got a feeling (wounds are healing)

Summary:

Yuu’s entire world tilts sideways at the sound of her given name paired with the diminutive honorific coming from Rei’s lips. She can hardly manage to stammer out a, Y-yeah! before Rei has circled around her and started down the next aisle, disappearing from sight. Yuu’s heart pounds helplessly in her chest, and she stands, frozen in place, forced to confront some unexpected truths about herself in the middle of the grocery store at six-thirty a.m. on a Tuesday.

Because—

Holy shit.

She’s had crushes a-plenty before, but none of them ever left her feeling quite so warm inside as the woman who can create ice with her bare hands.

after the war, yuu bumps into endeavor's ex-wife at the grocery store and finds herself utterly enchanted

Work Text:

Yuu is on a normal grocery run when her life changes forever.

Okay, well—maybe normal is a bit subjective considering the whole, you know, war that just happened. Rebuilding efforts are still underway across the country, and Yuu garners more attention even out of her hero costume now than she ever did pre-PLF raid. Her “normal” grocery runs have turned into six a.m. grocery runs because no one in their right mind is getting out of bed at the ass-crack of dawn to buy food, so she’s less likely to encounter fans and skeptics alike.

So, she’s at the grocery store before sunrise, still half asleep as she tosses things into her cart. She’s really not paying attention to where she’s going because there’s, like, three people in the entire store right now, so she rounds the aisle without slowing down as much as she probably should have—

—and her cart collides with someone else’s.

The crash startles her awake, and she jumps, instinctively preparing for a fight before she remembers where she’s at.

“Sorry,” she apologizes, shaking her head to clear the reflexive panic. She’s learning the hard way that being on the front lines of a war leaves some lingering psychological effects that refuse to leave now that the danger has passed. “I wasn’t watching where I was…”

Her voice trails off as she finally gets a good look at the person whose cart she bumped into. Icy blue eyes and snow-white hair cut short with burn scars on her face and hands that look…recent.

“Oh my God,” she says, before she can stop herself. “You’re E—”

She slaps a hand over her mouth. Endeavor’s wife is what she meant to say, though that may not actually be true anymore, if the rumors are to be believed. Yuu prides herself on being up-to-date with all of the latest pro hero gossip, and she’s heard from both Miruko and her own student interns that Endeavor and his wife have separated. Though no one seems quite sure whether they’ve gone through with a legal divorce or not, it’s clear they’re not currently acting as a married couple.

“Todoroki-san,” Yuu corrects, because she figures that’s a safer name to use. “Um. Sorry for crashing into you; I hope you’re not hurt—”

“I’m fine,” Todoroki assures her. “I’m afraid I was lost in thought and not properly paying attention to my surroundings, so it’s certainly not your fault.” She offers Yuu a tired smile, and Yuu’s heart jumps into her throat. What is that all about? “And please, just Rei is fine.”

Her voice falls over Yuu like a blanket of fresh snow on a quiet winter morning—gentle, though certainly capable of destruction if so inclined. Yuu’s breath catches in her throat, and it takes her several moments to stamp down the fluttery feeling in her stomach.

“Rei-san,” she says, just to taste the name on her tongue. She bows her head. “I guess we’ll just split the blame. How does that sound?”

Rei laughs lightly, lifting one hand to cover her mouth. Yuu is immediately overcome with the desperate need to hear the sound over and over again. “I suppose that is the only fair solution.” She moves her cart away from Yuu’s, angling to circle around her. “Perhaps I will see you around, Mount Lady.”

Yuu groans. “Seriously, how does everyone clock me?!” She’s dressed down, and she didn’t bother curling her hair or doing her makeup. That used to be enough to get by unnoticed, unless she happened upon some crazy superfan. She’s going to have to up her disguise game.

“Your scar,” Rei answers. She points to her own face, above her eye, mirroring the scar Yuu obtained in the midst of the PLF battle. She didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but…

She sighs. “I knew I should’ve covered it when in costume.” Unfortunately, she had about a thousand other significantly more pressing matters to deal with at the time. Her willful negligence of it is probably the reason it’s so visible in the first place, but if she dwells on that, she’ll just start thinking of all the things she could have done better in the fight, and that’s a spiral she can’t afford. It’s all done and over with now anyway.

“Truthfully,” Rei muses, “I find it nice that you don’t. There is nothing wrong with scars, especially for a hero as courageous as you.”

All of Yuu’s thoughts screech to a halt.

“Oh,” she says dumbly.

