Work Text:
Sebek had beaten Silver in their race to the school's main building, and he was quite smug as they both panted for breath.
"Heh, another weakness of yours exposed," Sebek huffed, hands on his hips.
"Hm," huffed Silver, breathing in and out deeply. "You've won this time, Sebek. But it won't happen again."
Silver's hat was askew, dust had landed on his clothes, and rivulets of sweat ran from his forehead, to his soft cheeks, down to his round jaw. Sebek's hands twitched with the desire to papf off the mess Silver made of himself.
"Hmph! I will best you—again, and again! I will never take a challenge lying down, Silver!"
"Good," said Silver, and he smiled at Sebek, straightening up his posture. "What would I be without you, Sebek?"
Sebek blew up his cheeks, and looked away. Really, what unnecessary words.
"Don't joke around. You would be drowning in unrealized potential. Without an equal fae rival, you would never become a proper retainer for our Liege."
Sebek did not see, but he heard Silver's shoes crunch down on the gravel, and he sensed a faint magic tingle through the air. When he turned back, Silver had cleaned most of himself up with a spell. But Silver's tie was still looser than was proper—Sebek reached out and fixed it, so Silver would look presentable.
Silver's ridiculous expression was still on his face.
"I'm glad, then." He said. Silver's hand touched his own, as Sebek finished adjusting Silver's tie, but it just as quickly lowered. Sebek did not know what to make of it.
Silver looked focused, flicked a hand, and magicked off the dust from Sebek's own clothes.
"Hmph," was what he gave in response. "I could have taken care of that." Then, "do well in your interview, later, Silver. Always consider our Liege's reputation."
"When have I not?" Said Silver, then he clapped a hand on Sebek's back, "Don't underestimate me."
"As if!"
They waved goodbye, and headed their separate directions.
—
Malleus' overblot… it was an unthinkable event. Sebek never expected to delve so deeply into the dreams of their teacher; to see Silver at the lowest point in his life; to witness the raw pain and heartbreak of their Liege. Such things did not need to be seen by a lowly vassal's eyes.
And yet he and Silver experience all that and more. They watched Lilia fight in the fae and human war, save the Royal Egg, then subsequently thrown out of the castle. They saw the Royal Egg struggle to hatch, until Lilia himself sacrificed his magic to bring Malleus into their world. Then Lord Malleus grew up without a mother and father, all because of those wretched humans!
Of course, Sebek knew such a war happened… His grandfather had regaled to him of hundreds of stories of Wartime Baur, but it was so much worse than Sebek could have imagined. Growing up, Sebek often wondered, could humans and fae really live in harmony? After the way those humans conducted themselves, stealing from the land, and refusing the diplomatic approach? And seeing it play out… It had weighed on Sebek's heart. His resolve grew weak, and he almost succumbed to the darkness.
He wanted to stay sleeping in Malleus' eternal dream.
Had he done that, it would be giving up on their Liege's real future.
Silver had shaken him out of that foolish reverie.
And then there is the case of Silver's birth father… Sebek meant what he said. Silver wasn't that man. It was the Dawn Knight who killed Princess Meleanor. It was Henrick Istvan who commanded the human army to pillage Briarland. It was the Silver Owls who mined out the land's mystium and magestone, ruining the nocturnal fae land and fae villages.
Silver had torn himself apart thinking his existence antithetical to that of their Liege's happiness—but Silver himself was a mere babe. And even with his struggles… did their Liege not enjoy his time visiting Master Lilia and his human son?
It was strange reflecting on it.
—
Sebek had known Silver for most of his life.
When his parents would take care of young Silver, Sebek would often peek at the strange human child. Sebek saw humans, of course. His father was one… And their home was more on the outskirts of a human settled village, rather than a fae one. Sebek was not able to play with fae children, and he couldn't muster up an interest to play with human children. He spent time with his siblings, but they were much older and had better things to do than mind a small Sebek.
The young half fae never really knew what to make of Silver, and for the most part, avoided the human boy. He would see Silver ask Sebeks mother and father things, and go run around outside playing with animals. Sebek thought, he's not even fae… why was he here? He wished for Silver to just go away so Sebek could walk around freely in his home. His favorite days, other than his grandfather visiting, were when the human boy was picked up once more by the young looking fae with red streaks of hair. Silver was simply a strange occurrence in Sebek's home
That was until his grandfather decided to further his training, and dropped Sebek off at Master Lilia's home.
From then on, Silver became a de facto part of Sebek's life.
Sebek always compared himself to Silver, and became highly jealous whenever Silver was praised by their teacher. What did that human have that he did not? Not a drop of fae blood in him, and yet Silver could quickly pick up Master Lilia's training. Silver was resourceful, and clever—he understood the woods he lived in deeply, and had learned how to navigate its terrain like he was born for it. Sebek sometimes felt like he had to work twice as hard just to have the same results as his rival. It was not fair!
For a long time it felt that he could only catch up to Silver, until one day Sebek was able to beat him in a race. Then Sebek could swim faster than the human. Then Sebek could chop more wood.
It was meager, Silver still won more often, and he never could get much further, faster, stronger, but Sebek was on Silver's level.
Silver had brushed him off at first, which infuriated Sebek. Sebek was worth his time. Sebek was worth paying attention to! He was going to be Lord Malleus' greatest knight, and no mere human was going to treat him like nothing.
"HUMAN!" He bellowed, fixing his stance on the loamy soil. "ARE YOU EVEN TRYING?!"
"Why do you shout all the time," grumbled Silver, squaring his shoulders, practice sword held true. "I can hear you fine."
"AAARGH," Sebek cried as he ran toward the human, their swords clacking against each other, both children trying to keep their footwork up on the soft earth.
Then, Silver shifted his foot, held steady, and pushed Sebek back, weight heavy against his sword. Sebek struggled not to fall, his legs stumbling and threatening to slip.
No, no, not again! Silver had beaten him 3 times that day already! The two children were covered in dirt, Sebek even more so, and Silver had almost fallen asleep twice. And even then. Even with Silver already getting snappy, whining about Sebek's volume, and looking slightly listless, he kept beating Sebek!
What would it take? What would it take for this-, this human to take him seriously!
Sebek readjusted, managed to catch himself, and stepped aside, where Silver got caught off balance. Sebek grinned, and used that to his advantage, swinging his sword at his opponent. Silver's eyes widened, but parried in time, and they were back to returning blows.
Truthfully, Sebek was tired. Master Lilia had them doing drills, then swimming across the river, then climbing up and down trees. Silver wasn't much of a talker, and most of his responses to Sebek pressing him were clipped and frustrated.
As if Sebek wanted to speak with him anyway!
This fight lasted longer, with Sebek giving it all he had. Every lesson, every muscle memory, every strategy Master Lilia taught them-, he had to win this time! Silver actually looked harried, teeth grit as he moved in time to Sebek's swings. The boy was actually looking at straight at him, and Sebek wanted more than anything to keep those auroral eyes on himself. Sebek could feel it, as they closed in on each other—he would get Silver, he would beat him-!
Suddenly, Sebek's foot was caught—Silver drew his leg back, Sebek toppled backwards, and thud against the ground.
He lost.
Sebek stared up at the forest canopy, breathing hard. He lost. He rubbed his eyes with his arm, his face was hot and dripping with sweat.
Edging into his vision was Silver's face. Silver held out a hand, and without thinking, Sebek took it. He was pulled to his feet.
"Good spar," said Silver, who had let go of Sebek's hand, and his sword—both hands now resting on his knees.
"Hrgk" Sebek grunted. He was still winded, and now partially blind as his eyes were damp and stinging. Then, his stomach rumbled, loud and prolonged. Both children were stunned silent.
Then, "eheh," giggled Silver, shuffling toward him.
"Shut up," grumbled Sebek halfheartedly.
"I know somewhere with some fresh berries. Wanna have some, before my dad comes to find us?" Asked Silver, small hand reaching out toward Sebek.

Afternoon light curtained through the trees and shone off of Silver's hair, and illuminated his dark brown skin. It seemed as if he were otherworldly. Then clouds passed over the sun, and Silver once again looked like a regular human.
Sebek thought about what Master Lilia prepared for dinner the night before, then nodded quite emphatically.
The half fae took the human boy's hand, and the two children ran off deeper into the woods to find the treats Silver had promised to share.
—
The period following Malleus overblot was rough. Silver and Sebek had been hospitalized, which left both of them antsy, especially with Master Lilia and Lord Malleus going with Styx to be medically examined and tested as well. Master Lilia did not respond to either of their messages, so the two boys had been left sulking in their hospital room.
When the retainers were both released, Lilia and Malleus still had not returned.
In that time though, the residents of Sage's island ultimately decided that their Liege would be allowed to return—as he should be, thought Sebek!
…
Sebek did not like to think more about it.
He nor Silver were recovered enough to train, so both of them occupied their time by walking around the campus when they met up in between classes.
"Mmm. It was disrupted, but before this, I often walked with Jade."
"So you've said," Sebek muttered. Did Silver have to bring him up? Sebek did not like any of Silver's peers, but those from Octavinelle were particularly slimy.
"I was hoping to pick it up again. And since we are already doing this, I was thinking, would you like to join us?" Silver asked, head tilting toward Sebek.
When Sebek looked at him, Silver seemed casual, and had asked without expectations. And that was probably right, but something tingled uncomfortably under Sebek's skin. Before he could respond, they heard someone call out to them.
