Work Text:
The spotlight falls onto Yellow. He raises his gun with one hand and tips his cowboy hat with the other.
“Seems it’s just you n me. Looks like ise’ll just have tew..”
he pauses lowering the gun a little, looking at blue a little uncomfortable. Blue looks at Yellow raising his palm a little signaling him to keep going. Yellow leaves his widened stance and lowers the gun completely.
“blue I don’t think I can do this…”
Yellow says grabbing his hat and holding it to his chest looking away in shame. Blue comes closer to blue, the spotlight moving with every graceful step he takes. He reaches out and holds yellows face, gently guiding Yellow to face him.
“that’s totally fine my dear. But, If I may inquire, whatever is the matter?”
Yellow glances away for a moment gripping his hat tightly before letting out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
“I really do appreciate yew lettin me into yer play en all... n goush do I feel bad for saying this… but I just don’t think I can do it. Be the bad guy even if its pretend. It just doesn’t feel right to say those things...”
he says with furrowed brows looking at blue, he expects some kind of disappointment or sadness at his inability to do the simple act of talking. He finds nothing but understanding on blues face. Blue smiles softly looking at yellows face, they’re so close he can feel yellows breath. He closes that gap for a moment, pulling yellow into a kiss. Yellow freezes for a moment, the feeling of blues lips to his causing him to short circuit; but as soon as he snaps out of it, he’s quick to reciprocate. He slowly walks into blue pushing the two out the blinding spotlights, leaving his hat on the ground. After a few moments blue pulls away and yellow gasps for air, so caught up in the kiss he forgot to breathe out his nose. Blue chuckles softly at yellow and his foolish little act.
“yellow, fret not about the role. If its not within your heart’s desire, who am I to make you do it? But if you’d like to bear with me, I’d love to have you for this act. I have a lovely idea for a compromise.”
blue says looking up at yellow. Yellow stares at blue for longer than he intending, he suddenly realizes how rude he was being. He jolts accidently breaking out from blues arms his face turning a peachy shade.
“of corse I’d love to! Any idea of yers wood be better than even my best one!”
He exclaims pulling on his shirt collar, it suddenly feeling strangling. Blue smiles and grabs yellows hands. He leads him backstage, setting him down on the couch blue pulls out the script. He grabs a white pen and starts marking out yellows dialog. Yellow watches intently as the ballerino marks out the letters. Despite them just being marks on a piece of paper it pulls yellow into a sense of ease, just the thought of being so dastardly even if his character ends up good in end, even though its all pretend just the idea of going against what feels like his whole propose caused a sense of worry to build in him. After a few minutes of silence broken up by the sounds of blue picking up a different pen and setting it back down to cross more things out he presents yellow with the new script.
“I thought if you didn’t want to talk, your character wouldn’t need to”
blue says smiling as yellow starts reading over the script. Yellow looks over blues new writing, his hand writing is so perfect. The words on the page are just so perfect. Blues just so perfect.
“Perfect….”
yellow mutters unable to say anything closer to what it really is. He stands up and reaches for his hat which isn’t on his head anymore. Blue smiles at yellow and turns back to the stage and leaves for it.
“then let’s get to it.”
they go back to their practice. Everything playing out as it did before but yellow has nothing to say. Back at that same scene, yellow widens his stance pulling down a hat that still isn’t there and lifts up his gun.
“oh but cowboy I'm on your side!”
Blue says putting the back of his hand to his forehead with dramatic flair. Yellow has his face to that audience that’s yet to dawn the seat. He looks back at blue and fixes his stance closing his eyes.
“if yer so sure that yer with me, then prove it lil darlin’.”
Yellow says going back to the original script holding his gun tightly. Blue doesn’t react to the changes simply going along with it.
“and prove I shall! I-“
*bang*
Yellows finger slips on the gun. He swore he had emptied the gun just in case he messed up like he normally does. Realization doesn’t hit him until blue drops to his knees holding his bleeding ear, one hand over his mouth to stop him from screaming. It doesn’t hit yellow slowly, it doesn’t ease its way it, it hits him all at once, it hits him so hard he can’t breathe. Yellow snaps his eyes open and stares at blue, frozen in terror and desperately trying to catch his breath he watches as blue shakes gripping his bleeding ear and digging his fingers into his jaw trying his hardest to cry out in pain.
