He attempts to sound calm. “Is that your phone?”
“Yeah. I better check.” Hollander is frowning and already pulling away. He sounds distracted. Ilya feels a sense of foreboding. “I don’t usually get messages at this hour so it might be an emergency.”
Ilya does not know if it is an emergency or not. The immediate squeezing sensation in his chest at the screen saying there is one new message from Sébastien certainly feels like a cardiac event. The notification would be easy enough to brush off, but the way Hollander has gone stock-still under his hands sends a creeping cold up his spine that crystallizes into a vision of the blank spaces in Hollander’s night before now. Maybe many other nights before now.
There is a dull throb behind his eyes. “Do you need to answer that?”