"You two, good morning," greeted Riddle as they approached him, the man watching over Ace and Deuce cleaning soot off the school walls. "I see you both are recovering nicely."
"Not quickly enough," said Sebek, gruffly. "How can we protect our Liege once he returns?"
"It's concerning to not have heard from them all this while…" Said Silver, arms folded. He had a light frown as he thought of his father and their Liege. Silver did not talk about it, but Sebek knew that Silver missed his father. The man had worried a crease on his blanket as he stared out at the moon during their shared hospital stay. Silver still struggled with the fact that he was the Dawn Knight's biological son, and once whispered to Sebek, wondering if Lilia simply did not want to speak to him. Sebek berated him for three minutes straight, then they sat together near the window discussing the wartime tactics of both the Everknight fae, and the Silver Owls. Silver was still restless, but Sebek kept him busy, and he would not leave Silver to stew in such nonsense thoughts.
"Normally I would say I wouldn't worry about Malleus' safety. Now, however," Riddle shrugged. Nearby, Deuce threw a sponge at Ace, while Ace snickered and tossed a bucket of water at him.
"Behave you two!" Shouted Riddle, as he stomped his way toward the first years.
The retainers had left soon after that.
When Lilia and Malleus were finally back at Diasomnia, Silver rushed toward his father and hugged him tightly. Master Lilia seemed taken aback, but returned the hug with as much vigor. Sebek could not help but sob for the happy scene before him.
Malleus horn was broken, but there was a lightness about him that made Sebek's heart flutter. Lord Malleus and Master Lilia settled in once more to their school life—things busier now with campus restoration, exams, internship preparations, and the interscholastic tournament—but their unit was whole again. Silver and Sebek rested easier.
—
Sebek found himself thinking about the needed arrangements for Silver's birthday celebration.
He had taken it upon himself to lead preparations of the Diasomnia lounge, after all. Everything had to be made perfect, as Silver was one of Malleus' loyal retainers, and thus a reflection of their Liege. Silver had done the same for Sebek's birthday.
"I tried my best," said Silver after the party, when non Diasomnia visitors had left. "It's not something I have much experience in."
"Don't make excuses," said Sebek. They were sat down at a small round table. Most of the party accoutrement had been cleaned up and put away. Sebek prepared tea, and he and Silver wound down from all the excitement.
"Sure," said Silver, "you're right. I did choose to throw your party." He shifted in his seat, then picked up the cup that Sebek had poured for him. "I'm also glad that you invited your first year friends. It was nice seeing Ace, Deuce, Jack, Epel, and Ortho, again."
"They're not my friends," Sebek said, clicking his teeth against the ceramic.
"Your peers—"
"As if any of those humans can be a peer to a superior fae—"
"Ortho is a humanoid. And honestly, Sebek, it really is embarrassing when you talk down about others like that. I see you speak excitedly when you are around them. And they too insist on your presence. What are they if not your friends?"
Sebek scrunched his face and sipped at his tea. Silver was making more and more of these comments, and it left a bitter taste in his mouth. They were not fae, so of course they could not be his friends, or peers. They had somewhat impressed Sebek when they fought together in Malleus' dream realm, but of course they could also be better. Sebek was simply humoring them with his presence.
"What about me? Am I not your peer?"
Sebek threw back, "we trained together under Master Lilia! Years and years of dedication! None of those fools have what we have."
"And the fact that I am human?"
Sebek spluttered with indignation.
"Hmph! Master Lilia raised you, did he not? You should understand what I mean, Silver!"
They had argued about it, but Sebek did not want to argue on his birthday. He ground his teeth, and took a loud sip of his tea.
Silver drank his own tea, and there was a prolonged silence between them.
"I enjoyed myself," said Sebek, after a time. "The celebration was satisfactory."
Silver tapped his foot against the stone floor, pleased with the compliment.
—
Silver had dressed the lounge in its signature green, with warm gold accents, and earth tones to ground the bright colors together. Sebek had thought it look dignified, and festive, fitting for his birthday. Though Silver himself did not make these choices—when Sebek inquired, Silver mentioned reaching out to their upperclassman, Cater Diamond. He was a club mate of Master Lilia, Riddle had mentioned his skill with decorating, and the two had seen it for themselves in the Heartslabyul student's dream. Silver said he sent a letter to the Zigvolt household, and Sebek's sister had sent a message with a digital link to a recording of the classical records Sebek had listened to at home. Of course, his favorite would be the recordings of his Liege's own performances! Sebek's grandfather had gifted them those.
For the food, Silver had foolishly requested help from the ever suspicious Octavinelle.
There were succulent roasted birds, beef with rich gravy, juicy pull apart pork, fried and steamed fish in light sauces; large cheeses, various pastas, rice dishes, loaves of bread, and potatoes; all manners of vegetables, and delicious fruits arranged enticingly on big plates; little desserts in large quantities that can easily be sampled, so that all may be tasted; and of course, Sebek's favorite, specially plated just for him. Begrudgingly one of the most delicious Salmon Carpaccio he's ever eaten—though still no match to the ones he has had at home.
Sebek had never been as full as that night.
Hmph!
Delicious food notwithstanding, Silver was pulled in to extra labor—alongside a payment he had made! Sebek did not understand why Silver needed to work at the Mostro Lounge. Silver mentioned those slippery eels 'requested' that he work with them, but that was not part of the deal, from what Sebek heard!
Sebek did not take kindly to fools trying to take advantage of Malleus' resources, and went to confront those eels, but those two had simply snickered. They said that Silver just wanted to 'help out'! Hmph! Silver himself said the same, and that it did not interfere with their training, but Sebek knew that Silver oft got himself into situations of that nature. It would behoove Silver to be more discerning of what individuals he would lend his hands to.
"Why would you ask for their help, of all people? I'm sure you know of their malignant reputation?" Sebek had petulantly stomped his foot. Was Silver not concerned about how it would reflect on Malleus, to associate with them? Did Silver not see that these people only wanted to use up his time, and attention, when it would be better spent elsewhere?
"It's better to judge people yourself, Sebek. And besides, we spend time with Jade, do we not?" Silver stood across him, arms folded. He had just returned from the Mostro Lounge, and he stank of oil, grime, and smoke. Silver's condition made Azul wary of putting him to work in the kitchen, and his stoic face did not help with customer service, so Azul Ashengrotto had mostly set Silver on the manual labor of receiving the restaurant's delivered supplies. The Mostro Lounge was coincidentally refreshing their stock that week.
"Joining us on 3 of our survival excursions hardly counts as 'spending time.'"
Silver had invited Jade on their training. For the most part, the Merman was content to do his own exploring and hiking. At night, they would sit together around the fire, Jade insisting on them 'trying his meal.' Sebek initially refused, but well… Even their well packed provisions seemed meager in the face of a hearty dish. It was good, he could not deny it, and he had to stop himself from eating it all.
It seemed that Jade would increase the amount he brought the more he joined them. The Merman would smile suspiciously, saying, "Oh Sebek, it does make me quite pleased to see you eat well."
It left him feeling perplexed, and Sebek attributed it to exhaustion from a hard day of training.
Silver frowned at Sebek.
"Fine. But I do spend time with Jade. We hike. We forage."
"Silver-!"
"Don't tell me that that hardly counts. I have interacted with Floyd, and Azul sometimes, too. They are my friends, and as long as I keep up with my training, and with my studies, I can also spend time with others as I see fit. Did father not say he wanted us to learn from the world outside of Briar Valley, Sebek? I'm sure you heard it too, unless your ears were too filled with wax."
Sebek snarled back, but he did not have other words to argue with.
Silver glowered at him, then turned to head to the washrooms.
"And I know you liked the food when we ate out together at the Mostro Lounge. Just let me handle your birthday preparations, Sebek."
And Silver was gone.
—
Sebek had enjoyed the food, yes, but he spoke to the other Merman after the fact, and Sebek came away thinking that that man was even worse than his brother.
"Ehh Croc, you have nice things to say about my cooking?" Said Floyd as he leaned against the wall. They were both standing next to the kitchen's double doors. He flashed Sebek a lazy grin.
"Hmph!" Sebek scoffed, annoyed at having forgotten that this eel was the one who cooked at the Mostro Lounge. He scowled at the wall, regretting his request.
"… What? Louse got your tongue? I'll be pretty pissed off and squeeze ya 'til you pop if you got me out the kitchen to say nothin'." Floyd said, tilting his head. His tone seemed playful, and lighthearted—lacking the abrasive edge those words usually carried.
Sebek turned to face the eel. He brought this on—he will do what he set out to do! Annoying eel be damned!
"Floyd Leech! The food we consumed tonight was exceptional, so on behalf of my Liege, I extend my appreciation! Even a mere human can create something worth recognizing!"
Floyd raised a brow at Sebek, and jut out his chin as he repositioned himself.
"Forreal? What kind of lame praise is that?" Floyd pouted.
"Excuse me?!"
"And is that really from Sea Slug? Or are you just being shy when it's really from you."
Floyd snickered, and leaned in; leering at Sebek with his downturned mismatched eyes. Sebek crossed his arms and held his head high. Floyd was tall, but Sebek was nearly his height. He would not be cowed by this human.
"I fail to see how I am being shy!"
"Jellyfishie said you might be too embarrassed to say what you think, and look at ya attributing it to someone else."
Sebek balked.
"Eh, I guess you really don't have anything to say. Go figure."
The eel was testing him, but he could not back down from this wretched accusation.