Yellow rushes over the blue, a cold sweat on his forehead as he tries to see what he did. He sets his hand on blues. Blue moves his hand just enough for yellow to see the bullet wound. Yellow backs up for a reason he doesn’t really understand, he takes a few steps backwards keeping eye-contact with blue even with his vision blurring. Before he knows it, he’s running off the stage, before he can get any further than a few steps the hat that had fallen off his head is under his feet and yellow falls. Slamming his head on one of the set props he lays limp and unconscious. Blue looks up at yellow taking his hand off his mouth and slowly approaches yellow.
Before blue can reach out the spotlight shut off and follow someone walking in.
“so! How’s the two lovebirds doing?”
flowery says walking in holding his jacket over his shoulder, eyes closed excepting the ordinary sight. Just yellow and blue doing their little practice, love in the air. He opens his eyes and is met with a sight completely out of the ordinary. Blue bleeding, next to yellows limp body on the ground.
“Holy gloriosa! What the hell happened in here?!”
He said while making no haste to pick up blue and yellow. He has blue hold him from the back while holding yellow in the bridal carry. He rushes off the stage and through the castle until he reaches blues room. Blue stays silent, peering over Flowery’s shoulder and staring at yellows face. Even out the realm of consciousness his expression is troubled. He wishes to reach and hold yellows face but flowery being in the way and the face he has to keep his hand over his ear to stop from covering the ground in deep indigo blood. Flowery throws yellow onto blues bed, his body sinking a little into the satin and silk of blues rather regal looking bed. He sets blue down and starts looking at the wound with concern on his face.
A few hours later yellow begins to wake. As soon as he starts to stir, he forces himself up before he can open his eyes. He stays there holding himself up with his arms trying to open his eyes. He sits up and looks around, the walls adorned with baby blue ribbons. A small closet near the door and a large vanity set beside it. Everything just fits so well together, it’s no surprise for something like this to come from blue.
Oh blue.. what happened to him..?
As soon as that thought comes to him, he jolts and jumps off the bed pulling the blanket off with him. He tries to do more but it hit with a sudden dizzy spell and intense pain in the back of his head. He sits back down holding the back of his head with one hand and his forehead with the other, his head suddenly feeling way too heavy for his neck. He sits there trying to get his head to stop spinning. He’s broken away from it after feeling a cold touch on his shoulder. He looks over at the source of the touch as fast as he can without hurting himself further. Blue. His hand on yellows shoulder. That same always forgiving, always caring look on his face.
For once it feels more like poison rotting him from the inside, traveling up his spine and through his arms like a burning flame. Blue sits on the bed next to yellow hand still on yellows shoulder. They just stare at each other for a few moments. Yellow looks all over blues face until it lands on his ear, some kind of cotton looking thing stuck to where the bullet had torn. Blue slowly moves his hand down to yellow back, making small circles.
“it’s ok Yellow... you don’t need to say anything darling.”
Yellow looks at the ground, moving his fingers to try and brush against the hat that would normally be in his hands, he can just barely feel it there but it’s not there. Still scratching at the nonexistent hat blue grabs yellows hand with one of his own. Gently rubbing his thumb other them.
“It’s ok.”
Blue is rarely a man of few words. Even so all it was all yellow needed to hear. He leans to side and rests his head on blues shoulder.
“ise still so sorry.. I didn’t mean to be a criminell for real.”
he said slowly leaning out from blues comfort almost as quickly as he leaned in, unable to just accept blues forgiveness.
“gorsh you even rewritted it just so I didn’t have to be bad!”
He says holding back tears. His hands shaking in blues, his vision starting the swim.
“I thought I’d already emptyed my gun..!”
he stays his voice cracking. Blue looks at yellows trembling figure, his ear still throbbing from the damage it took. He lets go of yellows hands and wraps his arms around yellow. Yellow just stays with his arms down for a moment trying so hard not the break down but he can’t help himself. He wraps his arms around blue as tightly as he can like blue could disappear in his arms at any moment, then he just starts sobbing into the crook of blues neck muttering weak ‘sorries’ between choked out gasps.
