"So is that it, then? For your law career? You're giving up on it?" Kristoph couldn't hide the note of disapproval that was creeping into his voice. "On everything we planned? On us?" It wasn't how he had wanted this conversation to go, but he couldn't hold his feelings back.
"Kris, I don't have time for this right now," Klavier sighed. "I'll talk to you later, okay?" He hung up before Kristoph could respond, leaving him frustrated, staring in annoyance at the phone as though his brother would be able to see his glare from the other side of the world.
That afternoon, he booked a ticket to Berlin on an overnight flight.

Summary
On the appointed night, Jerry told Alec to get his coat on and come with him, in the tone that brooked no disagreement. Alec clearly knew something was afoot, wriggling impatiently in the cab on the way there, but he didn't ask too many questions, just clung to Jerry's hand as they rolled through the darkened streets. Jerry felt like he did before a big job - mentally running over every detail to make sure he knew the plan inside and out, while his brain hummed with anticipation.
Upon their arrival at the unmarked door, Alec gave him a look, but Jerry just said, "Upstairs." He led the way, with Alec following, looking around curiously as they entered the club. The room had the superficial appearance of a salon, with sofas and cushions and a warm carpet on the floor, but when one looked more carefully, details like the hooks planted in the ceiling beam and the coils of rope in the corner became more telling as to the nature of the activities that went on there.

It started because Jin Ling heard his uncles talking. He was too well brought-up to eavesdrop properly, so he only overheard a few words as he was passing by on his way to the training grounds at Lotus Pier.
"... he'll have to be paired off soon, in my opinion," Wei Wuxian was saying. Jin Ling didn't know who he was talking about, and didn't really care - Wei Wuxian's opinion was profoundly irrelevant to him on most matters.
"Mn," came a quiet grunt that indicated Lan Wangji was in the room as well. Jin Ling had somewhat more respect for Lan Wangji, except that his involvement with Wei Wuxian surely indicated some kind of perilous blemish on his otherwise flawless reputation and bearing. His presence didn't make this conversation any more informative, at any rate.
But when Jiang Cheng replied, saying, "He's still young, but I've already received three offers from other clans," Jin Ling slowed his steps slightly, because he realized they had to be talking about him.

It had been two weeks since the big showdown against the Saja Boys. Golden was at the top of the charts for the third consecutive week, and Bobby was overjoyed, booking the girls onto one public appearance after another to keep the hype up. Social media was going crazy too, although it was still a fair amount about the strange disappearance of the Saja Boys and how no one had heard from them since that concert after Huntrix broke up and then almost immediately got back together. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey were trying to put all of that behind them, hard as it was to go back to normal. The new Honmoon was strong, but it still needed to be reinforced, and they knew that if they led it slide, sooner or later demons would start slipping through again. Gwi-ma hadn't been defeated for good, just temporarily inconvenienced.

Nothing had gone the way Rumi imagined. What was supposed to be her triumphant return where she would reveal herself to everyone, reunite with Mira and Zoey, defeat the Saja Boys, and create a new Honmoon, had instead ended in disaster. Mira and Zoey hadn't come to her side the way she'd expected. Maybe the demons had overwhelmed them, or maybe they just hadn't cared enough to help her - she wasn't sure which option was worse. And when Gwi-Ma exploded in rage at her nevertheless daring to try and defeat him on her own, Rumi had been forced to cower back from the torrent of blue flame, trying to keep from being consumed, bracing her sword against the demonic energy, but knowing she couldn't hold it off for long...
Then suddenly Jinu was in front of her, blocking the worst of the blast. She looked up at him, thinking for a second that maybe he had come to help her, but his face was cold and impassive. She had never been reminded so clearly that he was dead, had been dead for hundreds of years. "Jinu," she said anyway, trying to plead with him, hoping that perhaps she could win him over.
"You want to survive?" he demanded, his voice low and icy. "Then follow my lead and do what I say."