"I AM NOT EMBARRASSED! I RELISHED EVERY DISH, AND ATE WITH TRUE GUSTO. IT WAS A SATIATING MEAL THAT CAN RIVAL ANY OTHER ESTABLISHMENT. IF I WANTED TO, I CAN EASILY DOWN SECONDS, OR EVEN A THIRD HELPING WITH EQUAL ZEAL.
SEE IF SILVER CAN SAY I DON'T SPEAK MY MIND FREELY!"
Floyd gave him a sharp toothy grin, and pulled away looking satisfied.
"Heh, really? Thanks, Croc," he said, and winked at Sebek.
Sebek grew hot and confounded. He stomped out, lost for words.
—
Sebek himself made no such pacts with outsiders. He properly enlisted the aid of his dorm mates, and saw no need to ask for outside intervention! Sebek had ensured that Silver's birthday would be perfect.
He of course made sure that there would be the rich green of Diasomnia decorating the lounge—varying shades, along with the noble color of black. Lilia had suggested an accent of blue, then their Liege put forth pink as a supporting color.
"Tsk tsk, Malleus! I know my son best, and blue really goes beautifully with his complexion!"
"The warmth of pink will make his hair shine all the more, and do you not want to match your son?"
Sebek clapped his hands together, hating to interrupt, but wanting to speak up quickly.
"Master Lilia! My Liege! Those suggestions are both perfect! I think they both can be the ideal combination to support the mighty colors of Diasomnia!"
Lilia grinned and waved his hands energetically, "Right, right! You're the party master, I nearly forgot! I think whatever you do will be so delightful and vibrant!"
Malleus put a regal hand on Sebek's shoulder.
"You're doing well, Sebek. I look forward to Silver's party."
It had taken a lot of strength for Sebek to not burst into tears on the spot!
As for music, Sebek had intended to curate his own playlist… but when that human, Ace, had snuck a peek at his list, he was laughed at most offensively!
"Dude, really? Just old classical music like what you had at your birthday? That's so stuffy and boring, wahahahah. Silver is a weirdo like you, but surely he's not as old fashioned."
"HOW DARE YOU," Sebek shouted, standing up from his seat. Beside them, Jack grimaced and his fur fluffed up in annoyance. Epel rolled his eyes, and Deuce sighed as he watched the two of them. Ortho was sat down, swinging his own legs, happy to watch as well.
"SILVER HAS MORE CAPABILITY OF APPRECIATING BRIAR VALLEY'S TRADITIONAL MUSIC, AS OPPOSED TO YOUR PLEBEIAN TASTES." He sat down and crossed his arms to punctuate his point.
Ace kicked his legs underneath the cafeteria table.
"Ugh, shut up, loud ass."
Sebek kicked Ace back, and soon they were both kicking each other.
It only ceased when Deuce set them apart, then suggested Sebek try using some music Silver had heard in Clock Town and said that he 'liked'. Sebek doubted it, but in reality, he had never really seen Silver listen to music on his own. The man had little other past times. Silver trained, and studied, and that was all well and good, but Sebek sometimes thought there seemed little other room in Silver's head besides sleep. (Maybe that was better than all the walking around with Jade Leech Silver was supposedly doing these days…)
Silver had gone with Deuce and the other first years to Deuce's home town, and came back glowing, and with stories to tell Lilia and their Liege at the dining table. So, perhaps there was some merit in Deuce's suggestion. Sebek mixed in several lively Clock Town songs alongside his chosen music.
For food, Sebek was practical, and used both his dorm mates, as well as the cafeteria ghosts, as resources. Malleus always ensured Diasomnia was in top shape, so students had to participate in dorm affairs in one way or another. Anything they could get done in the dorm kitchens before the day, Sebek had made sure it was prepared and delicious. For hard to obtain ingredients, he was able to strike a fair exchange with the cafeteria, needing to only run a few errands for the food.
Everything had culminated to today, May 15th. Classes for the morning rushed by, with Sebek buzzing in his seat, mentally going over all the preparations. There would be a volunteer group who can quickly magic up the party decor after school, and the music was already loaded up on the dorm's old sound system that had been donated by an alumnus way back when. After classes, he headed over to the cafeteria to pick up his most important request.
What else but Silver's beloved mushroom risotto?
Something about it enthralled the man, and Silver ordered it for lunch whenever it was available. It seemed a bit boring, to eat the same food every day, but Sebek also knew what Silver had grown up eating. Compared to that, well… Silver is allowed some vices.
This had been his very first request to the cafeteria ghosts. It was a must have, and Sebek knew that it would please Silver to no end.
He knocked on the cafeteria door, and entered immediately.
"Ghosts!" He announced, looking around for his order. "I am here to pick up the risotto!"
"Erm," a ghost mumbled, floating down to Sebek. "About that."
"Eh?! What is wrong?" Sebek straightened his back, suddenly alert.
"We don't have it"
"What?!"
"We don't have it, alright!" The ghost threw their arms up.
"What do you mean, I had requested this dish 2 weeks ago! We went over the mushrooms, the rice, the cheese—IT WAS ALL HERE WAS IT NOT?"
"Alright kid, it's a bad scenario but if you keep shouting we're gonna have to kick you out."
Sebek crossed his arms to hold back, and chewed on his lip.
There was a beat, then—
"Disappeared."
"Hrgk?"
"The ingredients vanished. We looked all over, but they just aren't here no more."
Sebek scrubbed his face with his palm. He really did not want to deal with this. But, it seemed that someone was deliberately sabotaging his party plans! Sebek could only really think of a few particularly shady individuals who might have done this. Silver was a man of few words, and few close friends. Of course, he could handle anybody and anything—but not many understood Silver enough to actually stay in Silver's company.
There were specific persons though with associations with food, parties, and Silver, that made them probably suspects in this mushroom risotto heist. And there was someone who Silver kept mentioning that Sebek felt highly likely to be the culprit.
"Arrghhh how dare they!" Sebek barked, shook his head roughly, then stormed off to Octavinelle.
—
Sebek stormed into the Mostro Lounge, having pushed aside a stammering freshman.
"JADE LEECH!" Sebek yelled. He would not let this hooligan ruin Silver's celebration!
"Sebek Zigvolt," Azul slid in from nowhere, simper on his face. "A rare patron! As much as we enjoy your voracious appetite, the Mostro Lounge is still closed, you know. And we do not take kindly to rabble rousers. You would not want your housewarden to hear that you caused a scuffle at another dorm, would you?"
Azul was shorter than Sebek, but he stood with the confidence of a housewarden. This was his domain, and Sebek could sense how untrained he was in the face of a powerful upperclassman.
Sebek fumed, unused to holding his tongue. But he needed to get past Azul to get to the eel, and Sebek did not want to bring shame to Lord Malleus name by acting… foolishly brash.
He needn't have worried. Octavinelle's Vice sidled in from behind, nearly surprising Sebek with a, "now, to what do I owe the delight of your presence, Sebek?"
Sebek spun around, and pointed, "you know very well why I am here, Jade!"
"My apologies, but I am afraid not," said Jade with a placid smile. "This is a restaurant. Might you be here to eat? I am afraid you are rather early."
Sebek glared.
"I am not here to play games. Silver's mushroom risotto—you took it!"
"My, my, what a horrible accusation." Jade looked surprised, both his hands going up. "Whyever would I take something of Silver's. He is one of my dearest friends, you know."
"His birthday-!"
"Oh, so it is!" Jade put his hand on his hips and grinned. "That is wonderful, then. Happy birthday to him!"
Behind Sebek, Azul sighed. Sebek could see Jade glance over at him, and blinked.
"Perhaps you would like to have this discussion in my office?" Said Azul, gesturing to the door with a flourish. Sebek did not want to. He only wanted to throw the most perfect birthday celebration that Silver could ever wish for. And throw a better one than Silver's one for him. He met Jade's gaze, and the eel led him into the office.
—
"Tea?"
"No."
"A shame," said Jade, folding his hands together. His expression remained inscrutable. That had always irritated Sebek. It was so unlike Silver's, who in comparison was easy to read.
Sebek had only started interacting with Jade with increased frequency the closer the man got to Silver. How could he not have noticed? Jade seemed to worm his way into Silver's life out of nowhere, stealing away Silver's time and attention. It did not help that Silver also wanted to invite Jade to their training. They both have offered this chance to others before, but Sebek never expected anybody to take it. Training needed consistency and dedication. Training was his and Silver's time.
But Jade would appear, mostly when Sebek and Silver ventured out to the island's forest for their outdoor training. The Merman was nosy, and asked sly questions. It was difficult to ignore him, especially when Sebek was tired and hungry. It always felt like Jade would hover over him, or Silver. Sebek would see him, leaning over Silver, standing very close to him… it was frustrating and strange. Silver said it was Jade simply being friendly… but there was something there, Sebek felt.
Sebek and Jade had remained standing, despite Azul's chair and desk setup. The octopus clock on the wall ticked loudly.
"You say you had nothing to do with the sabotage. Hmph! As if I could believe you!"
"Ah, but I don't suppose you have proof, Sebek?" Asked Jade, who seemed reproachful, but was nonetheless entertained. "It's not noble nor knightly to blame others for your oversight."
Sebek could feel how Jade pushed at him, wanting him to react. A growl rumbled from his chest, and he screwed his eyes closed in an attempt to calm down. Maybe he should have taken the tea. When he opened his eyes, Jade was still staring at him, amused.
"It was not an oversight," Sebek scoffed. Then, "are you really Silver's 'friend'?"
