"Hmm." Interesting. Rocky was an old rock. Does that possibly make him an Eridian dilf?
___
“Rocky doesn't like me watching him eat,” I said. I already felt sorry for myself. I hadn't planned to mention Rocky at all. For approximately five minutes, I had been doing a magnificent job of not thinking about him.Aurora lowered the spoon. "Why? He doesn't want you around? Typical."
"Uh," I said. "He just finds reasons to do it somewhere else. Or waits until I'm busy. If I catch him, he gets weird. He says it's a highly private matter for an Eridian."
"I see." Aurora ate another bite with considerably more dignity than before. "Thing is. The feeding structures are the most vulnerable parts of our bodies. When they are exposed and our attention is divided, it's culturally understood as a moment of reduced strength."
"Oh." That was something new.
They continued. "So bonded partners often remain with each other during meals. We guard one another while eating. But this is not strictly between lovers. Before we find someone, we do the watching thing with our families or close friends... or in my sad case, an alien."
Aurora said this as if this were the most obvious arrangement in this universe, probably pleased with themselves because they finally out-lectured an alien. I looked down at my fingertips. Vengeance could wait.
Rocky always ate alone. Not completely alone. I was usually somewhere nearby, separated by a wall or a pile of lab equipment. On the Hail Mary, space had been limited so I had assumed that I was being considerate. But he had never asked me to stay or even told me more about it. I should've known and guarded him.
"Maybe he doesn't trust me," I said, closing my fingers around the glass just to find myself something to do.
Aurora studied me for a moment, then they made a disbelieving click. "Perhaps Rocky only wants to present the strong version of himself to you. He is, after all, you know, your overprotective sugar daddy."