Blue tries to look down at yellow without moving his head but he can’t see much. He’s never seen yellow so… distraught over something he’s done. Normally it’s met with brief disappointment then an attempt at what he considers a “punishment” so convinced that the cowboy shows he sees are so true to how a life works.
‘if I'm still good then it’ll not ‘kill’ me!’
He would say not fully grasping that the characters he saw in Asgores shows weren’t real, not really grasping the concept of death. But who is he to judge. He’s not a man to say he’s dealt with death in any form. He’s not even a man at all so what can he say other then what he feels in his heart? He holds the back of yellows head not realizing it hurts him. Yellow lets out a small wince at blues touch. Blue quickly removes his hand then lifts up yellows face. He looks carefully at yellows reddened tear-streaked face, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his dress. He looks at yellow’s eyes, one pupil is larger than the other. He frowns at that sight; he doesn’t know if it means anything but he doesn’t think it means anything good. He brushes away the fallen hairs off yellows forehead and looks at yellow intently.
“Yellow. How are you feeling right now?”
blue says worried for yellows safety. Yellow looks away, then back at blue then just around the entire area. The grip holding his hands together around blue weakens.
“not ex-actally the best”
He said almost ashamed, drawing the attention away from the horrible crime he committed.
--
The exchange goes on for a while, blue seeming the have all the right words to yellows confused rambling and repeated apologizes. After a few hours of just talking blue lays beside yellow his arms wrapped around the taller but skinner cowboy sleeping comfortably. Yellow lays there wide awake, he feels safe and ok but a gnawing feeling still latches to him despite blues attempts to make him feel better.
“you wan’ted to do it”
“you should have checked. Been safer.”
“he’s just pitying you. As soon as you’re alright he’ll hate you”
“you’re not justice. You’re not even close to a cowboy.”
Those are the only thoughts are the only ones that circle through yellows troubled head. He stares at the door, even closed light peaks through the darkened room. Yellow slowly eases out of blues arms trying his ‘darn hardest’ to not wake up the peaceful ballerino. He rolls off the bed with a hollow thud, pain shoots through his still aching head but he dares not make a sound. He grabs his cowboy boots and takes them with him out blues room. He steps into them not bothering to pull them up so they fit. He walks slowly through the field. The night sky shining down on him as the scenery. Everything basked in the blue color, God he sees blue in everything. He closes his eyes and his legs buckle for a moment but he forces himself out of it. It’s a slow uphill battle to the stage, while stumbling at some point he lost his boots leaving his feet exposed to the cold of the night.
He stares at the stage, it’s still lit. his guns still there and the bloody spots on the floor has yet to be cleaned. He steps onto the stage; the two lights merge together and shine right on yellow. The once wonderful light that he shared with blue not a blinding painful beacon. He slowly moves forward past the stage set that he hit causing all the pain he’s in, then he grabs his hat. Then he leaves going back to blues room. He trips a few times, each step getting harder causing more pain in his head.
“The hat fer my last resting place’’
Yellow thinks to himself gripping his hat. He vaguely remembers seeing that in Asgores old cowboy movies. He hopes blue will understand what it means when he wakes up and Is left with yellows hat, and not bother looking. The picture of blue waking up, confused at where yellow is, looking down at the hat and then rolling over uncaring; plays in yellows mind a few more times than he’d ever admit. Then again would blue know what It means? He can’t remember if blue watched all those cowboy shows and movies from Asgore’s vhs tapes with him.
“gawd what a stupid pardner, can’t even remember what he did with you”
He scratches his head, blues door coming into view in the darkness of the grassy field. He should remember that, it’s out of character for him to forget things about blue. He walks into the already opened door, not questioning why he left it in. he walks up the blue, he sleeps so pretty. Everything’s just so perfect about him it makes it hard for yellow to breathe. He gently sets his hat right where he had his head then leans over to give blue one last kiss goodbye; but he stops, what if he wakes blue up? Guilt claws at him as he decides it’s just barely too risky. He slowly exits the room, clicking the door shut.
