Work Text:
The sun had already set outside of Flower Castle. The warm glow of its light had long faded, allowing night to settle in its place.
The evening always left Yellow tired. Sure, he would occasionally take evening rounds to look for criminals or stay up if his mind wouldn’t let him rest, but most of the time, with the setting sun came a chance for him to relax after a long day. Tonight was one of those very nights.
Yellow had already changed into something comfortable before he had heard the knock at his door. He wore a baggy pair of mustard-brown pants and a soft cream-colored button-up sleep shirt. He lacked his typical hat and belt, trading those for a fuzzy pair of corn-colored socks and house shoes.
Upon the brisk knock, Yellow rushed his way to crack open the door. To his surprise, Blue was on the other side, posture set as he patiently waited.
“Yellow, dear? Are you busy?” His voice was soft as ever, gentle and delicate like the flap of a butterfly’s wings. Just hearing it made Yellow weak. And seeing Blue, standing there, before him, in his fancy lace shoes and a lovely light blue sundress. The flowing skirt and the puffed sleeves? The little bow that held his hair back, and the light amount of makeup on his already flawless skin? Yellow could have swooned! Knees weak in the best sort of way. How could he ever deserve someone so beautiful?
And then Yellow looked down at himself: his informal evening-wear. It was downright criminal of him to look that way in front of Blue! It was so embarrassing to be caught this way in the presence of someone so perfect. It made Yellow wish the ground could open up and swallow him whole, or maybe lightning would strike just perfectly and relieve him from the misery. The feeling soon subsided, though, as Blue stepped inside the room. The other flower always had this way about pulling Yellow’s mind away from darker thoughts.
There was this kind smile etched across Blue’s face. A single one of his hands came up to push the hair away from Yellow’s eyes. It then patted several times atop his head, eliciting a smile on Yellow’s face. It was only then that Blue spoke again.
“I heard that there is going to be a celebration tonight; a small, wonderful affair to mark Asgore’s time with us? I wanted to see if you would attend with me.”
There was this small sparkle in Blue’s eyes, filled with hopefulness and some deeper insight that he always seemed to carry and that Yellow never seemed to pick up. It was upon Yellow’s hesitation, though, that he spoke again.
“I am not trying to pressure you, my dear. We can also spend the time alone, just you and me. You look quite weary, dreadfully so, and I wish not to put more strain on you.” Blue’s hands reached forward, taking Yellow’s into his own. A small nod was produced by the latter, who finally looked up to meet Blue’s eyes. The second he met them, Yellow couldn’t help but blush. He always seemed to do that. It came really easily, especially when he was around his Blue.
“I think I’d like that.” Yellow slowly responded, trying to hide how flustered he really felt. It didn’t seem to work, though. No, his emotions were overflowing: pouring out like water.
Blue beamed from the response Yellow had given him, raising higher onto the tips of his ballet shoes. His posture went somehow straighter, smile wide as his grip on Yellow’s hands tightened.
“Just splendid! I have a spot prepared for us in the gardens, right under that beautiful cherry tree you love so dearly! I sat out one of those quilts earlier, just for the two of us!” A giggle accompanied Blue’s words, making Yellow’s heart nearly burst from his chest. He wouldn’t mind if he died from the sound of it. What a lovely way to die, there in Blue’s arms. But that, he remembered, would only make his partner sad, which is definitely a crime! So he couldn’t ever do that!
Blue gave the slightest of a half-spin, dress swaying gently as he turned. His hand gripped Yellow’s tightly, ready to lead them forward. It was when Yellow pulled away that a frown finally muddled his features, dampening his mood near-instantly.
There was a moment of silent nothing before he noticed Yellow looking around. Blue could see the frantic edge to the other’s searching, so he slowly spoke again in that gentle manner he always had with Yellow.
“Dear? What exactly is it that you are looking for?” He tiptoed his way over, beside the other, leaning slightly as he looked at what Yellow was so focused on. The latter had scooped up a bolo-tie, fiddling with it between his fingers.
“Well, you’re dressed so purty that I thought I’d go ahead an’ dress myself up for you, too.” Yellow insisted, turning the tie in his hands a few times as he tried to get it loose.
The smile returned to Blue’s face when he heard this. He tenderly took the object away from Yellow’s hands, interlocking their fingers once again after it was returned to the desk.
“There is no need to fuss with that, dearest. You look absolutely breathtaking as you are!”
Yellow gave a gasp, eyes widening as he processed the words.
“Yer sayin’ I’m theavin’ yer breath?!” Alarm rang out in his voice, his hands gripping back desperately onto Blue’s. “I didn’t mean ta steal it! How’da’I give it back?!”
