Work Text:
The door slammed shut, echoing throughout the bunker and telling Sam someone was back. Dean had made him stay back home due to his massive headaches, which sometimes had made it hard for him to see.
The hunter didn’t look up from his book until the new arrival made his way into the bunker library. Sam could tell it was Gabriel. Over all the time they had been boyfriends, of course they could recognise each other’s footsteps.
Usually, when entering a room with Sam- usually the library - he would cuddle up right next to him and pretend to read whatever the human was reading, but not today. Instead, today, Gabriel sat down in an armchair further away and curled up into a ball.
Sam noticed this instantly, and put his book down before slowly going over to the ex-archangel. There was clearly something wrong with him, and Sam was determined to find out what.
“Hey, Gabe. Are you okay?” Sam asked. Despite how broken the ex-archangel looked, he nodded. The hunter looked at him sympathetically. “I don’t know why I asked that. You clearly don’t. Do you wanna talk to me about it?”
Gabriel shook his head vigorously, indicating that he did not want to.
Then, Sam noticed the large cut on his left arm. He had lost a lot of blood. “Shit, Gabe. How did you get this?” Gabriel flinched as Sam pointed to it. “Shush, I’m not going to touch it. But you have your grace, don’t you? Why didn’t you heal it?”
“I can’t.” Gabriel whispered, his voice broken up.
“You- did you lose your grace?” Sam asked, worried about his angel.
Gabriel tried to say something, but he couldn’t get the word out, so he nodded.
“Oh. Gabe. C’mon, let’s get you to the infirmary.”
It was a struggle to get Gabriel to stand up so they could go to the infirmary. The ex-archangel didn’t want to move for some reason. That was when Sam noticed how bad Gabriel actually was.
“Gabriel, there’s blood everywhere. Your leg is covered in it. Tell me, have you been hurt anywhere else?”
“My- my chest.” Sam practically threw of Gabriel’s t-shirt to see how bad the cut was. “Damn, Samsquatch. You seem really eager to get me undressed.” He flirted.
“Gabe, you’re bleeding. Is now really the time for flirting?” Sam had decided the best way to carry Gabriel was bridal style. He winced slightly, and while Sam felt guilty he was putting his angel in pain, there wasn’t any other way to carry him.
“There’s always time for flirting, Sammich. Especially when it’s flirting with you.”
Sam smiled tightly and proceeded to carry him to the infirmary. It was a long way when carrying the ex-archangel, but he didn’t stop once. When they arrived, Gabriel got lowered onto one of the beds, and sat up weakly.
The hunter got the stuff he needed to fix Gabriel’s wounds, and started on the one on his leg. Instead of taking off Gabe’s trousers to get to the large wound, Sam decided it would just be easier to cut them off with scissors.
“Hey, I liked these pants.” Gabriel complained.
“But do you like your leg more?” Sam countered. That shut Gabriel up. He wiped the excessive amounts of blood away, and got the needle and thread to sew it up.
“What’s that for?” Gabriel asked in fear.
“Gabe, there’s no other way for me to fix you. I’m human, remember? And as of now, so are you. This is how humans fix each other when they’re injured. Now come on, it needs to be done.” Sam began to stitch up Gabriel’s wound, tears forming in his eyes and threatening to fall the longer he was doing so. Gabriel kept whimpering in pain, but it was obvious he was also trying to conceal it. “It’ll get better, Gabe.” Sam kept whispering, as if that would do something. It didn’t.
Once Sam was done with the long cut on Gabriel’s leg that went from the top of his thigh all the way to his knee, he moved onto the one on his arm, which was also leaking a lot of blood. He was moving fast so that Gabriel wouldn’t have to suffer through this for as long, but Sam still noticed how laboured the ex-archangel’s breathing was.
“Just one more thing to do, dear.” Sam said once he’d finished. “How are you holding up?”
“What do you think, moose? Everything hurts. I wish I had my grace.”
“We’ll get it back, I promise.” Sam promised. “When Cas gets back we can make him heal you, but until then, I don’t want you bleeding out, so this has to be done.”
Gabriel groaned. “Just get it over with, Samantha.”
“You’re lucky you’re dying, Gabe. ‘Cause if you weren’t....”
“Am I lucky? I don’t feel it.”