After what feels like an hour of more walking, he finds himself in the empty diner. He sits down on one of the seats for a moment, holding his head as it pounds. He takes in a few sharp breaths; he sits longer than he wants to; just picturing himself getting up trying to convince himself to get up. He forces himself up stumbling forward so a moment before going inside the kitchen. He grabs one of the large knifes. He holds it for a minute, picturing the yellow color of his insides leaking out onto any possible surface. He sets the knife down.
“it wouldn’t be fair to put em through that”
Yellow said picturing green having to clean it themselves. He looks over at the stovetop, the same problem arises. He leaves the diner making his way to the mountain tops. One step after the other each one taking a toll on yellows weakened body. Each one reminding him of other things he’s done. It’s a wonder none of his punishments killed him, given he’s not the good guy en all.
He sits down on the edge of the cliffside. Yellow gazes down at the ever-expanding plants taking over the bellow, the thick and wild life looking so free. So, calling, he can basically hear it calling his name.
“yellow”
He leans forward a little at the sound
“yellow”
It calls out again.
Yellow leans forward even more until he slips off.
“Yellow!”
It calls out once more and he’s pulled up, preventing an untimely departure. He looks up at whatever grabbed him. Flowery, looks back down at yellow concerned to say the very least. Flowery looks at yellows odd expression, the weird pupils, the cold sweat and the overall dazed look to him.
“Wow, you’re really out of it after hitting your head. Aren’t you, yellow?”
flowery asks concern evident in his tone even if he still has the same arrogant tone.
“I mean a lil’, nothing to worry about though... I was just gettin some fresh air is all. Helps me sleep”
flowery let’s go of yellows shirt and pats him on the back.
“Well seems like it did you some good, almost knocked you out!”
flowery says with a smile. Yellow only nods at that, digging into the ground with his nails.
“I think I'm gonna stay out here for just a little longer. Thanks for showing up though”
Flowery smirks and points at himself.
“sounds good! But if you’re having any trouble just leaf it to me!”
he said before walking away, on hand in his pocket. Yellow watches flowery walk away with a soft smile before moving towards the edge and falling. Time seems to slow down as he falls. Using the limited time he has he thinks. The only thing coming to mind is blue. His mind wanders to his other friends but in what seems like the end his thoughts are guided back to blue. He opens his eyes feeling the air blow against him. Right as he thinks it’s over what seems like a hundred butterflies burst out his back and he sprouts wings almost identical to the ones blue has. He thought they were just a prop but it seems that they’re a life saver. He floats down to the ground before instantly throwing up. He holds his temples as he expels his stomach contents onto the wild growing grass. He spits and chokes before wiping his tongue with his sleeve. Unable to do much more he scooches away from the vomit and lays down on the grass. It’s grown so tall that with his head on the ground its taller than his head. He looks up at the night sky as the last few yellow butterflies fly away. He closes his eyes for a moment resting his clasped hands on his chest. He lets out a small sigh as tears fall from his shut eyes.
“you failed to do something so simple”
That same voice in his head utters to him. He taps the side of his head not really thinking about it sending a shoot pain through his head. He hisses in pain and grabs the sides of his head, his ears ringing. He opens his eyes for a second his vision blurring and spinning, and before he knows it he’s out cold again.
An amount of time passed that nobody but the ground he laid on and the moon that illuminated the grounds will ever know. Yellows eyes open as the sun begins to rise, an almost purplish yellow light fades in on the landscape. Yellow stands up slowly coming to process his surroundings. The first thought that comes to his mind is the dew on his clothes from the tall grasses. While thinking about that he gets an idea. He grabs onto one of the rocks of the cliff and starts climbing. It’s a struggle but the twisted motivation of getting what he deserves keeps him going. He grips the ground and pulls himself up using his heel to dig into the dirt and get himself all the way up. He pants for a second letting the sharp air cut into his lungs. He stands up and starts going to his room. As he goes, he sees the other flowers just existing. So carefree and happy, like him. He thinks about them as he heads to his room, hoping they won’t miss him too hardly. Aqua runs up to him and tries to talk to him but its silence to his ringing ears. He walks past her and walks into his room closing the door behind him.