“I have long-since stopped caring how my appearance comes across to those around me,” Rei continues, “but I remember what it was like to be a young girl. If someone in the spotlight allows their scars to be seen, then those with no means to cover their own will have someone they can look up to.”

Absently, Yuu brushes her fingers over the scar on her brow. She hadn’t thought about it like that—she wasn’t thinking about anything apart from defeating the League of Villains and All For One at the time, and these days, she’s been more focused on aiding in rebuilding both the city and the reputation of heroes in the eyes of those with lingering doubts. If things were how they were before, she absolutely would’ve slapped makeup over it from the get-go, for the sake of keeping up appearances.

But Rei has a point.

Maybe she just…won’t bother with that.

It’s annoying that it gives away her identity, but the harm there has already been done. She’ll just have to keep making early-morning trips to the grocery store. Which wouldn’t be so bad if it means she’ll run into Rei again—though, hopefully not literally next time.

“You’re right,” Yuu acquiesces. “Thanks. I’ll see you around— And you can call me Takeyama.” She pauses. “Or, well, I guess calling me Yuu would make things more fair. But, like, if that’s weird—”

“That is a very nice name,” Rei interrupts. “I hope to see you again soon, Yuu-chan.”

Yuu doesn’t do anything crazy like track down where Rei lives or hack into the city’s camera system to figure out her daily schedule, but she also might go out of her way trying to force another “chance” meeting. She returns to the same grocery store at the same time each week, and she’s quick to jump on any jobs that will take her near that area of the city. She also might ask her interns if they’ve heard any more about where, exactly, Rei’s legal relationship status stands. By which she means she asks them if Endeavor’s ex has sealed the deal and officially left his ass for good yet.

Nishiya gives her a strange look at that, which she very pointedly ignores.

Kaminari shrugs, messing around with an All Might brand fidget spinner. “Todoroki-kun hasn’t said much. I figured he doesn’t want to talk about it, ‘cause the situation kinda sucks, you know?”

“Sure,” Tokage agrees, “but Endeavor is a grade-A asshole. If it were my mom, I’d be forging her signature on the divorce papers myself.”

“I do not believe this to be so straight forward,” Shiozaki argues. “It is much easier to make harsh judgments when looking in from the outside. You should offer Todoroki-san grace.”

Sero snorts. “But not Endeavor? Sounds like you’re judging too—”

“That is not—”

“Regardless,” Kaminari cuts in, shoving his fidget spinner into Shiozaki’s hands—likely as a distraction. At the very least, it works to confuse her. “None of us know for certain. I could ask Midoriya-kun if he’s heard, but I’m really not sure he’d know either…” he scratches his chin.

Nishiya lets out a long-suffering sigh. “Why do you even care about this?” he asks. “Never once have you sought out gossip concerning Endeavor, of all people.”

“Well,” Yuu says, and then stops. She presses her lips together, realizing too late that she doesn’t have a good excuse for this. If it were just her and Nishiya, she’d have no problem saying something like, I don’t give a shit about him; I’m interested in the hot MILF who’s leaving him, but she sort of figures that isn’t appropriate for her interns to hear. Especially considering at least three out of the four will take it directly back to Rei’s son. “Who wouldn’t be curious about the former Number 1 Hero getting dumped?”

Nishiya eyes her like he doesn’t quite believe she’s telling the truth. Which is fair, but can he save his skepticism for when their impressionable young students aren’t around?! She doesn’t need them prying into her sudden investment in Endeavor’s love life which actually has nothing to do with Endeavor at all. There is no possible good outcome to that.

“She’s right,” Tokage agrees. Bless her—she’s Yuu’s favorite intern out of the bunch. Edgeshot really picked well there. “I mean, I love knowing when dickhead men get what’s coming for them. Especially when they’re publicly ridiculed about it!”

Shiozaki steps away from her. “You are sadistic.”

Tokage curtsies. “Thanks!”

“That was not a compliment.”

Yuu breathes out a silent sigh of relief as attention turns to Tokage and Shiozaki’s bickering. She can feel Nishiya’s gaze lingering on her, but he doesn’t press the matter, so she’s safe for now.

Why did I just receive a message from Best Jeanist warning me that you may be attempting to court Endeavor’s ex-wife? 21:17

Yuu gets a call about a villain attack before she even makes it to the office in the morning. Which means she has to abandon her iced coffee after taking about three sips, and it also means that the first chance Nishiya has to confront her about the message she did not respond to is in the middle of a fight.

