Work Text:
Eddie woke to find Steve's side of the bed cold - he'd told Steve it was his turn, that Steve needed to sleep and Eddie was just as capable of putting their little girl back to bed.
Their little girl. Some days Eddie still couldn't believe it - that he and Steve had built a life together. There'd been some rough spots the first few years, mainly Eddie's recovery from being almost killed by demo bats; turned out Steve was a universal donor and had given Eddie multiple blood infusions to save him.
And when Eddie'd finally woken up? Steve'd been right there holding his hand; and while helping Eddie recover, they'd also fostered and nurtured the growing attraction between the two of them. Friends to boyfriends to partners, it all followed so effortlessly.
Steve had gone to cosmetology school and found a salon to hire him. Eddie (after getting cleared of all charges and getting his GED) had worked to open his own comic book shop. They'd bought a small house in town - three bedrooms with a big backyard so they could still have the Party over.
It was so close to perfect.
Then Robin had shown up on their doorstep with an offer. Surrogacy. She's be Auntie Robin, would carry the baby for them and then would sign her parental rights away to Steve and Eddie.
There had been copious tears.
Robin had moved into their house during the pregnancy and Steve and Eddie made sure to dote on her and take care of her every need.
Ava Mackenzie arrived two weeks early on Halloween, with Robin's blonde hair and Eddie's curls. Robin stayed with them long enough to recover and make sure all the paperwork was settled before going back home.
Leaving Ava with Steve and Eddie.
Eddie smiled to himself as he padded to the nursery, standing in the doorway to watch Steve.
" … La-la-lu, la-la-luOh, my little star sweeperI'll sweep the stardust for youLa-la-lu, la-la-luLittle soft, fluffy sleeperHere comes a pink cloud for you …"
Steve sat in the rocker near the window, Ava wrapped in a soft pink blanket in his arms as he sang softly.
"Not Joni Mitchell?" Eddie asked softly.
"Not tonight." Steve stood and tucked Ava back into her crib. "I'll wait until she's at least 2 years old before introducing her to Joni."
Eddie watched as Steve watched Ava for a moment before joining Eddie in the doorway.
"You're a good Momma," Eddie teased, wrapping his arms around Steve and kissing him sweetly.
"I try," Steve whispered.
"You succeed," Eddie said. "I love you."
"Love you, too."
