Work Text:
It had been two weeks since Superfish and DJ had last gathered ingredients for the strength potion, and Superfish wasn't any closer to finding where the next one could be. Despite not having much reason to stay by DJ's side while not actively hunting ingredients, Superfish stayed around DJ every day, even spending the night at his house a couple times.
The truth is whenever he was around DJ, he would sometimes get a strange feeling come over him. From a weird tightening in his chest to getting a nervous feeling in his stomach, something wasn't quite right. It would always come whenever DJ was actually being nice or helpful to him instead of screaming at him or rolling his eyes at one of his cocky remarks. It was especially strong whenever he would playfully tease Superfish about something. In a way though, the feeling was actually kind of nice. He couldn't explain it, but recently he actually kind of enjoyed being around DJ.
He isn't able to get sick, so it wasn't some human disease he contracted. Could it be a symptom connected to the magic burn he didn't know about? No, that wouldn't make much sense. It has to be related to the core, that's what he's doing all of this for, right?
Superfish went over to DJ’s house and knocked on the door. “Wow you finally learned to knock for once instead of just coming in as you please” DJ sneered. “What, you wouldn’t have been happy to see me if not?” Superfish said smugly. DJ rolled his eyes, “What do you want, Fishface?”
“I was wondering if you want to go grab some burgers, I’m really hungry!”
“And you couldn’t have done that without me, huh?”
“Well I figured I could be keeping an eye on the core if you came with me.”
“Right, right, the core. How about I just make some burgers at home instead? I’m a pretty good cook.”
“Well I suppose that would be alright.” Superfish hadn’t ever had DJ’s cooking before, so he was willing to give it a try. He slipped off his shoes and followed DJ to the kitchen.
DJ turned on the stove and gathered what he would need for the burgers. “What all do you like on your burger?” he asked Superfish, who was eating a donut he found in a box on the counter. “Seriously, you couldn’t wait for the food to get done?”
“I said I was really hungry!” Superfish exclaimed while still chewing. “Anyways, I like mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, onion, but no pickles, they taste too much like the shit I had to eat in Obscaria. For all our magical abilities and talents, witches don’t make very much food that tastes good.”
“From what you’ve told me it doesn’t sound like it”. DJ had always been curious as to what life was like in Obscaria, but Superfish would usually dodge the questions he asked. That only made him want to know more.
DJ had recently come to terms with the fact that he has feelings for Superfish. Not only was he very cute, but he could tell that beneath his self-absorbed exterior was someone truly genuine and caring. He’s also pretty sure Superfish likes him back, or at the very least does care about him as a friend. “For the core” my ass, he follows me around like a puppy!
“Is the food the reason you live in the human world now?” DJ probed. “I mean, you won’t tell me much about what life is like there, so are you just that addicted to human food?”
“Well, it certainly doesn’t make me want to go back.” Superfish replied. “Anyways, you know I don’t like to talk about it as much as I can help it. It’s not something humans need to worry about.”
“If I’ve got a witches' core inside me and said witch has been sending HITMEN after me I think I need to know a little!” DJ hissed, he hated when Superfish would diminish his questions as things humans didn’t need to know.
“Basically I just have some bad memories from there and I don’t care to go back, now can we please change the subject now?”
“Alright alright then! Well anyways I’m happy you live here now. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it’s actually been kinda fun hanging out and getting to know you over the past few weeks. I never actually believed in the supernatural until I met you, and it’s been so cool seeing real magic, especially from a witch as powerful as you!”
Superfish was taken aback by DJ’s flattery and he felt a strong tingling rush through his chest. There it goes again! Why do I feel this way when I’m around DJ? It can’t just be because of the core, can it? Why is he making me so nervous? Snap out of it, I have to keep it together!
“I-I um” Superfish struggled to put his words together “You know I’m only here for the core! I’m not gonna stay around once I get that back.”
DJ rolled his eyes, he can’t believe he’s still using that excuse. “Oh cut the crap Superfish, I know you won’t be able to stop coming around once you get the core back! It’s not hard to tell you really do care about me, or even the other members of the occult club for that matter.”
“A-And just what makes you think that? I was perfectly fine with how things were before we got into this mess, I’m ready for everything to go back to normal. It will be better for the both of us when it does.”
“Oh come on now, I’ve noticed how you’re always going out of your way for me. If this was all just ‘for the core’, you wouldn’t be giving me rides home after school, you wouldn’t be so invested in the occult club and with Eugene and Mandy’s competition, and you certainly wouldn’t be coming over here to ask me to get burgers with you, you’d go and do that by yourself! You're always looking for some way to be around me even when not necessary, so can you stop pretending you’re so indifferent to me?”
