    Summary

The luggage was wrong. There was too much of it and the shapes were strange. One of the unfamiliar shapes was not luggage at all.

It was a boy, standing slightly apart from everything.

He was perhaps Shane’s age, perhaps older — it was difficult to say. Something about him resisted easy assessment. He was light-haired and tanned like someone who might be familiar with labor outdoors. He was dressed in rags that may have been clothes once but were now simply panes of fabric that told of a long journey. He stood with his arms at his sides. Not quite cowering. He was looking around the foyer with the wide eyes of someone encountering a building for the first time in his life.

The boy’s eyes moved up the staircase.

They went directly to Shane, despite the dark.
