Summary
"...It's tormented me. But why taint your calling card? Why change the rules? I remember, I asked your opinion at the time over brandies at the Reform Club and you said, 'Perhaps the old boy's losing his taste for the sport.' But were you?"
"My actions were not of my own; but thrust upon me... by an irresistible force. Oh, it must've been quite the blow to your ego when you finally learnt the truth..."
"Just that I that I failed to see the clues laid out before me. It was that it was you, John. For God's sake; it was you!"

Summary
Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren had destroyed Harold Parker’s life.
It hadn’t been malicious, and it hadn’t been intentional, he was certain, but it had happened. It had happened, though, and it was cruel. He felt that sticky, nervous feeling in the pit of his stomach – stage fright, his mother had always called it - Just a few, tiny, little butterflies to make sure you’re excited. Excited was not the word he would use to describe this.
All eyes were trained on him, and he heard a sharp intake of breath. His face was red, he knew. He hoped they couldn’t see where his sweat was dampening the armpits of his button-up shirt. He wondered where his life had gone so very wrong. The audience was staring at him in shock and disapproval. Harold put his head in his hands, red still on his face, and moaned.

Summary
It is very easy to be Maggie, and that is why it is much harder to be Ruth.
The cookie dough in the bowl is too granular, Ruth realizes, and she wipes one wrist across her forehead. Thin brown hair is smeared with flour as she regroups before attacking the bowl again. Across the table, Maggie is watching her, with her chin in her hands. Ruth cannot see her legs through the counter and the blue silk skirt, but she knows her sister is kicking her feet like a child.
“You stir counterclockwise.” Maggie says.
Ruth looks at her, but says nothing.
“Momma used to do it the other way.”
She wonders who her sister is thinking of, some lady from church, a mother of a friend… Or maybe she has made it up, as she sometimes does, and invented quiet Sunday afternoons with cookies and smiles and liquid sunlight staining the setting yellow, sepia and blonde, like the hair that only the youngest daughter inherited.Series

Summary
"Me and Henry spent most of our twenties working rigs up in Prudhoe Bay. All those years, I never saw anybody get made up from roughneck to AD without being derrickman for at least a couple of years."
The one upside—*one* upside—of winter in Prudhoe Bay was that the mosquitoes finally died.

Summary
"Guys?" Eli's high and panicky voice interrupted them. "Do you always have to fight?”
“Eli!” Young said warningly, at the same moment that Rush said “Yes.”, which he accentuated with a firm push at Young’s chest.
“I mean,” The boy continued in a slightly wavering voice. “Can't you just hug it out for a change?"
