck with him.

“I-you!” He grunts in frustration, glasses slipping down his nose. “fuck you! I bet you’re poser, you don’t even like spider-man! You probably only know it because of the movie huh?” He points at you.

Oh he was yelling now. This really peeved him huh? And honestly? It wasn’t worth arguing over, especially after looking at the steep price of $30 bucks. That was a week’s worth of cash from chores!

“Whatever man, take the comic” He practically snatches it out of your hands while beaming proudly. “I win! I knew you were some weird wannabe geek!”

Suddenly you regret your small kindness but couldn’t take it back now as he almost skips to the counter. What an asshole.

Your phone dings with a text of your mom telling you to come home so, with one last look at that weird little geek, you leave the store. Thoughts of him plague your walk home but you’d hope it was a one time interaction.

But, as it alway, you were wrong.
