Sometimes, if he was really lucky or just persistent enough with asking, Barry would regale him with tales of these adventures. They always left Chris a little scared, but that was okay - eventually he would be a knight, and he would be able to fight all the things that scared him in Barry’s stories.
The beasts of the Vast North frightened him most of all.
“They’re abominations that live in the cold, cursed lands of the North,” Barry would say. “Amalgamations of flesh and bone, beastly creatures sent to feast on little boys’ bones. But you don’t have to worry. They’re always fought back into the shadows, so they’ll never get close enough to eat you.”
“How come they eat little boys?” he asked, his brow furrowed in worry.
“Because that’s what monsters do,” said Barry.
Little Chris wants to grow up and become a knight to fight the beasts of the North, but what he finds there will be far be far beyond anything he expected.