Superfish was dumbfounded that DJ had put this much thought into his actions. As much as he didn’t want what he said to be true, he knew that DJ was right that it was about more than just the core now. He really has enjoyed his company since looking for the core and has loved getting to know him and his friends. Even so, he didn’t want him to know that. What good would it do once he gets the core back and he leaves them? Could he really stay around after this is all over?
I can’t let DJ know how much he’s been on my mind lately, he’d no doubt think I’m weak for how much I’ve concerned myself with him. I kinda feel like I might… like him. No! I can’t have feelings for him, he’s a human! It wouldn’t be safe for me to like him!
“Look DJ, I’ll admit I have enjoyed some of our time together a little bit. It’s been nice to spend time with someone, it’s been lonely living by myself and not having any friends. Still though, it would be too dangerous to be friends with a human, and I can’t let myself get involved in the human world more than I already am. Once I’ve got the core, I’ll have to stop coming around. It would be too hard for me to explain why I can’t stay, so just trust me on this please!”
DJ decided it was time to tell Superfish how he felt about him. He couldn’t let him leave without knowing that although they may not be together for much longer, he has truly made him so happy in the short time they’ve known each other.
“Superfish, before this all comes to an end, I think I should tell you how I feel about you. Even though I haven’t known you for very long, I’ve realized that being with you has made me the happiest I’ve been in a long time. I can’t really explain it, but you drive me crazy in the best way possible! I know that beneath your cocky exterior, you really are a kind and compassionate person, I love how you light up every time I show or teach you a new thing about the human world, you constantly impress me with all the cool magic stuff you do, and on top of all that, you are so fucking attractive it hurts! You have the most gorgeous golden eyes and teal hair, and the absolute prettiest face I’ve ever seen, I could stare at it all day! What I’m saying is I like you a lot, Superfish, and I want nothing more than for you to stay with me for the rest of my life!”
DJ’s heartfelt confession had left Superfish starstruck and with his heart racing a mile a minute. There wasn’t any denying it anymore, Superfish was hopelessly in love with DJ and he wanted nothing more than to be with him forever.
“DJ, I-I just d-don’t know what to say!” Superfish said lying through his teeth. He knew exactly what he wanted to say, he felt the exact same way about him and didn’t want to leave him ever, but he was too scared to say it.
“If you’re still so insistent on leaving though, I remember you said you could wipe my memory after you get the core, so please do so. I don’t want to remember you if I can’t ever see you again, so make me forget any of this ever happened.”
“No!” Superfish wept. He couldn’t hold it back any longer, he had to tell DJ how he truly felt about him. “I-I won’t do it, I won’t leave you! I really like you too DJ, I’ve just been too scared to admit that to myself until just now. I never knew I could feel this strongly about someone until I met you, but I truly love everything about you. For the past few weeks, every time you’ve been nice to me or teased me or even just touched me, I’ve felt a weird tightness and tingling in my chest. I realize now it’s because I really do like you. I’ve never known much of any type of affection until I met you, and it’s the best feeling in the world! This wasn’t all just for the core and I didn’t really want to leave you, I’m just scared, okay? I’ve never liked anyone like this before, and there’s so much you don’t know about the witch world that makes me scared to like you, I just-”
DJ interrupted Superfish by pressing his lips against his. He put his hand on his back and gently drew him closer, feeling Superfish relax the tension in his back and lean into the kiss.
“Everything will be okay. I know there’s going to be problems we’ll face ahead, but it’s nothing we can’t handle. Besides, you are the strongest witch who ever lived, right?”
“Heh, you are right about that!” DJ knew just how to stroke Superfish’s ego and now he had him in the palm of his hand. Superfish grabbed DJ and pulled him in for another kiss, this one much better than the one before. He ran his hand through DJ’s soft black hair and pressed their lips together even harder than before. DJ slipped his hand inside Superfish’s shirt, caressing his soft skin up and down his back. Their heart rates climbed as their tongues slid into the other’s mouth. Superfish got so excited he accidentally levitated the both of them off the ground.
“Whoa hang on!” DJ exclaimed as they quickly fell back to the ground.
“Sorry, guess I got a little carried away!”
“It’s alright, we’re gonna have to try that again when I’m prepared!”
A few minutes later the burgers were done. Superfish took a bite into his and had a visceral reaction. “Oh my!” Superfish gushed, mouth still full. “This is the best burger I’ve ever tasted!”
“Well being my boyfriend would mean you’d get a lot more of those plus getting to try many other tasty human foods I’m sure you’ll love. Like I said, I’m a very good cook!”
“Sounds like a deal!”