The thing was, Silver seemed to talk very positively about Jade. Sebek often thought that Silver was too soft on the rapscallions of their school, but the man was no fool. He had sharp instincts, and a keen eye. Why then, would someone that Silver liked so much try to meddle with him?
Jade raised a brow.
"But of course. I would do anything for Silver. If you rushed here with tears in your eyes, begging for us to save your party—I would have no choice but to help you."
"I would never do such a thing," Sebek groused. What a humiliating vision.
"I suppose you will not need assistance then, for your emergency?" Said Jade, tilting his head inquisitively. "A shame that Silver would not have his risotto for today. But it is only just a dish, really. I am sure the celebration would be fine without it."
Sebek glowered at Jade. Jade did want something from him, then, and invoked Silver in the process. Everything was so roundabout with these hooligans. "What's the catch, eel."
"A catch?" Jade grinned sharply. "Think of it as a fair exchange. I will bring mushroom risotto for Silver. Then, I would like for you to come to Mostro Lounge to eat, four times a week. I will have to spend some time during work to make it, and this is a rush order. Surely you understand the effort on my part."
"Four times a week?! That is not a fair exchange! Once. The less time I spend at Octavinelle, the better." Eat at the Mostro Lounge? Sure, Sebek can eat there, it was not like it was very hard… but it was the principle of the thing! Sebek cannot let this roughneck take advantage of him.
Jade clapped his hands together. "Stinginess can be ugly in the face of generosity. Four times a week for a month, perhaps. You enjoyed eating here, did you not? Our service is exemplary, and Floyd is masterful in the kitchen."
Sebek looked at the clock—it was nearly the adjusted time he and Silver had set for the day's training. He should not waste more time arguing with Jade—he did not want for Silver to think that anything was amiss.
"I am not some indulgent beast! Once a week for two weeks. The Mostro Lounge is not that pressed for customers." Sebek could not believe he was having to bargain such a deal. "Don't toy with me!"
"Once a week for four weeks. Bring Silver, if that makes it tolerable for you!" Said Jade, clearly enjoying himself. "Is it really that difficult of a request for you, Sebek? I thought this would be such a simple task that even you would not find much objection with it."
Sebek tapped his foot. Jade stood there in this same pose he adopted since coming in, with the same irritating expression—Sebek could feel that the eel was taking pleasure in needling him.
"Hrgk. For only a month and that's it."
"Splendid!" Jade exclaimed, then conjured up a plain piece of paper. "Let us get this in writing to formalize it!"
"I am not-"
"Nothing like Azul's contracts," said Jade, and wrote something up. "This is so we don't twist each other's words, yes?"
Sebek read through it ten times, checked that it was about eating at the Mostro Lounge; that there were no extra 'this or that' stipulations; that there was not anything 'needed' from Silver, nor his Liege, nor from anyone at Diasomnia; that once it was over, it was over. The contract itself did not feel magical. Nothing seemed amiss, but one never knew, with them.
Was Sebek really going to do this?
His phone buzzed, with a message from Silver.
"Interview over. See you soon."
Right.
Sebek was not going to let them ruin the party that he had so meticulously planned.
"If you don't make good on your deal-"
"Worry not," said Jade, and tapped the paper. "I always make good on deals, and for Silver, it would be a pleasure."
"Hrm…"
Sebek signed it.
Jade took the contract and spelled it away. He then started to herd Sebek out of Azul's office.
"Now, we still have to open the Lounge! I will set time aside for the risotto, and Floyd, Azul, and I will have to make sure everything will be all good here for the rest of the night. We were all invited to Silver's birthday, after all!"
Argh! How could Sebek forget!
He was kicked out of Octavinelle.
—
Silver was already at their training grounds when Sebek arrived.
This spot was relatively spacious, and out of the way for most students that they needn't worry about being bothered. Still, they had to formally request to use the space. Night Raven College received a wide range of students, and that had included retainers, personal guards, and the like—that meant such students could need to keep up their regimen.
There was still process that needed to be followed, a bit like requesting a space for school clubs. Silver and Sebek kept up paperwork, and made sure to keep the grounds tidy and neat, the greenery relatively healthy, and the soil intact.
Silver was leaning against a tree, still in his interview outfit. His clothes were covered in sand; his skin coated in a thin sheen of sweat; his hat tucked underneath one arm, and his hair look artfully tousled. The makeup on his face was either smeared or just nearly gone from Silver's own efforts. It seemed like he was on the verge of drifting off.
"Silver!" Sebek barked as he approached. "Were you filmed looking this disheveled?! What did I say about preserving Lord Malleus' reputation and dignity!"
"Sebek," said Silver, alert once more as he pushed himself off of the tree. A charmed smile danced on his lips. "I had shown the viewer how the beach would be a great spot for training. It was a lively and energetic demonstration."
Silver seemed extremely pleased, and proud. Like Sebek, Silver knew how to utilize any environment for bettering themselves. Silver had excellent form, and a powerful physicality. Silver probably had given a spirited performance for the camera. Hmph. Sebek hoped then that Silver's learned fae sensibilities would shine through to the viewer.
This outfit was not the best way to show it off, though. Sebek huffed.
"Hmph! Then I hope your efforts pay off." He simply said.
Silver let out a pleased exhale, then changed into his gym clothes with a spell. Sebek had already changed in a rush before he arrived. He had studied the quickchange spell after the overblot incident, but… lacked the practical skills. Damn you, Silver.
—
Training was over.
The retainers sat, shoulder to shoulder as they both gulped down water for hydration. Sebek appreciated this winding down, and they often walked back discussing their work, analyzing for vulnerabilities or key actions that they could learn from.
It was almost party time, however, and Sebek vibrated with anticipation.
"Oh yeah," Silver spoke, breaking their amicable silence. "Before we wash up and receive guests at Diasomnia, want a snack?"
"Silver, we will have plenty of food later, you know!" Pouted Sebek, an indignant hand on his hip. "Don't waste the efforts of everyone by coming to your own birthday full!"
"It's just a sandwich," Silver insisted. "We can halve it."
"And what makes you think I want half of your sandwich?"
A loud rumble punctuated his query.
Silver raised a brow, and smirked. Sebek flushed and huffed, but took half the sandwich when Silver presented it to him.
It was cold, but still good—a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich with cherry tomatoes in sourdough bread—it was fatty and salty, and only made Sebek hungrier after it was consumed. The egg had a jammy yolk, the tomatoes were fresh and acidic, and the cheese was sharp and crumbly. Ugh, where did Silver even get this sandwich? Sebek really could not wait to eat later, a full proper meal. Silver should have gotten a sandwich for each of them instead, so Sebek would not be left craving like this.
Silver bumped shoulders with him, before getting up to put away his things. Sebek followed suite, and started pressing Silver on the ridiculous technique he tried to employ earlier.
Silver insisted that it was not ridiculous, and they continued to argue about it all the way to Diasomnia.
—
Silver was redressed in his suit, Lilia insisting that his son wear it at the party because he looked 'so dapper and charming.' Lord Malleus had magnanimously spelled away the oils and grime off of the outfit, so that it was back to a cleaner state. Silver had simply planned to wear his dorm uniform, but this ensured that he stood out in the sea of black and green—his suit a nice cool toned berry red. It also complemented the tasteful blue and pink drapery and balloons Sebek tried to tactfully employ. Sebek gave Silver a onceover, readjusting Silver's tie, and ensuring that the outfit's hardware was properly secured. Silver regarded his fussing with light annoyance, but let Sebek do as he always did.
Students were already bustling about, piling food on their plates and chattering, Malleus having given a toast to Silver's 18th, and Silver wishing everyone a good dinner.
The two retainers stood side by side, greeting the trickle of non Diasomnia students who were slowly arriving. Silver played host, while Sebek waited for a certain someone.
Ruggie Bucchi had been the first—he arrived before most others in Diasomnia, and even had Jack in tow. Riddle Rosehearts followed them, punctual as he always was.
"Thanks for inviting me, Silverrr! Happy Birthday!" Said Ruggie, handing Silver a box of expensive Sunset Savanna dried meat and fruits.
"Likewise, Silver, happy birthday. It is good to see you looking crisp and proper today," Riddle said. He gave Silver a small wrapped gift. "Padded socks. These should comply with our current Equestrian Uniform."
"Silver Vanrouge. Er. Thanks for inviting me," Jack said, swishing his tail.
"I am glad you could make it, Ruggie, Riddle," Said Silver, as he let the three students in. He put his gifts on a nearby table. "Jack. It is good to see you again. Any friend of Sebek's is a friend of mine."
"I wouldn't miss out on party food for the world, awright!" Ruggie cheered, and gave Silver a fist bump. Silver smiled.
"I would not say we're fr-" Jack started, before Ruggie elbowed him in the ribs.
"Don't mind my underclassman, Silver. Jack, go enjoy yourself and don't be a stick in the mud."
Jack scratched the back of his head, but followed Ruggie deeper in.
Silver, Sebek, and Riddle spoke lightly of upcoming Equestrian events, before he too continued inside to partake of the festivities.
"Why don't you hang out with Jack, Sebek?" Silver asked, folding his arms behind his back. "You should enjoy the party too."
"Hmph, and leave you to usher in outsiders alone? I still am Lord Malleus' retainer! I must keep an eye out for troublemakers."
"Hm." Hummed Silver, knocking his shoe against Sebek's. Sebek responded in kind.
—
Sebek and Silver continued to greet guests at the entrance. Most made an effort to stop and speak with Silver—the man having gained mild notoriety for being a prince himself, though Silver always brushed it off.