“I just feel that you should think this over!” he calls to her, like they aren’t actively chasing a villain through the streets.

“I did!” she argues, “And I concluded that Rei-san is hot as fuck!”

“That is not good enough reasoning!”

“Okay, well—” the villain takes a sharp left turn, and Yuu nearly loses her balance switching directions. “What about the fact that she’s nice? And tough! And leaving her piece of shit ex-husband which makes her totally single!”

“Have you even met her more than once?!”

“Once is all you need when you’re a love connoisseur like me!”

“You do not have a single good thing to say about any of your past boyfriends.”

“‘Cause men are shit! That’s why I’m turning over a new leaf and going for a woman instead. Kayama says—”

“Oh, right, because I’m sure your aromantic ex-situationship is the best person to go to for relationship advice—”

“Why do you even care?!” Yuu demands, skidding to a stop. Fuck the villain; all they did was steal some cheap clothes. Can’t the cops deal with that on their own? “If you keep hounding me, I’m going to assume you’re jealous, and you just want me for yourself!”

Nishiya drops to the ground beside Yuu. Apparently he has also deemed this argument more important than the job they’re supposed to be doing, so at least they can get in trouble together.

He jabs a finger at her chest. “I care because your relationships reflect on our team. I do not want you to soil our name by chasing after a woman who separated from a very notable and highly controversial public figure two months ago.”

Yuu opens her mouth to fight back, but before she can get a word in, there’s a loud exclamation of “Oh, FUCK!” followed by a crash and more swearing. Both she and Nishiya take off towards the noise, rounding the corner out of the alleyway the villain had tried (okay, succeeded) to escape through to find them on the ground, frantically and clumsily attempting to gather up their stolen goods, which must have spilled in their fall.

Did they trip?

No—

Yuu stops short, grabbing hold of Nishiya and forcing him to do the same.

“There’s ice,” she warns. Which is weird, because it’s not even fall yet, and the only hero she knows who uses ice is Shouto. Who should be at school right now.

While Nishiya uses his quirk to restrain the villain, Yuu looks around for the culprit of the frozen sidewalk. This street is pretty much empty right now—it’s a residential area, so there’s no business traffic. But it’s also pretty open, so there aren’t many places to hide…

There! A flash of white!

“Hey!” Yuu calls, dashing towards where the woman disappeared around the corner of the block. “Hey, wait up! Did you—?”

The woman turns, and Yuu finds herself face-to-face with none other than Todoroki Rei.

“Call it an accident,” she says, tucking her hair behind her ear. “I was startled by the villain. That’s all.”

Yuu swallows thickly. Rei is betraying none of the tell-tale signs of someone who has truly been shaken by the appearance of a villain—her eyes are focused, her breathing is even, her movements are steady, her speech is calm. If anything, Yuu would say she’s too placid for someone who just single-handedly stopped a fleeing villain in his tracks.

“Right,” she agrees, a beat too late. “Then, instead of thanking you, I suppose I should ask if you’re hurt?”

A warm smile settles on Rei’s face. She bows her head. “I’m alright, thank you. Please, don’t let me take any more of your time—you should focus on aiding your partner.”

“If you’re sure…” Yuu gives Rei a quick once-over, but she really does seem fine. Given that it was her ice which slowed the villain, it’s likely they didn’t even have a chance to get close to her, and they haven’t exhibited any sort of violent behavior either. “Just—”

Yuu pauses.

She shoots a glance back in the direction she came from, but she can’t hear any sounds of a struggle. Nishiya is more than capable of restraining a petty thief on his own, and Yuu’s quirk really won’t offer any help at this point. So, if she doesn’t need to immediately rush back, she shouldn’t throw away such a wonderful opportunity that the universe has so kindly given her.

She pulls her expression into the most serious one she can manage. “Maybe you should give my your phone number. So I can check in on you later?”

Rei’s eyebrows shoot up. “Oh? I wasn’t aware heroes take so much care for uninjured bystanders.”

Yuu falters. “W-well— I mean— You don’t have to, obviously, but— It would look back for the Lurkers if a villain we apprehended caused an untreated injury which turned fatal for someone as notable as—” She gestures vaguely. “You know. You.”

She mentally pats herself on the back for coming up with such a sensational excuse on the fly. Rei purses her lips like she’s holding back a smile, so maybe she didn’t exactly fall for it, but it was still a good one! it prevented Yuu from spilling anything humiliating like the fact that she all but begged Hawks for Rei’s number and that she’s been desperately yearning to see her again ever since that fateful morning in the grocery store.