“Gabe, I didn’t mean that. I promise.” Sam tenderly kissed Gabriel’s forehead before getting back to the task at hand. This one was a little different for Sam to do since he was more practiced at stitching up arms or sometimes the stomach, not right in the middle of his chest, but it was still done well. “You’re all done, Gabe.” He said gently, caressing Gabriel’s cheek.
“Thanks, Sam.”
“Why don’t we get you cleaned up? D’you want a bath?”
Gabriel saw his chance to either flirt or make a dirty joke, or both, but refrained from doing so, which surprised Sam. Instead, he just said, “Sure.”
“Can you walk?”
“I think you should just carry me, Samsquatch. Please.” Gabriel said the last word in a whisper so that Sam would say yes. As if he wasn’t already going to do that. Sam lifted Gabriel up with ease and took him to the nearest bathroom.
“Mm, finally undressing me, huh?” Gabriel flirted weakly as Sam took his bloodied trousers off. Sam stopped for a second to glare at him, although there was fondness in his look. The angel smiled at him. “I love you too.” He whispered.
“I love you so much.” Sam kissed Gabriel’s forehead again, before finishing taking his clothes off and placed him in the hot bath.
“Ah.” He groaned at the feeling of the heat.
“I’m sorry. It might be too hot.”
“No, it’s alright.” Gabriel reached out of the bathtub and grasped Sam’s hand. “Also, thank you. You know how much I love bubble baths.”
“Of course, dear.” Sam stood up for a second, but stopped when Gabriel protested.
“No. Please. Stay with me.”
“I am, dear. I promise. Just stretching my legs. They were getting sore.”
“Yes, we know you have long legs, Samsquatch.” Gabriel said sarcastically. “Can you sit down again? Please?”
Sam obediently did as was asked of him, and despite the side of the bathtub in between them, Gabe tried to snuggle up against him.
“Hey, Gabe? If you’d like we can do that later, but right now let’s focus on getting you clean.” Sam said. He got a sponge from seemingly nowhere and began to softly clean the dried blood from his ex-archangelic boyfriend.
It took ten minutes since he really didn’t want to accidentally hurt Gabriel, but eventually all the blood was gone. “D’you want to get out now?”
Gabriel nodded.
“I’ll get you a towel. You can get out of the bath while you wait.” Sam went to find a towel and Gabriel tenderly got out of the large bathtub.
Gabriel was too sore to dry himself properly, so Sam did it for him.
“Like what you see, huh?” Gabriel asked with a smirk as Sam was making his way down to his legs, drying them.
Sam huffed a short laugh. “Gabe, you know I’m asexual, right?”
“I know. Sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable.”
“You’re not. Not really. Just reminding you that I’m not interested in that–”
“Yeah. Of course. I just joke around, but to be honest, neither am I, really.”
“Okay.” Sam handed Gabriel a bundle of clothing. “Now, here’s your clothes, can you get dressed by yourself?”
“Um, yeah. I think I can.” It was a slow process, but Gabriel did get dressed by himself. Well, until it came to putting on his t-shirt. Due to the large cut on his arm and the one on his chest, Gabriel couldn’t lift his arms that much to put it on. “I can’t do this, Sam.” He said quietly. As if, for some reason, Sam would be disappointed in him. Which, of course, he was not.
“It’s alright, Gabe. How about a shirt? I’ve got lots of those. It’ll be easier ‘cause they’ve got buttons.”
“You want me to wear your precious flannel?” Gabriel asked, smiling cheekily at him.
“Yes, I do. Now c’mon.” Sam led the ex-archangel to his bedroom, and looked through his wardrobe while Gabriel sat on the edge of the bed.
“You gonna give me your least favourite one?” Gabriel asked, making Sam look around at him in confusement.
“What are you talking about?” Sam asked. “Why would I do that? I’m looking for my favourite one. One that would feel nice against your injuries. Why do you ask?”
“Dunno. Something just made me ask that.”
“Oh.”
“Hey, Sam?”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks. For everything. Looking after me most of all. And caring about me.”
“Of course. I love you, Gabe. I’d never do anything to hurt you, I hope you know that.” Sam came over with his favourite flannel for Gabriel to wear, and gently put it on him. Gabriel snuggled up to him, and Sam wrapped his arm around him.
They sat like that until Sam noticed Gabriel’s soft snoring. Sam lifted him up and moved him so he could be under the blankets. He curled up next to the ex-archangel, and tenderly kissed his forehead for one last time before falling asleep.
