Broken Prophecies

Summary:

Ever since he came into existence, Ralsei has been waiting for the heroes of the prophecy to appear. However, despite hoping and praying as hard as he did, nobody ever came.

Because Kris, Susie, and the Soul have never existed in the first place.

And yet even without them, the Prophecy marches onwards: broken and fragmented. And so it falls to the Prince from the Dark to stand where three once stood.

In the Light World above, in the bizarre place known as Hometown, a dark conspiracy heralds an all-consuming darkness. New heroes must step up to uncover what lurks in the shadows, before the Roaring brings about the end of both worlds.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

Disclaimer:

Just becuase the premise of the work doesn't involve Kris or Susie doesn't mean that I dislike either of them! I see this work as an opportunity to explore characters and their relationships without Kris and Susie, since they make up a majority of the relationships we see in the game. Things may start simple and loosely follow canon, but things will begin to rapidly spiral out of control. With that being said, I'd deeply appreciate it if you tuned in to see what happens!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

A frigid gale blows through an empty Castle Town tonight. Ralsei could never figure out where the wind comes from, but that doesn’t stop its violent and incessant howling amongst the cliffs and homes of this Dark World. The empty buildings below seem to sway back and forth in the breeze, their black windows reflecting blue light like glistening stars in the howling void below.

Ralsei doesn’t normally experience vertigo, but tonight was different. As he stands atop the railing on the highest balcony of the tallest tower of his castle, staring down at a sea of darkness before him–so high up that he could practically touch the stars in the sky–he begins to feel dizzy. He stands in tortured silence, the wind feverishly tugging at his dark cloak as if trying to pull him back down.

The events of the day race through his head endlessly; the words of others echo around his brain, repeating over and over and over again. He clenches his fists tightly to keep his mind here and now, his claws digging into his paws and drawing a slight amount of pitch-black ichor from his palms. He closes his eyes tight, trying to avoid looking down. However, he’s unable to help himself. Despite his brain screaming at his body not to do it, he forces his eyes open and stares down the drop from this balcony down to the dark depths of his demise below. He no longer has the energy to put on a brave facade as tears of hopelessness, apprehension and sorrow stream down his cheeks. A looming sense of doom hangs over his shoulders like a guillotine; the blade already falling towards his neck.

He closes his eyes once more, asking himself a single question with nothing but dread weighing on his mind as he spirals more and more into the depths of his despair.

'What hope do I have to do this alone?'

He ponders the question for a brief moment, weighing countless different possibilities in his mind. No scenario he could think of provides any kind of comfort. Without hope, he can only reach a single possible conclusion.

Closing his eyes even tighter, he leans forward with abandon, throwing himself from the top of the tower.

And so, the Prince from the Dark cast himself into oblivion, for without the heroes of the prophecy, he serves no purpose. Without the heroes of the prophecy, there was no hope for either world to survive what was to come.

Notes:

Hello everyone reading this!

I've been an author for over a decade at this point, though my main writing outlet has been my friend groups through Dungeons and Dragons and personal pieces that I've been too embarrassed to share with a single other soul. This is my first time really committing to a longform piece of literature and is only my second time uploading anyhting to AO3. Something about Deltarune has really given me the largest bolt of inspiration I've ever had, so I plan on seeing this through to the very end even if it kills me.

I have a few chapters ready to go already, after those are uploaded I plan on simply uploading as I go. The other chapters after this one will be way longer, this is just a cold opening for drama's sake!

Quick edit: I realized that I can link to the Fanfic Paradise discord server! It's a huge gathering spot for DR/UT authors and fanfiction and I post in there a lot X3 If you're curious and end up liking this fic, feel free to check it out!