“I suppose that makes sense,” Rei acquiesces. “Although, if you wanted my phone number for other reasons, you could have simply asked.”

Yuu’s heart skips a beat. Surely she heard wrong; surely Rei doesn’t actually

“Do you have your phone with you, or should I write it down somewhere?”

“O-oh!” Yuu’s thoughts snaps back into focus. “I do, yeah—” Given the circumstances of this villain attack happening while she was still on her way to work, she does have her phone on her, which isn’t common during patrols considering her hero costume has no safe place to store it that will keep it from getting shattered in the midst of a fight.

She unlocks said phone and hands it over to Rei so she can type her number in. She’s going to get an earful from Nishiya for taking so long with this, but the consequences are totally worth the reward. She’d gladly sit and listen to Edgeshot and Jeanist chew her out for a half hour because in the end, she still got Rei’s contact info. And now she can actually properly try to bag this MILF.

Rei returns Yuu’s phone a moment later, and if Yuu purposefully angles her hand so their fingers brush, well— Can anyone really blame her? If she wants even half a chance with Rei, she’s going to have to pull out all the stops, and this is an easy classic to start with.

“I’ll text later,” Yuu promises. “After we get this whole villain mess sorted out and I can actually, like, officially clock in.”

Rei laughs lightly. Yuu’s heart soars at the sound.

She tilts her head towards Yuu. “I look forward to it.”

(Fuck whatever Nishiya and Jeanist and the media might have to say about it—Yuu wants this cookie so fucking bad and she is not going to rest until she’s tried everything she can to woo Todoroki Rei.)

“So,” Edgeshot says, breaking the thick silence that has settled over the room. They’re doing their weekly Lurkers (plus Jeanist) get-together, at Jeanist’s place since Edgeshot is sort of stuck there for the time being. Nishiya is refusing to look Yuu in the eye while Jeanist has been staring at her judgmentally ever since she arrived. Edgeshot is the only one who has been acting normal, but because they’re a fucking worm, that doesn’t help much.

“So…” Yuu replies, poking at her food with her chopsticks.

“How have you been?”

“Good.”

“That’s good.”

Yuu hums. “How about you?”

“Same as usual.”

“Cool.”

The heavy quiet blankets them again. Yuu takes a bite of her food and chews slowly, trying to figure out some way to cut through the tension that does not involve directly addressing the elephant in the room. Unfortunately, nothing she can think of seems to be the sort of conversation starter that would get them out of this passive-aggressive silent treatment.

She lets out a sigh. “Look, I know Rei-san is, like, old enough to be my mom, but—”

“It’s not about age,” Nishiya bites out.

Yuu raises her hands in defense. “Oookay. I feel like this is maybe not a safe space all of a sudden.”

“I think what Nishiya-kun means to say is that we know you are both adults, and you are capable of discerning whether or not such an age difference would cause problems for you. However, when considering the specifics of this other person, it may have been wiser for you to leave this knot untied. Some frayed threads are not able to be mended.”

Yuu scrunches up her eyebrows. Usually, she can follow Jeanist’s sewing metaphors well enough, but this one seems a bit…off. “Just ‘cause she used to be married to Endeavor doesn’t mean she should stay away from getting in another relationship for the rest of her life. That’s dumb as hell.”

“That is not quite what I meant—”

“Well.” Yuu scoffs. “That’s sure what it sounded like. Nothing has even happened yet. I have her phone number, and we’ve talked a few times. That’s it. But if she does realize she needs a total hottie like me in the wake of her bitter divorce, I think she’s well within her rights to have exactly that.”

“Are you certain another high-ranking hero is what she needs right now?” Nishiya challenges. “Would it not be better for her to be with someone more…unknown?”

“Oh, and you have the right to decide that?”

“I just—”

“He is concerned for you,” Edgeshot cuts in. “Both he and Tsunagu are, because they care about you and don’t want to see you get wrapped up in something that believe will end in you getting hurt. However, I do believe they’re going a bit overboard. They’ve voiced their concerns, but you are not obliged to heed them.”

Yuu squints. “I can’t tell if that’s supposed to make me feel better or worse.”

“Neither. I am simply trying to put things in perspective for both parties.”

Yuu hmphs, crossing her arms over her chest.

Nishiya bows his head. “I apologize. I do not wish to overstep; as Kamihara-san said, I was merely trying to look out for you. I see now that I’ve been too harsh.”

