Chapter Text
It’s Evie's first day at Beacon Hills High, and as she gets her schedule from the counselor, a loud voice calls behind her.
“Can I get a tardy pass miss—“ A boy with dark, shaggy hair yells as he nearly tumbles into you.
"Be careful, Stilinski!" The counselor says, as she quickly writes him a note. "This can't be a habit this year."
"It won't! I promise!"
"Will you walk Miss Sinclair to her first class, please?" She's unamused. You're just shocked he didn't completely knock you over. He agrees with a nod, and takes the schedule from her.
He looks excited. "English with me. Sweet!" He gives the schedule back, and starts to race to the classroom. "I'm Stiles, by the way."
"I'm Evie." She's not too sure what to say to this very awkward looking boy. He's lanky and unathletic looking. He's dressed in a flannel, over a graphic t-shirt, and some ill fitting jeans. The two of them make their way down the hall, ending at an unassuming English classroom.
"This is our stop!" He makes his way to his desk, right behind another teenage boy with similarly messy hair, but a more put together outfit. In front of him is a girl, with long brown hair and a notebook open and ready for the day. Evie puts her things down next to the boy in the middle, and gets out her notebook too. The class today is over The Great Gatsby, but the teacher spares you from any difficult questions, since it is your first day. The bell rings, and she sighs with relief. She starts to pack her things up, when she looks up and the girl from before is standing at her desk.
The girl looks down, and asks "Is it your first day? I don't think I've seen you around."
"Yeah. Is it that obvious?"
The girl giggles. "I'm Allison. I just moved here a year ago, so trust me, I get the feeling." She smiles so sincerely. "This is Scott," She points to the boy directly next to you, "and I have no doubt you've met Stiles already."
"The man, the myth, the legend!" He boasts about himself.
"My name is Evie." She says, packing her things up. "It's nice to meet all of you."
"Where are you off to?" Allison asks, "One of us can walk you."
Evie pulls out her folded up schedule, and finds her next class. "Chemistry in... room 214."
"Perfect!" Scott says, "My next class is in 215. I'll guide you."
"Thanks." She follows the boy through the crowded hallway, her ears pierced with shrill laughing. They make it to the room, and she's on her own.
"Catch you later, new girl!" He teases, and walks into his class. She takes a breath, and enters hers. The smell of chemicals is stronger than it probably should be. She finds an empty seat by a window, and settles in. The rest of the students trickle in before the final bell rings, and class starts. A boy with dirty blonde curly hair sits next to her, a similar build to Scott. He's taller and has longer limbs, but she assumes they must do the same sport. The teacher launches into a lecture, discussing DNA extraction. The boy slides a note over to her.
"New here?" It reads, "I'm Isaac. I'd say this out loud but the teacher would have me hung if I uttered a non-scientific word here." It makes her giggle.
She scribbles back, "I'm Evie. Very new. I just moved in on Saturday."
He starts to write back, but the teacher interrupts. "I'm sorry, Mr. Lahey. Is there something more important than learning about DNA and RNA in here?"
"No sir. Not at all." He looks calm. He slides the note back over with his phone number written on it. "Just in case" is written underneath.
The rest of the class passes by in a scientific blur. She has study hall next, and with no one to guide her, she makes it to the library with all of five seconds to spare. She gets her laptop out and starts trying to find where the online English homework her teacher mentioned is, but she quickly gives up. She pulls out her phone to quickly text her mom "I'm surviving. So far. Miss you." and puts it away. The period moves quicker than she realizes, and by the time the bell rings, she's just barely found her school email. She heads to her next class, History, and is surprised to find the two boys she met earlier sat towards the back of the class.
"Evie!" Stiles calls out. "We saved you a seat!" He pats the chair next to him, and continues his enthusiastic conversation with Scott about their upcoming lacrosse game.
"Do you both play?" Evie pipes up.
They look at each other. "I mean, I do." Scott confidently states, "I'm the team captain. Stiles though..." He looks over at his friend, "He's a professional benchwarmer."
"Hey! Someone's got to cheer you on!" As Stiles defends himself, the starting bell rings and the teacher launches into a lesson about ancient Greek battle strategy. Riveting. Like the other classes of the day, this one flies by. It's now the best part of the day: lunch.
"Evie, sit with us at lunch." Scott's packing up his stuff, "Unless you have other friends to sit with already?"
"Thanks," Evie grabs her bag, "No other options yet. Eating in the bathroom is too sad for the first day." That elicits a laugh out of Stiles and a smile out of Scott. She falls in step behind the boys, quietly observing their obviously deep friendship. They make it to the cafeteria, and Evie pulls a small sack lunch out of her bag. Just a small sandwich today, her nerves always get the best of her and destroy her appetite anyways. The boys run off to grab food from the line, when Allison sits down across from her.
"Where did you say you're from again?" Allison also has a packed lunch in front of her, a hearty chicken ceaser salad.
"Washington state." Evie says, very matter-of-factly. "It's nice to be where the sun finally shines."
Allison giggles, "Why did you move down? Aside from the obvious sunshine."
Evie's face grows sadder, "Um... my dad passed away. His dying wish was for us to move down here. Something about it being safer for us... whatever that means."
Allison's face lights up with a million questions, but before she can ask any, the boys come back in a roaring stampede of pizza and laughter. "So, guys," Stiles says through bites, "Homecomings in two weeks. Any plans?"
Shit. Evie already feels out of place here, and a school dance soon? Not a lot of time to make friends. "I don't know," Allison says, "Lydia and I are going shopping on Saturday. Oh! Evie! You should join us!"
Evie smiles at the invitation. "Sure! I don't have a car though, could I bother you for a ride?" Allison agrees, and puts her phone number in Evie's phone to further coordinate later. The cafeteria bustles with conversation, and not long after the bells ring once more. The rest of the day goes by, trying to not outrun everyone in P.E. and realizing what a mistake it was to sign up for choir. As the final bell rings, Evie starts to leave the building to walk home. Alerted by a loud honk, she turns around to see Stiles in a dusty old blue Jeep.
"Need a ride?" Hesitantly, she agrees. He drives her home, making light conversation and offering his "services" whenever she needs. "Seriously! Allison can send you my number. You're only 2 houses down from me anyways."
As Evie exits the Jeep, a smile creeps on her face. Her first day, and already a few friends made and plans set for the weekend. She heads inside, suddenly aware of how alone she now is. The house echoes with every step. The movers just arrived today, so boxes litter every room. She heads upstairs to her own, where the only piece of furniture is her bed frame and a bare bed. She sets her bag down, and starts to unpack. First her bedding, then clothes, and before she knows it, her mom is home from work. Evie heads downstairs to tell her mom about her great day over the Chinese takeout her mom picked up.
Before bed, she reaches into her bag and types the number she was given in class into her phone. "Hey Isaac," her text reads "It's Evie. From chem. Just thought I'd text so it doesn't look like I'm a total douche."
He reads it almost immediately, and the typing bubbles pop up shortly after. "Hey Evie. Glad you texted. How was the rest of your day?"
"It was good! I made friends!"
"Ooh, who? I may know them."
"Scott, Stiles and Allison. I didn't catch their last names."
"I know them! They're great." The typing bubbles appear, and disappear, and go on in that pattern for a few minutes. "Be careful though."
Confusion covers Evie's face. "Huh? Of what?"
"You don't want to know."
Those words linger on her screen. The only thought crossing her mind is "Do I wanna know?" She decides to just leave it for the night. She's had enough excitement for one day.