"Being a knight is enough for me."
Hmph, thought Sebek. That was right. Silver understood his place, like Sebek, and that was their lifelong role serving under Lord Malleus. It would not feel right, if Silver was not by his side.
More people arrived, and the rest of a familiar first year group ambled in, which should not be a surprise, Sebek supposed, as Silver knew most of them already.
The gala was over, the ambient temperature was restored to its normal condition, and Silver was resting at the Diasomnia lounge still dressed in his shimmering suit. He had brewed coffee from Shaftland beans gifted to him from Jack Howl, as a sort of apology for ruining their cover. Sebek had his own mug, which he sadly dumped condensed milk and brown sugar into. He still was not worthy enough for black coffee. They sat pressed against each other, Silver wanting to decompress from the mission.
"Hmph. Coffee is a poor apology for nearly provoking the diurnal fae. They were lucky you were there, Silver!" Sebek said, stirring his coffee, spoon clinking loudly.
"Riddle and Leona did request for me to join the mission, so such a contingency was planned for," Silver replied after a long sip from his mug. "I am glad that the queen enjoyed our show. That means our practice paid off. Ortho, Ace, and Jack all brought their own flair to our performance. Vil taught us well."
Sebek dipped the tip of his tongue into his mug. The taste of sweet milk.
"I could have done just as well," he grumbled, lapping up more coffee.
"You should have gone then," said Silver, "be with your fellow first years. They're clever. That was why you were drawn to them, right?"
"You know as well as I why I could not be there," said Sebek, wrinkling his nose. "And I was NOT drawn to them! You told me of their weakness, and I was merely serving the needs of Lord Malleus, and Diasomnia, by helping the Humanoid, Ortho!"
Diurnal and nocturnal fae had their own poor history with each other. Things were at a tentative peace now in these modern times, but that did not erase the past. Silver carried different fae's blessing, but the fairy dust masked the blessings for the most part. He was mostly human, after all.
But, he was a human who grew up amongst the fae. Silver knew the fae as intimately as if he were one—taking after Lilia, learning from him, and growing up as a fae would—as much as a human could, anyway.
Sebek would know.
"Mmm, sure," murmured Silver, flicking his pinky at Sebek's hand. Sebek flicked his pinky back at Silver's hand, and a slurp of coffee spilled over and on to skin.
"Drat, sorry, sorry," Sebek said, putting down his mug and fumbling through his pockets for a handkerchief.
"It wasn't that hot, so don't worry," Silver deflected, taking the cloth Sebek passed to him, and cleaning up his hand and the table. "And luckily it did not get on the outfit. I think I still have to return this to Professor Crewel."
"That's good then…"
—
Deuce brought a large gift basket, its heft sinking slightly against Silver's arms.
"My mom sent this over as soon as I told her you had invited me," he said, sheepish. "It's got a lot of Clock Town snacks and treats—cookies, tarts, salty seed crackers, stuff like that. She's also asking when you will come back and visit."
Silver looked thoughtful. "Thank you Deuce. I would love to come back—I'm sure Lord Malleus, Father, and Sebek would also enjoy a visit to your home town. It was a very lovely place, and it was nice meeting your mother."
"O-oh! Well! Sure! Malleus and Lilia and, erm, Sebek can totally come over too!" Deuce stammered, not expecting Silver's response.
"I never said I wanted to go," pouted Sebek.
"Don't be rude," said Silver, then handed Sebek the gift basket. It was nothing to a superior fae's strength! But… it was definitely large and unwieldy. Sebek brought it to the table with the rest.
"Hah! What, you scared of a dragon?" Ace teased, elbowing at Deuce. Deuce gave him a sour face.
"No! I want to show off Clock Town! It is a beautiful town, and Silver's family are one hundred percent welcome to visit!" Deuce shot back, and the two Heartslabyul first years continued their back and forth as they walked further into Diasomnia. Epel and Ortho followed, the both of them excitedly greeting Silver and Sebek.
"Silver! Thanks for showin' me how to hold your baton right the other day," Epel bounced on his feet, and waved his own pen in the air. "You reckon I can join you and Sebek for some sword swingin'? Things have been pretty busy for me at Spelldrive, but I think I can pop by sometime this month!"
"It's not mere sword swinging, Epel!" Argued Sebek, and they had a spirited discussion on the semantics of sword swinging.
Ortho flew around them, and handed Silver a rubber keychain with a pretty design, one with a sword, flying birds, and a suns rays. It was also attached to a little device, with a small screen and flat buttons. It was dark blue, with an engraved wavy line on one side, and a triangle pattern on the other.
"These are from my big brother and I, Silver Vanrouge!" He said, projecting a hologram with what looked like a schematics of the device. "My big brother had this keychain, and I said it suited you! He felt awkward just giving that, so he decided to make something useful too—isn't he amazing!"
"Idia Shroud is quite a genius," Silver agreed, failing to understand what the hologram meant. "So what is this?"
"Ah, it's a little contact signal direct to STYX! It's connection is quite powerful, so it can work even in the magically dense Briar Valley, where most electronics struggle. If ever you are in an emergency situation, this will be the fastest way to reach us! Here, let me show you how it works."
They fiddled with the device, Ortho showing the two retainers a short video Idia had created.
"That's very thoughtful, Ortho. Thank you. Thank you to Idia as well."
"Hmph! As if we will ever need such a thing," Sebek huffed.
"I hope to never use it," Silver agreed. "That would mean we would have failed in our duties. But having a plan is always important."
Sebek would never fail their Liege again, and neither would Silver. This was simply a frivolous object to Sebek. Still. Silver said some sense. The man tucked the object into his front pocket to keep it safe.
"Of course, and this one is the best one, according to my analysis!" Ortho chirped. "I was also very excited to attend your birthday, and it is only proper to bring a good gift!"
Silver thanked the two of them for coming, and they joined the rest of the first years, who seemed to have some argument going on amongst themselves.
Sebek's eyes scanned the entrance, and chewed on his lip.
"Waiting for someone?" Said Silver, also scanning the entrance. They both could cover more ground that way… though that was kind of meaningless in the face of a normal door.
"I am wondering if you're still receiving more guests." Sebek groused. "The birthday celebrant should enjoy his own party and mingle with his attendees."
"I could say the same for the party organizer," said Silver, raising a brow.
Sebek just rolled his eyes. His duty would not be over until Silver's birthday was over. It was the birthday celebrant's duty to enjoy himself.
And well. Sebek knew that there was still a key ingredient that was still missing.
So, they waited together, unspeaking, standing side by side. The party bustled around them, party goers bopping to Clock Town music, eating party foods, and chattering on without a care. Those rowdy first years had carved a spot for themselves in some corner of the lounge; Riddle was speaking to some other 2nd year classmates; Ruggie was going back for a 3rd helping from the buffet table. Master Lilia was nattering on to those other Heartslabyul upperclassmen, the Vice, and the one who helped Silver for Sebek's birthday. Lord Malleus was chuckling at Grim, the both of them eating spoonfuls of ice cream—Malleus from a hand crafted dish, Grim, directly from a pint bucket.
Was this good enough, Sebek wondered. Sebek had regretfully not been around for Silver's 17th. Neither of them ever had lavish parties before coming to NRC. If there was a party in their dorm, it was hard to avoid, but the idea of inviting others to attend one's own event was foreign to the two boys. Sebek had preferred the company of his books to any of his classmates in middle school. And when he was able to train, he had thrown himself into it.
Silver grew up in the forest, never attended school, and thus had no friends to speak of. Sebek was there for most of Silver's birthdays—it had mostly been them, and Master Lilia, and Lord Malleus. Perhaps some animals. Sometimes Sebek's family was able to join them. But Master Lilia lived deep in the woods, and no one else came to visit.
Sebek glanced over at Silver, who seemed unbothered not being more amongst the throng of the other students. He was swaying, but not to the beat of any song. It seemed… he was drifting off.
Right. This was the effect of a curse cast on to Silver from babyhood. It changed nothing, but Silver had come from a time long before him. It was only through a series of horrible occurrences that Silver was beside him today. Was it ok, to want Silver here, in this time? For Sebek to be glad that Silver had lived past everything, that he was found by Lilia, that he was trained to become Malleus' knight—that Silver was Sebek's rival, and equal?
It was only Lilia who had known about Silver's true origins before the overblot, and still kept him. Loved him. Silver should have already known this. How much his father cared for him. For what reason would the General of the Right house a human boy?
Lord Malleus had guided them on magic, had come to Silver's birthdays, and on occasion, fed Silver edible food. After the incident, when the two fae had returned, what had their Liege done? He praised them for their efforts, and had said he was proud to have them as his retainers. Sebek could have fainted on the spot.
Silver then should understand that he was needed right where he was, and need not worry of not belonging.
He reached out to rouse Silver, when someone's voice startled Silver awake instead.
"Yo, Jellyfishie, Croc! Are ya waiting here just for us?" Floyd called out, crossing the foyer in three steps, then reached down to squeeze Silver's face. Sebek squawked, and grabbed at Floyd's arm. Silver in turn held Sebek's wrist. Jade, grinning, and Azul, with raised brows, followed in. Floyd giggled and wheezed, and stuck his tongue out at Sebek—Sebek failed to see what was so hilarious about seizing someone so brazenly.
"Hello, Floyd." Said Silver, tugging Sebek's hand back. Sebek let go reluctantly, and mumbled a rough apology after a reproachful look from Silver. Yes, Sebek knew that Silver could handle himself, but did Silver have to chastise him like that? Sebek crossed his arms and frowned at the Octavinelle trio
Floyd smirked, let go Silver's face, and leaned against his brother. Jade bonked his head against his twin's.