Yuu clicks her tongue. “Fine. Whatever. I’m sorry for not taking you seriously, too.” She drops her gaze to her plate, still half-full. “I wouldn’t want to make things worse for Rei-san, in the wake of…everything. If anything does happen, I figured we’d keep it on the DL for a while.”

“That is not an easy feat for highly popular Pros,” Jeanist warns.

“You and Mx. Wormshot have managed just fine.”

Jeanist glares at her, but he can’t scold her for the comment, because Edgeshot chimes in with a, “She’s right, you know.”

“Her style is far more flashy than ours,” Jeanist argues.

“I can be subtle if I want!” Yuu argues. “No one knew when Kayama and I were hooking up.”

Nishiya groans. “Yes. We did.”

“I meant none of our fans!”

Nishiya opens his mouth, probably to argue even though Yuu knows he is not online enough to be aware of the conspiracy theory threads. Thankfully, he’s interrupted by Edgeshot saying, “I believe, if it is in Rei-san’s best interest, Takeyama will be able to keep quiet.”

Their words stun her into silence for a second, honestly. She wasn’t expecting such a vote of confidence. Her teammates might easily trust her with their lives on the battlefield, but when it comes to matters of their personal lives, neither Nishiya nor Edgeshot have ever been able to sympathize with Yuu’s far more extroverted personality and approach to living. Which doesn’t bother her—she’s got Kayama, Miruko, and Joke for stuff like that—but it does mean she tends to be the odd one out in situations like this.

“Thanks,” she mumbles, ducking her head as her face warms.

“Just make sure you think over what you’re getting into before you reach the point of no return,” Edgeshot advises. “Someone like Rei-san is going to come with her fair share of baggage, through no fault of her own.”

Yuu nods. “I know. But…” A wistful smile crosses her face. “She’s so kind despite all of that. So I’d like to get to know her better, at the very least.”

Nishiya and Edgeshot exchange a Look. Jeanist sighs at the sight.

“I’ve changed my mind,” Nishiya decides. “As long as you don’t immediately rub your success in Endeavor’s face, I will support you.”

“Well now I have to do that!”

Jeanist drops his face into his hands. “You sincerely do not.”

“But it would be funny! Maybe I should text the girls—”

That gets her a chorus of NO!s, which sends her into a fit of giggles. All of the earlier awkwardness has dissipated now, and honestly, Yuu is feeling better about everything herself, too. It really would’ve sucked if she lost some of her closest friends because they didn’t approve of her taste in women. And, okay, it’s obviously not going to be as easy as just asking her out and then happily ever after, but—

Yuu fought in a goddamn war. She can handle anything after that.

Much to Yuu’s surprise, Endeavor shows up at the hero gala.

He’s retired now, and still in a wheelchair as he recovers from his injuries—although, Yuu supposes the wheelchair might just be a permanent thing. She’s not really sure about the exact extent of his injuries, but considering he decided to retire over them, they must have been pretty severe.

Shouto stands at his side, a blank expression on his face right up until the moment he meets Yuu’s gaze. Then, his eyes widen and his mouth drops open slightly. He says something to his father, and the two of them immediately make a beeline for Yuu.

Obviously, Yuu panics.

“Hide me!” she hisses, ducking behind Miruko.

Miruko clicks her tongue, and then steps out of the way, because she’s a traitor. “You brought this upon yourself,” she admonishes. “You’re going to have to face it at some point.”

“But—!”

“Mount Lady,” Shouto says, coming to a stop across from her. Miruko nods to him and Endeavor, then winks at Yuu, and then hops away. What useless friends Yuu has. “I wanted to say hello to you, because my mother said the two of you have recently become…friends.”

“Oh! Yes, um. We have.” Yuu tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s nice to formally meet you, Shouto-kun. Your mother has told me very nice things about you.”

“She has said many good things about you, too,” he replies evenly. Yuu can’t tell if he’s trying to sus her out, or if he just acts like this all the time. Endeavor is offering no help in interpreting his son’s behavior either—he’s just glaring like he would rather be anywhere else in the world right now. Which is probably exactly how he feels.

Still, it would be rude for Yuu to ignore him, right?

“And, uh, hello to you too, Endeavor.”

He grunts. “So you’ve been speaking with Rei?”

Wow. Not even a ‘hi’ back. Alright, then.

