Summary
In the early days of Qifrey, Alaira, and Olruggio's lives as full witches their peace in the Great Hall is broken with fear and mystery when it becomes apparent a killer with a taste for forbidden magic is in their midst.
For Qifrey coming into adulthood, into his identity, and moving through the world is hard enough without needing to prove his innocence. He’s desperate to keep his head above water but cannot see the bottom. His footing is unsteady, and as a result he has been taking matters into his own hands in an attempt to find agency.
And Olruggio knows his oldest friend is hiding something. It’s big, whatever it is. But he also knows Qifrey’s heart - or at least, he used to - and when he comes to Qifrey’s defense he can’t help but selfishly hope what lies in that heart is a mirror of what lives in his own.
Alaira is navigating uncharted territory, annoyed and feeling tedious about the shifting landscape of their long-standing relationships. A confluence of events personal and public sweep her into the depths of the mysteries embroiling them all. She is driven to discover how deep this chasm lies.