Another chuckle escaped Blue’s lips, the light expression spreading across the entirety of his features.
“Yellow, darling. It is just an expression! You haven’t taken a thing from me, dear.” He reassured, squeezing the other’s hands to comfort him. “Now, let us please go and enjoy ourselves.”
And with that, there weren't any other complaints the whole walk there. It was comfortable, with small words shared between them: the silent nothings and pretty little compliments given out of love. The air outside was slightly cool, but not enough to carry a chill. It made the stroll comfortable and gave Blue an excuse to cuddle up next to Yellow as they walked.
The scene: once they had arrived, it was more beautiful than Yellow could have ever imagined it. The cherry tree was blooming, full of fluffy bunches of pink blossoms. The quilt was interwoven with many different colors, crafted from intricate scraps of silks and softer fabrics. Around the spot were flower petals matching the color of both of their blooms. Soft light was cast from candle-lit lamps, the rest supplied from a wonderful expanse of twinkling stars.
Seeing all of this was enough to bring tears to Yellow’s eyes. Words escaped him the moment he tried to speak, sounds coming out, instead, as a garbled little whimper of nonsensical noise. Despite this, it was clear that Blue understood, as a soft kiss was placed onto Yellow’s cheek.
After the initial shock had worn off, Blue helped to guide Yellow down to the quilt. They both settled on either side, close enough for their arms to brush as they breathed.
“I — I can’t believe ya did all’a this.” Yellow slowly expressed, his accent coming out thicker due to his flustered state. “All’a this is’so wonderful! An’ you’re jus’ so beauytiful! An’ I — I jus’ —“ He stampeded a moment before Blue cut in.
“We haven’t even gotten to the best part, darling!” He took up one of Yellow’s hands, rubbing the back of it with his thumb in a comforting motion.
It was just as Blue spoke the words that the first loud boom was heard from the sky. Yellow nearly jumped out of his skin, spinning quickly in nearly all directions to see where it had come from. Blue moved a gentle finger under Yellow’s chin, guiding him to look up at the sky. Another loud ‘Bang!’ echoed as the night exploded with dashes of bright colors. Fireworks painted the night sky, casting a warm glow onto the happy couple.
Blue watched as the sight finally registered with his partner, gaze focused on the shiny reflection of light caught in Yellow’s eyes.
Yellow was transfixed, his eyes unblinking as the show began. This air of wonder hung around him, tainting the air with an innocent sweetness. It brought a softness to Blue’s gaze and a tender form of adoration to his heart.
The sky flashed with a great many colors, exploding with flashes of brightness. It was like the stars were speaking to Yellow, the universe revealing secrets it had never dared to whisper before. Purple, then green, then orange, then gold. A chill ran down Yellow’s spine the second that blue and yellow flashed in the sky together. His hand shot out to point at it, a shrill little yelp escaping his lips in a show of pure, unadulterated excitement.
“It’s us! It’s us, Blue! Look, look!” He pointed more insistently, body buzzing from excitement. “It’s us!”
By this point, Blue’s cheeks hurt from how wide his smile had spread; it warmed his heart to see his beautiful Yellow so happy.
“I do see that. I am sure Flowery added them just for us.”
There was a quick nod from Yellow, who squeaked again when their colors arose a second time. Now, the lights took shape: one like a butterfly, circling a cowboy hat before landing, the next a yellow revolver shooting out a bouquet of vibrant blue flowers. Each display was greater than the last, each representing the flowers in beautiful light.
The fireworks continued to blast long into the night, illuminating the sky with a vibrant display of many colors. Blue and Yellow continued to sit together, hand in hand, sides pressed close, as the display slowly dwindled.
It was upon those last fleeting sparks that Blue realized Yellow was no longer watching them. With a fleeting glance, he had realized the other’s eyes were fixed on him. The way Yellow’s eyes fluttered, more than a hint of flush to his face…
“Is something wrong, darling?” Blue quietly voiced, shifting to face his dearest partner. “Have you not enjoyed the fireworks?”
“Nah, I liked ‘em plen’y,” Yellow responded, his focus never wavering from Blue. “But, ya’know, I think I’d rather jus’ lay here and stare at you.” He continued, dimples present as he grinned. “You’re a lot more purty then them.”
Blue knew it was only partially intentional, but oh, how that comment made him swoon: heart burst aflame. Blue’s mind was no longer focused on the fireworks; he had better things, now, to distract him.
Blue leaned in, sliding his lips against Yellow’s. Their bodies fit like puzzle pieces: not a gap between them as the kiss lingered on. They remained like this, kissing in waves, close and together, while the light of the fireworks drowned their bodies in perfect bliss.