“Yes,” Yuu responds, tone clipped. “She’s a lovely woman, and I hope I can offer her some happiness that she clearly wasn’t getting elsewhere.” She can hear both Nishiya and Jeanist’s voices in the back of her mind, scolding her and reminding her that she should not be picking fights like this, but neither of them are here right now. So. “Anyway, I fail to see how the people she chooses to interact with has any effect on you.”

“I suppose you’re right,” he concedes, and Yuu really doesn’t know what to do with that. She was expecting more of a fight—Endeavor has never been known for simply laying down and accepting defeat. After all, he was the only hero who ever even tried to usurp All Might’s number 1 ranking.

“Of course I am!” Yuu replies, a beat too late. She flips her hair for good measure, then turns her attention back to Shouto, who now has an amused twinkle in his eye.

“I think you will be good for my mother,” he decides with a nod. “You have my approval.”

Yuu grins.

Maybe having to attend this gala wasn’t so bad after all.

rei-san <3 (the milf™)

i met ur son and ur ex at the gala 11:12

Shouto mentioned they ran into you. 11:29

he actually specifically came over to talk to me 11:30

shouto, i mean 11:31

he dragged his dad with him but i’m p sure that man did notttt want to be anywhere near me lmao 11:31

anyway i like shouto-kun, he’s cool 11:32

your ex is a piece of work tho 11:32

sorry if that’s offensive 11:32

but like. gestures vaguely 11:32

I’m glad to hear you and Shouto got along. He seemed to have a positive reaction to you, and told me he thought it was good that the two of us met. 11:32

The topic of Enji is a difficult one for me to broach, but I appreciate you not walking on eggshells around me when speaking of it. 11:33

that totally makes sense!! i won’t ask you to talk abt him if you don’t want to obviously. but i also don’t want you to feel like you Can’t mention him since. yk. i’m already aware that you two were married and know abt all of that shitty media coverage after dabi’s vid 11:34

You’re very thoughtful, Yuu-chan. I believe Shouto was correct; it is a wonderful thing that the two of us met. 11:35

Yuu leaves work early on Tuesday, bidding a quick farewell to Nishiya, who simply lets out a resigned sigh as he waves her off. She rushes back to her apartment so she can change into something more date-appropriate, and proceeds to spend the next half hour anxiously awaiting Rei’s arrival. She checks over her appearance no less than six times, debating whether she should change outfits or tweak her makeup or style her hair differently. Should she try to make herself look older? Should she put on something more revealing? Should she FaceTime Kayama and beg for her advice?

She’s about to send a panicked text to her friends when the doorbell rings, cutting off that train of thought entirely.

She darts to the door, nearly tripping over her own feet in her haste to greet Rei. She practically throws the door open, and is met with the sight of Rei—holding a bouquet of flowers.

“Um,” all of the words Yuu knows seems to have fallen out of her brain. “Hi?”

Rei smiles warmly. “Good evening, Yuu-chan.” She holds the flowers out. “These are for you.”

A stilted, Oh, falls from Yuu’s lips. She stammers out a thanks as she accepts them—a lovely display of white and orange tied together with an indigo ribbon. “Let me find a vase for these real quick. You can come in!”

She steps out of the way, allowing Rei into the apartment. She shuts the door behind her, and trails after Yuu as she fetches a vase, then fills it with water. Yuu is grateful she had the foresight to tidy up a bit last night, because she imagines dirty dishes piled in the sink would be a major turn-off for someone as put-together as Rei.

She places the vase of flowers in the center of her table, then steps back to admire it.

“They’re beautiful, thank you!” Her gaze slides over to Rei. “Though, not nearly as beautiful as you.”

Rei ducks her head. “You do not need to flatter me.”

“I’m being serious!” Yuu insists. “You remind me of snow. Which is probably, like, super cliché since you literally have an ice quirk, but— You’re like the first snowfall of winter, early in the morning before anyone has had a chance to plow it away or dirty it.”

Rei frowns. She lifts one hand, her fingers idly tracing the burn scar across her face. “Really?” she questions.

“I have scars too, you know,” Yuu points out. “And you were the one who reminded me they aren’t a bad thing. Yours are just as much a symbol of your bravery as mine.”

Rei flushes, and Yuu relishes in the sight. “You’re very sweet. I don’t fret much over my appearance, but I must admit it feels nice to receive such a kind compliment—especially from you.”

Especially from me?” Yuu teases. “I’m honored.” She holds her arm out. “Shall we head out?”

Rei takes Yuu’s arm, and despite her cold appearance, her touch is warm. “Lead the way.”