"Hello Jade; Azul. I am glad you were able to come, even with the Mostro Lounge still running today."
"Silver," said Azul, with a flourish of his hand, "As if i could miss the celebration of one who worked so tirelessly to wake us from that nightmare."
"I was simply doing my duty," said Silver, bowing his head. "I am grateful for everyone's support, as well. Without everyone, Malleus, and my father…"
Silver trailed off, unsure of how to continue the unspeakable thought. The mermen respectfully said nothing. Instead, Silver bowed his head again, and stood aside to let the Octatrio pass through.
"Thanks for the sandwich, by the way, Floyd. I split it with Sebek."
"Did Croc enjoy it then?" Said Floyd, who then grabbed and squeezed Sebek's face.
"Ugh, unhand me you fiend," Sebek said, trying to unsuccessfully twist his face out of Floyd's grip. He retaliated by pinching Floyd's cheeks, and pulled. The Merman chortled, and squeezed harder, mildly shaking Sebeks face from side to side.
"What did you think of my sandwich," said Floyd, also being shaken to and fro. "Tell me, or else Jellyfishie isn't gonna get his nasty gross present."
"Be nice. Sebek liked it, he ate it in 3 bites," Silver said, amused.
"Silver!!!" Sebek whined. "Don't say that!"
"He was he frustrated to only have half a sandwich."
"Noooo, Silver!"
They continued their scuffle. Floyd tried to get Sebek in a headlock, but failed. Then Sebek was able to get Floyd in a headlock, and was shouting, "no! No! I did not like that sandwich! I ate it as a favor to Silver!"
"That doesn't even make sense," Floyd thrashed about, pushing Sebek this way and that. He also reached up and smacked Sebek's face. Most people were used to Sebek's loudness, and Floyd's rowdiness, so it did not even ping concern to the partygoers. Still, Silver, Jade, and Azul watched the two have their spat.
"Should we do something?" Asked Silver. "I don't want Floyd to get hurt."
"No, he's enjoying himself," said Jade. "Let him endure it."
The other eel stepped close to Silver, and held up a high walled ceramic dish with a glass lid up for him to see.
"Floyd's hurtful, words aside." Jade said, "I agonized over this dish, made it using only our finest ingredients-"
Azul coughed into his fist.
"And I am quite excited to give it to you, Silver. Although this was a special order, think of it as a gift from us, as well."
"Along with 1 special birthday bash value voucher for the Mostro Lounge."
"Yes, that too."
Floyd stopped writhing, managed to escape Sebek's hold, and pointed at the dish.
"Eugh. Not from me. I'll give you something way better than that shit when you come over to eat, Jellyfishie."
"I'm sure you would also enjoy it if you tried it, Floyd," said Jade, feinting a step closer.
"Blegh," Floyd stepped back, arms raised to shield himself from the food.
"What is it?" Silver craned over to look.
"An order from Sebek, special for you. Come closer," Jade beckoned.
Sebek watched as Jade lifted the lid and allowed Silver a closer look. He saw Silver inhale deeply, his eyes widened and cheeks flushed in excitement.
"Can I take this?" And only half waited for Jade's affirmative before removing the dish from Jade's hands, and made a beeline toward a table with a free seat. Sebek, and Jade quickly followed.
"Utensil, Silver?" Asked Jade, presenting a spoon to the other man. He must have picked it up from the serving table when they crossed the room, thought Sebek distractedly.
"Thank you," Silver replied, attention fully to the mushroom risotto. He took it, then spooned a generous amount into his mouth. The two men watched Silver savor the taste of the risotto, chewed it, then swallowed loudly.
A beat of silence, then-
"Fuck" Silver exclaimed, looking at the both of them, awestruck. He dove in for more, eagerly eating directly from the dish.
This really was for Silver alone to enjoy, Sebek supposed.
Sebek and Jade simply watched Silver devour the risotto as if he were famished. It was rather astonishing to Sebek, and he felt, deep in his gut, that it was the right call to have Jade Leech make this for Silver. He did not know what to do with this feeling. It was a bit repulsive to him. Why could he not be the one to give this pleasure to Silver? He was the one who was closest to Silver first—not this eel.
He looked over to Jade, who was observing Silver intently. He had a sly look, and a total and complete satisfaction about him. He was the one who manipulated the situation in order to do this. Was this really what he wanted to happen? Sebek just couldn't understand it. When had Jade Leech taken such an interest to Silver?
Jade glanced over, and Sebek found them meeting each other's gaze. The eel smiled at him knowingly.
"That is my fulfillment of the contract." He said, "I eagerly await your arrival at the Mostro Lounge later this week. And all subsequent weeks! Eheheh."
"Hrmph." Sebek grumbled, but a deal was a deal. "Whatever. As long as Silver is happy."
Jade nodded, and turned back to Silver.
"As long as Silver is happy"
—
Silvers had already eaten most of it by the time he was self aware enough to look a little bashful for his risotto induced reverie. He replaced the lid on the dish, and bowed his head slightly toward Jade.
"Jade. That was wonderful. Thank you."
"Oh my," said Jade, his hand placed delicately on his lips. He seemed giddy from the praise. "I am glad you enjoyed it so much, Silver. I had harvested the mushrooms for the risotto quite recently. I had ones growing in the greenhouse, but I felt that wild flavors of forest grown fungi would compliment your tastes more. I would love to take you to where I found them, if you are interested."
"Jade, I would be honored if you did," said Silver, nodding solemnly. Certain mushroom spots were prized and sometimes kept secret, to avoid undue attention.
Jade tittered.
"But let us not forget that this was all because of your birthdays esteemed organizer. He planned this risotto for you from the start after all. I merely executed it to the exact specifications needed." He gestured toward Sebek.
Sebek shot Jade a look, unsure of what the Merman's intention was—but Silver turned his full attention toward him, and so Sebek did the same. Silver's expression was soft and open, and his lips were still a bit wet from his meal. Sloppy.
It was maddening.
"Silver, wipe your mouth!" Sebek said, fervently. "Observe cleanliness at all times!"
Silver rolled his eyes, and used his wrist to swipe across his face. That did not wipe his smile.
"Sebek. Thank you. So far, today has been perfect."
Perfect.
"W-well, of course! It would behoove you to not expect less of me, Silver! I always aim to show you who is the better retainer, and I could not let what you did for my birthday stay unchallenged!"
"Heh. So was it more than satisfactory?" Silver had a hand on his hip, head cocked confidently.
"You know what I meant!" Arghhh! That Silver!!!
They debated over party details, with Sebek saying they made more of an effort to rely on Diasomnia's own resources, while Silver argued that Sebek had been loudly praising Silver's music choice, not to mention Sebek just eating all the food..
Jade slinked away to find his twin. There was a whole party to savor, after all.
—
Kalim and Jamil had arrived fashionably late, with the both of them carrying a stack of gifts that Silver and Sebek both had to handle. There were colorful plastic sheets wrapped around a basket of fresh fruits; large cardboard bags with satin ribbon flowers attached; small boxes neatly wrapped in fancy wrapping paper; a few packages whose wrapping were messily creased and folded, with more tape than was necessary, but nonetheless covered completely.
"Uwauughh Silver, it was so hard deciding what to give you! At first, I thought, maybe I should give you some cool swords? You are going to be a knight right? You could decide on which one to use depending on the day! And then I thought, maybe you needed other cool guard accessories to show that you really mean business! It was rrreeally exciting looking through item catalogues, and it would have been fun to shop around for different things-!"
Jamil coughed, and said, "It was impractical to give you so many dangerous, heavy weapons."
"Right, right!" Kalim was bouncing on his heels, still excited to explain his gifts.
"I appreciate the thoughtfulness," said Silver, "it would take years to master a multitude of tools. While interesting, it would be wasteful if any of them were to languish in disuse."
"Item catalogues?" Sebek questioned. For what, weaponry and armor??? There were craftsmen who might perhaps show off their capabilities, but Sebek knew of no craftsmen nearby.
"Don't ask," Jamil remarked. He stood close to Kalim, and had a sling bag with Kalim's dinner packed inside. With the flurry and distraction of finishing up Silver's gifts, they had not yet had the opportunity to eat.
"So, Jamil and I went through every single idea we had, snacks, clothes, maybe games—Lilia said you guys gamed together sometimes! It was tough thinking of what could be the perfect gift!"
"It was," Jamil said, nodding along, face serious. "And it was difficult to narrow things down."
"Na-haha! Yes! So I said, why not get you some of each category! You would still have variety, it would be less trouble for you-"
"And us."
"And us—a win win situation all around, ahaha!"
They were still armfuls of gifts, thought Sebek. Silver did not even buy much stuff for himself, let alone have much use for random frivolous items. But Sebek held his tongue, for Silver's sake.
"Thank you then, Kalim. I will look forward to opening these. I hope you enjoy the rest of the party."
Kalim jumped up, and raised up his hand, and he and Silver shared a high-five.
That was. Disconcerting, for Sebek, to say the least.
"Come, Jamil! Let's dance!" Kalim said, as he grabbed Jamil's hand.
"Agh, Kalim, wait!"
The Scarabia housewarden pulled his Vice deeper into the Diasomnia lounge.
—
Silver and Sebek had done their own mingling throughout the night, bip bopping around the party goers and ensuring that everyone was enjoying themselves.
