Lily: You don't need to worry about me
Jane: I always worry about you.
Jane: Where are you now?
Lily: Just got on charter bus
Lily: We emergency landed in swamp outside Orlando
Lily: I asked if there were alligators but "that's an inappropriate question given the circumstances"
Jane: Was it actually a swamp or just a floridian field?
Lily: Basically a swamp
Jane: So a field.
Lily: There were not alligators, if that's how you define swamp
Jane: Field
Jane: You're bussing to Miami tonight?
Lily: I always get yelled at when I say Miami
Lily: "It's south florida!"
Lily: But yes

Today 3:48 AM
Harris: Jane?
Jane: Who is this?
Harris: This is Harris, the Centaur's social media manager.
Jane: Why do you have Ilya's phone?
Harris: Ilya is in the hospital. He hit his head pretty hard and had internal bleeding the EMTs didn’t notice. He passed out on the bus and was rushed to the hospital and into surgery. They successfully stopped the bleed, but are keeping him asleep until the swelling in his brain goes down.
Jane: He's
Jane: Hospital
Jane: Surgery
Jane: Brain bleed
Jane: Okay?
Jane: Coma?
Jane: Alive?
Harris: He's in a medically induced coma, yes. The doctors estimated 12 to 24 hours before the swelling goes down enough to wake him up. They were confident he will wake up and will be okay.
Jane: How do they know
Jane: How
Jane: Where are you
Harris: Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, FL
Jane: Is that a good enough hospital
Jane: Does he need to transfer somewhere better
Jane: He should be somewhere better than that
Harris: He's getting great care here.
Jane: How do you know
Jane: How
Jane: It could be better
Harris: Jane. Breathe.
Jane: Could it be better
Harris: I'm going to call you from my phone.
~~~~~~
missed call from an unknown number
~~~~~~
Today 4:17 AM
Harris: Jane, this is Harris. Ilya is getting fantastic care here. I promise. I understand if you don't want to talk on the phone, but I'm here if you need me. I will keep you updated.
Jane: Who's with him
Harris: Coach Wiebe and myself. The rest of the team went on to South Florida.

Shane: Mom
Mom: Shane, it's four in the morning. What's the emergency?
Shane: Ilya
Shane: Is in a coma
Shane: He's ok apparently they say but comma is not okay
Shane: Coma!
Shane: Plane crash
Shane: Brain bleed
Shane: He said he was ok but then now comma
Shane: Coma
Shane: I need to get to Florida
Shane: Some tiny ass hospital in a swap
Shane: Swamp
Shane: How do I get to FL
Mom: I'm calling you.
~~~~~~
Today 2:49 PM
Shane: Are you still with him
Harris: I'm in the cafeteria right now. Coach Wiebe is with him.
Shane: Come to the parking lot by the emergency room entrance
Harris: Are you here?
Shane: Sort of
Harris: Sort of?
Shane: Come out here
~~~~~~
Today 4:32 PM
Shane: Made it
Mom: Any issues?
Shane: Not really
Shane: Harris was surprised but chill, like you said he'd be
Shane: Coach just nodded at me and walked out of the room so that was weird
Shane: Told the nurse I was family but didn't say family how and she didn't ask
Mom: How is he?
Shane: Asleep
Shane: Pale
Shane: It's weird
Shane: Wires everywhere
Shane: I had this vision of him being awake when I walked in and even though I knew he was asleep I was shocked somehow when he was
Mom: Any updates from the doctor?
Shane: The swellings going down but not very fast. Originally 12 to 24 hours and now they’re saying “at least” 24
Shane: It's been 19
Mom: And how are you?
Shane: I don't know
Shane: Does that matter
Mom: Of course it matters.
Shane: Not as much tho
Mom: Shane.
Shane: Idk I'm fine I guess?
Shane: Tired
Shane: Anxious
Mom: Try to sleep?
Shane: Idk if I can
Mom: It's worth trying. Rest while he's resting.
Shane: He's not...
Mom: He is, Shane. He’s just resting. Giving his brain a chance to calm down and he’ll wake up like nothing ever happened.
Shane: You don't know that
Mom: That's what the doctors said, right?
Shane: I guess
Shane: "At least"
Shane: They said "at least"
~~~~~~
Nurse: Shane? We’re going to try and wake him up now.
Shane, groggy: Try?
Nurse: The swelling in his brain has gone down enough that we’re taking him off the meds that are keeping him asleep. It’s up to him to wake up. Could be as little as a few minutes, or he might need a bit longer.
Shane: And if it’s longer? That’s bad?
Nurse: Not necessarily. Everybody is different and different doesn’t mean bad.
Shane, mumbling: It seems bad.
~~seven impossibly, torturously long minutes later~~
Shane: Ilya? Ilya can you hear me?
Ilya: Shane? What are you doing here?
Shane: I had to be here.
Ilya: Where is here?
Shane: You’re in the hospital. In Florida. You hit your head.
Ilya: It was just a bump. They said…
Shane: They were wrong. There was a bleed. You…
Doctor: Mr. Rozanov, it’s good to see you awake.
Ilya: Awake? How long…
Doctor: It’s Thursday morning. You were asleep for about 34 hours.
Ilya: 34… hours… Shane?
Shane: I’m here.
Doctor: Let me check a few things, Mr. Rozanov.
Ilya: Shane?
Shane: I’m here. Let the doctor do what he needs to.
~~~~~
Ilya: Why did you come?
Shane: I couldn’t… I couldn’t stand the thought of not being here.
Ilya: People will know.
Shane: I don’t care.
Ilya: You—
Shane: I don’t. If you had… If you had died and I hadn’t… been there…
Ilya: Shane…
Shane: … hadn’t been allowed to mourn you? I would have died, Ilya. Maybe not literally, but in a very real way it would kill me, every single day.
Ilya, reaching: Shane.
Shane, grasping: I love you, Ilya.
Ilya: I love you too, moy lyubimiy.
Shane: I don’t care who knows.
Ilya: Everyone should know.