Meanwhile, blue stirs from his deep sleep, he looks down at where he remembers where yellow was. When he finds nothing, he assumes yellow already got up and left to go do his normal activities, until he looks down at yellows hat. He jumps up grabbing yellows hat, he grips it tightly knowing what it means. He rushes out his room a few blue butterflies coming out with him as he sprouts wings and starts gliding around the area trying to find any signs of where yellow wandered to. He grips the hat like its yellow’s lifeline, his eyes desperately scanning the area.
“where is he? Could he have already done it?”
He starts flying faster and lands on the bar of the diner sliding a little from how fast he came in. he looks in the kitchen, nothing. Before he can leave green appears holding a sign.
“what are you doing”
Blue looks at the sign then at green.
“I'm looking for yellow before he does something truly stupid.”
blue says worried. He takes the time to glance around the kitchen, maybe see something he hasn’t already.
“Have you seen him?”
blues met with green shaking their head. He signs and nods muttering a small thanks for helping out a little before flying up and continuing the search. Before he flies too far away, he comes back with an idea.
“actually you think you could help me out with something? Yellow seems really out of it after he hit his head... you think you could maybe cook something for him while I find him?”
they nod at blues request before he wraps the string of yellows cowboy hat around his chest and over his shoulder and flies away once more. He continues searching until he finds a few yellow butterflies near a cliff. He almost plummets to the ground from the dread suddenly beating him down. He lands by the cliff edge; he quickly notices the markings from someone gripping and clawing at it. Anxiety builds as he steps closer the edge, he peers over and in a bit of momentary relief hits him as yellows dead body isn’t to be found. He walks away and leans over a butterfly, extending his index finger the butter-colored bug climbs onto it. A massive blue monarch butterfly forms over his face.
“excuse me, I don’t mean to disturb you. I was just wondering if you’ve seen a cowboy around here.”
he says to the butterfly. Before he can ask more, it starts flying south. Blue follows the bug; it doesn’t take long for him be in a full sprint. Each step careful over the plant covered ground, the determination to find yellow safe carries him weightlessly across the grasses. The butterfly leads him into the castle before flying onto a flower; seeming finished with its task. The butterfly on blues face disappears and becomes the wings on his back that he uses to search, praying that he’ll find yellow intime.
In his room he sits near the edge of the water, his legs plunged in the cold. He looks over at the clothes he left in the sand, every but his boxers folded up and set carefully down.
“might as well’ giv-em something nice to burry me in”
He thinks to himself slowly moving his legs back and forth in the water, his ankles tied together by a lasso he never really uses. He brushes his hands against the sand his mind going back to what he did to blue.
“Would he really want this...?”
He thinks starting to doubt his decision. Before he can further on it the image of blue kneeling on the stage gripping his injured ear, something that would have never happened if he was careful. He looks down at his reflection his head still throbbing. Looking back at him his reflection distorting slightly from the subtle movement of the water. Despite nothing different with the reflection all yellow sees is a horrible awful person. He grips the edge of the sandy ground before pushing himself into the water. The cold envelopes his entire body. Yellow expected to just sink and disappear but he finds himself desperately clawing at the water trying to force himself up, he squints the slightly sandy water burning his eyes. He instinctively lets out the air he was holding to try and scream but the cold unforgiving water swallows up the cries for help. The rock stuck to his ankles with the lasso slowly drags him down into the depths. He never really thought so hard about how deep the water went, but now as he keeps sinking, he doesn’t have the time to; his mind focused on the other flowers.
“This was a mistake…why am I doing this?”
he thinks to himself as the light from above the water starts to fade, whether because he’s getting so deep it’s no longer reaching with the same intensity or maybe it’s because he can barely keep his eyes open. Yellow stops struggling, the water feeling his lungs making it unbearable to keep fighting it.
Blue walks into the sandy room, he freezes in horror at the sight of yellows clothes on the sand. Without a second thought he runs over to the edge and dives into the water. He cuts through the water like butter, legs strengthened from dancing propelling him much faster than yellow sinks.
To yellow it looks like a dream; someone coming out of nowhere to save the day.
To blue on the other hand, it looks like a nightmare. It’s just so, horrid to see yellow like this. It feels wrong, it looks so wrong, it just is wrong. He reaches out his hand and grabs yellow. He starts swimming upwards easily able to make his up with yellow, and the rock tied to the poor cowboy.
