The Lost Child

Summary:

Coco and Agott are traveling north together, while Coco mourns the child she once has been.

Notes:

July Break Bingo | Prompt: Location: Carriage

This is a fairly short ficlet. The prompt with the carriage did remind me of WHA instantly, so I thought of a really tiny little thing about a possible adult Coco.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Coco realized that she must have dozed off. It was surprisingly easy to sleep in a flying carriage.

Looking out of the window she saw the landscape underneath looking alien in the silvery moonlight.

“Sleepyhead,” Agott said softly.

Coco had not even realized she was awake. But the other young woman had been leaning against the window on the other side. She was holding her head up on her hand, her eyes seeming like they were shining with a light all of their own.

“How long till we are there?” Coco asked.

“I think three more hours.”

Coco sighed. She looked out of the window once again, seeing a village drift by, most of the windows being dark as their inhabitants were sleeping. Only three houses had the orange light of fires shine into the cobbled street outside.

The carriage flew over it silently.

It was strange at times for Coco to realize how used she had become to many of those daily magics. Once upon a time she would have given anything to fly in one of those carriages, and now it was just a normal part of life.

At times she missed that girl she had once been. That innocent girl, who would watch magic happen and feel her heart flutter. That little girl, who had thought magic could solve any problem and bring happiness to everyone.

Agott put her hand over Coco’s, pressing it, clearly at least guessing what Coco was thinking.

This at least made a flush of warmth pulse through Coco’s body. She smiled at the other woman, leaning against her shoulder.

While the view out of the window was beautiful, it was not what she needed right now. What she needed was someone to hold her, to be there for her. She needed to know that she was loved.

Agott did not say anything. It was probably for the better. She had that habit where her words were just a bit more mean than she intended them to be, and then the two of them would argue for nothing.

So silence was nice.

Agott put an arm over Coco’s shoulders, holding her close.

Despite it all, Agott was warm, and smelled nice. She smelled of lavender and briar roses.

Coco closed her eyes again. The carriage was swooning up and down in its flight, almost like a crib being rocked back and forth to soothe a child back to sleep.

Coco was not a child anymore. Not really. But at times she really did miss it. The innocence she had once possessed. The way simple things would seem so grand and amazing.

The world was not all bad. People cared. And people loved. She loved, and she was loved. It was just that it had turned out things were often more complicated than they seemed to the eyes of a twelve-year-old child.

And yet. She was here. Not alone. She had someone to hold her close as the carriage was flying further up north.