Sebek watched Silver. The man was lit up, excitedly checking in on guests, even though most of their conversations remained mundane. Those closest to Silver mostly brought up the goings on within the school—structures that needed to be set up for the tournament, which new cafeteria snack tasted best post incident (as the school received a few generous gifts from worried parents), if Silver had done this homework or that, or simply a casual remark on Silver being energized this day.
Though, it was mostly because in the moments where a wave of sleepiness hit Silver, Sebek was there to rouse Silver back to wakefulness. Silver was appreciative; Sebek grumbled, and said that it was nothing.
Kalim had managed to get his own music loaded up into the sound system, and the crowd rearranged themselves accordingly; the lounge furniture had been cleared to make way for dancers. Sebek had wanted to fix the issue, but Silver dissuaded him, and said that he should let others have their fun. Silver himself did not mind.
It was the principle of the thing, thought Sebek. One does not touch another's things, let alone the Housewarden of another dorm. But Silver insisted that he did not want Sebek parading over there and 'making a big deal of it', so he sat there, fuming.
Beside him, Silver sighed.
Sebek looked over to him, and met his gaze, and the two of them shared a long look.
"Let's step out into the garden," Silver said after a time, and he took Sebek's hand. Sebek followed, and they wove around the throng of people who were earnestly enjoying themselves.
Of course, the Scarabia Housewarden and his Vice danced most passionately, themselves attracting their own set of admiring onlookers. Lilia and Cater moved wildly together, their coordination a little messy, but also carefree, their three years of knowing each other lending some knowledge in the other's movements. Ruggie shimmied and grooved, able to move through the crowd with quick feet and deft hands. Deuce threw his arms and stomped his feet, often accidentally elbowing his friends, and they in turn elbowed him back. But still, their little group seemed happy, with Ace dancing quite naturally alongside Deuce, dodging flailing limbs, and hip checking his fellow Heartslabyul. Ortho was trying out various moves he had downloaded and studied, and Epel was bouncing about with a sort of frenzied grace. It had taken a while to draw Jack into the rhythm, but he was surprisingly smooth dancer, his large body moving in tandem with Epel's footwork. At times Ortho would take someone's hands and they would spin around, and loud laughter resonated from the first years. Malleus himself was not left out of Ortho's dance calculations, with the both of them ending up flying through the air, the fae cackling like he's never done before.
Somewhere in the sidelines, Riddle stood there, arms held close to his body. He preferred to watch the crowd, and there were no rules in this case that necessitated he dance. Azul was talking his ear off besides, and they argued about classwork and which technique was best used for a certain potion they needed to brew. There were several documented processes for a single potion, and things were still hotly debated over which way was superior. Beside them was Trey, glad he could easily tuck away and not draw attention. He had brought a few boxes of tarts and pies, which Silver graciously received, and laid out on a table for others to partake of. Those boxes emptied quite rapidly when everyone had been dining and mingling with each other. This brought him a deep sense of contentment. That was enough of partying for him.
That was until Malleus had landed from his airborne stint, and he pulled Trey along to join him and Ortho.
"Clover! You must try this!"
"N-no, thank you!"
But alas, Trey could not escape it.
—
The two retainers stood, still holding hands in the thorny garden outside of the dorm, and they watched fireflies flicker and flutter around the greenery. The loud music was muffled through the stone walls, and colorful party lights shone from the castle windows. It was an uncommon sight for Diasomnia. Rather disruptive, thought Sebek, and irreverent. But that was partially his doing.
When Sebek focused his gaze back on Silver, he observed the man's hair glittering under the moonlight. Silver looked good in this outfit, Sebek thought. The short jacket flattered his muscular chest, and the black shirt and tie lent Silver a more refined air. Silver himself rarely dressed this crisp. Sebek preferred to see all of Silver's hair, but the hat did suit him as well.
"Is something the matter?" Sebek inquired, squeezing Silver's hand briefly before letting go.
"Nothing much," Silver replied, folding his arms, his fingers drummed against his arm. "You were getting worked up."
"I was not," Sebek groused. His curated playlist had been interrupted. He wanted to fix it—was that so wrong?
"Sebek. It was a nonissue. Everyone is having a good time back there." Silver tapped his foot, and looked directly at Sebek. "I want you to be having a good time too."
Sebek frowned at him, and mirrored his pose.
"I was having a good time. I am having the best time."
Silver tilted his head ever so slightly—doubtful.
Sebek jut his chin out, defiant.
"I am simply basking in my success. If you are enjoying the celebration, rest assured, my enjoyment is tenfold! A hundredfold!"
And it was true. Sebek was by Silver's side the whole evening, and he soaked in every smirk and every subtle lilt to Silver's breath. It was not that he needed proof, because Sebek knew that he tailored the party to Silver, but does a craftsman not wish to see his masterpiece please its recipient?
Bewilderment passed through Silver's face, but then it was overtaken by a gentle expression. "Sebek… thank you, really. I am glad to have you by my side."
"Silver. I keep telling you that it is nothing. Cut it out." This was what they did.
Silver chuckled. He shifted to rest his arms behind his back when he said, "I just want you to know, you know? That I am grateful. Often, I think back to the darkness. It was an all consuming dread I had never felt before. I. I was afraid that there was no way I could go back and face my father. Face Lord Malleus. After what I learned about myself." Silver sighed, and looked away.
"I could not believe you, even after our fight. But something in me said, Sebek exerted all his efforts for me. It would be a waste to not honor it. And so I let you pull me out of the darkness."
This again? This wretched thing?
Sebek growled, and he clasped Silver's shoulders with both hands.
"SILVER! GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL! IT WOULD BE A WASTE BECAUSE YOUR LIFE IS EVERYTHING TO ME, AS IT IS EVERYTHING TO MASTER LILIA AND TO OUR LIEGE!"
Silver's brows were furrowed, and he said, "Why do you have to shout all the time when I can hear you just fine?"
"Silver!"
But Silver was actually grinning, "Sebek. I know." And he reached out, and rested his hand against Sebek's jaw.
They stood there, silent, and determined, for a long time.
Until there was a loud rustling, and crunching of leaves coming from a nearby thicket, and two torsos leaned out from behind a tree.
"Haiiii." Said Floyd.
"How fun!" Said Jade.
"W-what?! Why are you two reprobates here!!!" Shouted Sebek, disengaging himself from Silver, and waving his arms indignantly. Silver waved very sweetly at the Leeches.
"Hi Jade, Hi Floyd."
"I think we are the ones who should be asking, why are you fellows here." Said Jade, as the two eels fully dislodged themselves from their hiding spot and ambled toward them.
"You can't just turn that question around without answering! And this is our dorm, we have every right to be here."
"Eheh but Croc, Jade n' I were invited to Diasomnia, and so we have every right to be here too ya know."
"No. You're wrong. That doesn't make sense!"
"It's ok, Sebek." Said Silver, as he reached out and squeezed Sebek's arm. Sebek was puffed up and alert, but he could not let this surprise cloud his senses. He reluctantly backed down.
The two Mermen both had leaves in their hair, and lopsided grins. Jade fastened the top button of his dorm uniform, while Floyd had thrown an arm around his twin—it did not look like they were heading back to Diasomnia.
"I don't approve of eavesdropping," said Silver, hand on his hip, "but if there is anything you guys need, we would be happy to help."
"Don't include me, Silver."
"Ah, well," said Jade, as he placed a hand on his chest. "It seems Floyd and I missed the change in the tracklist. It sounds quite exciting in there, and I was hoping if perhaps I may steal some time away with the birthday celebrant?
"Sure," responded Silver, "I have to return the favor for that excellent risotto you made."
"Silver, you are too kind," said Jade.
"What about me," exclaimed Sebek, affronted. But he realized how childish it sounded after the words left his mouth. Sebek reddened with extreme embarrassment, and folded his arms, unable to say more. Silver gave him a fond look, but offered no reprieve.
It was just! What did Jade want with Silver? Do they not already see each other often, in whatever shared classes they have?
Floyd wheezed, extricated himself from Jade, and stepped into Sebek's space. Sebek stayed where he was, and huffed. And this one-!
"Don't be jealous, Croc-!"
"What? I'm not jealous-?!"
"I'll dance with ya. I want to get back in there, anyway, it's getting too itchy out here," continued Floyd. Then, catching Sebek off guard, he spun Sebek's heavy body around, and started pushing him back to Diasomnia.
"What, what, I did not assent to this," Sebek squawked, trying to dig in his heels in the dirt. Floyd was putting his whole ass into shoving, and two trackmarks were being left on the soil. Both of them were just blurrghh-ing and hrrgh-ing as the two struggled against each other.
"Sebek," said Silver. "I think it will be fun. We haven't danced today, so why not try it?"
"Consider it." Jade called out approvingly. "Surely, the rest of the guests are missing out, the party organizer not even engaging in his own work."
"Don't be shy! I'll definitely show you a good time, Croc." Floyd cackled, then he smacked Sebek's ass.
Sebek spluttered. What was happening?! Sebek felt like he'd been plagued by these eels, as they made him feel strange and more irritated than ever before! As if he wanted to dance with Floyd! The eel just smacked his buttocks!
And if he were to dance with anybody, then-!
Silver continued, "however, I understand that you haven't had much practice in dancing-" and Silver shrugged. There was that stint, in the dreams, where they had to somehow copy NRC's performance from the VDC. That was something, was it not?!
"You think I cannot dance, Silver?! Don't be idiotic! Don't think I did not hear of your initial performance practicing for the Fairy Gala!"
Sebek could dance! It was deliberate footwork; it was the purposeful movement of one's own body; it was physical response to the surrounding environment—Sebek knew those things!
"Can you prove it?" Asked Jade, smiling with his hands on his hips. "Silver was successful at the Fairy Gala, regardless of bungled practice attempts. You however, Sebek, do not have any dance achievements to speak of."
"I CAN PROVE IT!"
"Great then!" Said Floyd cheerfully, continuing to shove Sebek forward, making incremental progress. Jade and Silver caught up to the pair, and walked alongside them.
Sebek could not believe this. He just couldn't.
He huffed, grabbed Floyd's arm, and dragged the other eel with him to Diasomnia. Floyd snickered, and waved back at Jade and Silver.
—
Sebek was terrible at dancing.
He seemed to not know how to 'move it to music', and had ended up stepping on Floyd on more than one occasion. The eel himself would get irritated, and mocked Sebek's efforts—Sebek would bite back, and called Floyd a poor and inconsiderate partner. They circled each other, throwing insults. Floyd clicked his tongue.
"Listen to me, will ya, Croc? You got no ear for music, so now I gotta direct you so you don't keep making a fool of yourself."
"I can do this myself," Sebek grumbled, having bumped into Floyd for the fifth time so far. Floyd can leave if he's that pressed, Sebek did not need him! Sebek can 'dance' on his own just fine.
"What was that?" Floyd said sharply, pressing close to Sebek as they moved in tandem. It lacked the easy harmony that allowed Sebek and Silver to move as one.
"I'm listening," Sebek said, gritting his teeth. Floyd rolled his eyes, but adjusted his footwork, prompting Sebek to match him. The eel was not shy with his hands either, and pushed Sebek this way and that, the palm of Floyd's hand pressed against Sebek's body. It helped somewhat, but Sebek felt flustered by having to be taught like this. It made his skin tingle. They were not graceful, nor did they work well together, but at least Sebek had stopped crashing into Floyd.
Despite the sharpness, Floyd had not yet stomped off. And so they still 'danced' around each other whilst Jade was monopolizing Silver.
"Are ya really that pressed over Jellyfishie, Croc." Said Floyd, in between their fumbling footwork. "Still bad at dancing lol."
"Shut up." Sebek huffed as he concentrated their movements. It was a complex game of avoiding Floyd's hands, as the Merman switched up to more aggressive directing. "And I don't know what you mean. I am as I have always been with Silver."
"Always, eh?" Floyd mused. "C'mon, do this instead." And he lead Sebek through the dancefloor, showing him which beat of the music he could probably try moving his body to. "And relax. Your stiff arms look real stupid flailing around like that."
Sebek rolled his eyes, but he did try and loosen up. He was not someone who was 'easy going' like one such as Floyd. He needed his body to be ready to fight for Malleus at all times, like a coiled spring. But… Floyd was right this time. Sebek was not able to harness his skills as effectively for dance. However, Floyd's style did not suit him much better—it was simply the one he had to follow.
"Whaddya think of Jade," asked Floyd as he moved close to shift positions, his hip against Sebek's like a fulcrum to a lever. Sebek turned, and their connection point severed.
"Is that a trick question," he scoffed. "You Octavinelle are capricious and scheming."
"Eheheh. Sure. I meant Jade specifically, though." Floyd said, and threw an arm over Sebek's shoulder, and the other laced through Sebek's hand, and the made a mockery of movement dancing like that. They must look stupid, thought Sebek. But, it did come easier to him.
"Tch. He wastes Silver's time." Admitted Sebek. It felt good saying that to the man's twin.
"Eheh really?" Floyd looked smug. "Well, I can waste your lame time too."
"What?"
A mischievous look passed Floyd's face. "C'mon let's do this," he said, grabbed Sebek's hands, and let his body fall backward. Sebek huffed in surprise, but held strong—the momentum allowing Floyd to swing around the half fae, while Sebek turned to follow. Floyd was laughing—his long flop of hair whipped through the air. Sebek too could not help but let out a delighted breath from the rush. He then stepped back, and pulled Floyd to a stand.
Floyd kicked one leg back. "Ta-da~!"
"Hm, not bad." Sebek beamed. That felt good to execute. Maybe he could get the hang of this. Hah! Just watch out, Silver!
"Ok, your turn!" Floyd said in a sing song voice, swinging their arms from side to side.
"No."
"Eh, why not."
"Just! No!"
"Tch, don't be a pussy, Croc. I'm not gonna drop ya."
They had a stare off. Floyd wagged his brows, leering at the man. Behind him, mid distance, Sebek could see Jade and Silver talking, awkwardly fumbling around their secluded corner. Hrgk.
"Grhk, ok fine!"
"Yesss."
And so Sebek fell back, gripping Floyd's hands. He swore, if this eel let him drop-!
Instead, Floyd started to swing Sebek, adding his own force in turning him. Floyd leaned back as well, feet pushing into a run as he and Sebek started spinning faster. By the time Sebek realized what was happening, he could not easily stop. They spun wildly. Sebek cursed Floyd, yelled at him to stop. Spinning.
Floyd just laughed.
Fuck this, thought Sebek.
The half fae tried to get a better footing on the floor so he could stop this nonsense, but there was no easy purchase. His shoes slipped on the smoothened stone. Floyd then yanked his arms, and fell back completely; Sebek tripped on their legs, and the both of them crashed to the ground.
Sebek was disoriented, his knees were throbbing sharply, and his face squashed against Floyd's chest. Floyd's legs were on either side of him, and the Merman squeezed his torso with them. Below him, he could feel Floyd wheezing and giggling by the way his face rode the up and down wave of Floyd's chest more than hearing it. There was a crowd around them consisting of students who jumped out of the way from the earlier Floyd-Sebek vortex. Eurgh, was all Sebek could really think.
"Even your head is fucking heavy, Croc." Said Floyd, who brought his hand to roughly run his fingers through Sebek's hair. It felt good. His hair was getting messed up. "We should do that again."
"No," Sebek groaned, trying to peel himself off. Floyd held his head in place. Sebek blindly tried to find Floyd's face so he could smack it. "Let go."
"Sebek, Floyd," called out Silver, who was now at their side. The other boy kneeled down, and did a careful onceover. "Floyd, did you hit your head?"
"Nah, i'm good, Jellyfishie."
"Sebek… are you alright?"
They both must have looked ridiculous like this.
"I'm fine."
Sebek could feel Silver slip his hand between them to support Sebek's chest, and one wrap around Sebek's body. At some point, Floyd had let go of him, making it much easier for Sebek to push himself off with Silver's help. Sebek could have done it on his own, but sure, he can allow Silver to feel useful.
When Sebek was sat on his knees, both he and Silver had reached an arm out to Floyd. The boy snickered, and took each arm, and pulled himself up.
Jade, who had been standing there watching this whole time, leaned against the kneeling Silver, then slide his body all the way down until his butt hit the floor.
"The both of you were a delightful sight," he said, grinning toothsomely. Sebek gave him a whithering look. Floyd stuck his tongue out at him.
—
The party was over, and Silver and Sebek made sure that every non Diasomnia student left promptly. The decorations were spelled away; the dinnerware had been sent off to be scrubbed clean; Silver's gifts were in a pile in Silver's half of the room. A peace settled back into the dormitory as students went off to take care of forgotten tasks.
Lord Malleus congratulated Sebek on a party well done, and Sebek could have fallen to his knees and kissed his feet. He refrained. Master Lilia cheerfully ruffled Sebek's already messed up hair, and said that the Pop Music club found it a smash hit.
That felt oddly validating.
Silver thanked them as well for attending, and Lilia squeezed his son, and said that he would never want to miss Silver's birthday now.
Soon it was just the two retainers left in the Diasomnia Lounge.
"Tea?" Offered Sebek.
"Sure," Silver accepted, and the both of them walked to the dorm kitchen.
Silver leaned against the counter as Sebek prepared the tea. Silver's face was soft and handsome, but also looked tired from their long day. It was a miracle Silver had not yet drifted off of his own volition. It had been a while since Sebek had seen Silver this pleased. He was smiling right at Sebek. Beaming, really. It was extremely distracting, and Sebek told Silver so.
"That doesn't even make sense," he said, folding his arms, tilting his head to the side. "Don't look at me then."
"You're right there," grumbled Sebek as he placed tea leaves into the warmed teapot, then poured over the hot water. "It's not as if I can simply look away."
When Sebek looked back up, Silver had shifted closer, and was just watching him. Those bright auroral eyes whose gaze Sebek felt needed to be on him. So that Silver would understand who his rival was. And so that Sebek knew that Silver was paying attention.
"Those eels," he said as he poured two mugs of tea. "Are your friends."
"They're my friends," Silver agreed.
"You should get better friends."
"My friends are fine, Sebek."
They've had this argument many times, but the air felt lighter, this time.
"Hmph," Sebek scoffed. "I have to keep a closer eye on you then, lest their terrible influence affect the way you serve our Liege."
"Is that so?"
Sebek handed Silver his mug, and they sipped their tea. The moon shown through the window into the low light of the kitchen, on to the two retainers who leaned shoulder to shoulder against the counter. Sebek's knuckles brushed good naturedly against Silver's left hand, and Sebek flicked his pointer finger against the other. Silver returned the gesture.
"You'll have to keep up then," said Silver. "They're astute fellows."
"Hmph. Don't think so little of me, Silver!"
Silver chuckled. "As if I do."