On the surface everything looks so peaceful. The plant life around the body of water enveloping the room in a pinkish green sanctuary. Under the calm water and what the room is used for though; it’s almost funny how ironic it all is.
blue throws himself onto the sand along with yellow. He doesn’t waste any time to catch his breath and starts pumping on yellows chest. He’s not sure how many times he's meant to do it or how fast but he just hopes he’s doing it right. He holds Yellows nose and breathes into his slightly parted lips before going back pumping. Every time he repeats the process, he grows more and more desperate. After what feels like forever yellow starts coughing, blue turns yellow on his side letting the water spill out his mouth. He keeps coughing for a few minutes as blue carefully holds yellows sandy and shaky body. Blue carefully brushes a few wet hairs off yellows forehead as he coughs so hard his entire body jolts. Blue just looks down with concern, praying to whoever’s out there to ensure yellows safety.
Yellow looks up at blue eyes squinted. ‘Gorsh’, blue looks like an angel. The lights coming from a source he’s never found hitting blue so perfectly, the water glistening on him in a way that makes him look like he’s glowing. Positioned so perfectly by coincidence that the light isn’t in yellows eyes. He uses the little strength he has to reach for blues hand, blue instantly holds it in his own.
yellow tries to apologize but nothing comes out; blue quietly shushes yellow, holding him a little tighter.
“don’t say anything yet, alright? Our upmost priority is you being ok. Do not fret on what you cannot say right now, I know what you’re going to say and you have no reason to be saying those things.”
Blue says rubbing his thumb over yellows hand just as he did when they last were so close to each other.
Breaking up the moment they had Seth enters the room.
“yellow, I misplaced one of my books have you seen it?”
They say forcing the door with their shoulder, they stop in their tracks seeing a sight like…That...
“I’ll look later.”
they say about to leave but blue stops them.
“Seth, can you be a dear and fetch flowery for me? Its somewhat of an urgent matter”
Seth simply nods before leaving. Blue turns his attention back to yellow, whose shaking quite hard; what he fails to notice is he’s shaking all the same. Within what feels like under a minute flowery bursts through the door sparkles falling out from where he hit it.
“I heard from Seth you two are in need of a hand!”
Flowery exclaims looking down. He puts his arms down which were up for some pose he’d seen off the tv. He just stares awkwardly for a moment before picking the two of them up just like the day before.
“welp no need to dwell on it all!”
he exclaims before taking the two back to blues room once again. He sets the two on blues bed pulling a towel from what seems midair and throwing it on the two of them, when he pulled it out it looked quite small but now its big enough for the two of them.
“So, you need me to stay or you need me to leave?”
he said bouncing on his heels pointing from blue to the door left open. Blue notices Flowery’s, awkwardness to the situation this time and sighs softly.
“you may go if you desire.”
flowery quickly starts leaving, explaining himself a little as he leaves.
“thanks blue, I can hear Asgore at the diner ™ and I’ve got a plan to execute as you know!”
blue nods softly at Flowery’s words. The door closes and a soft blue light envelopes the room. To yellows confusion there are suddenly a lot more butter flies then he remembers, he remembers none.
“since when id’ these get ere?” he said a butterfly landing on his shoulder.
blue glances at yellow concerned. Resting his hand on yellows other shoulder and using the other hand to make yellow look him in the eyes.
“dear, they were always here. I'm afraid hitting your head might have had more effects then I had initially realized. Oh yellow I'm so sorry I didn’t notice.”
blue apologetic words ring through yellows head for a moment. He frowns slightly starting to shake his head as talks.
“blue don’t go on en say that. I should be the one apologizin. I should have been more carful, I should have checked twice. No I should have checked three times! Blue as soon as we’s dry I promise I’ll show you how sorrie I am’”
yellow said rambling a little his speech ever slightly slurred. Before yellow can continue blue shuts him up with a kiss. He holds yellow In the kiss for a few moments before pulling away slowly.
“yellow, that’s not happening my love. What's going to happen is I'm going to show you how much I forgive you already.”
blue says pulling yellows hat off of him and setting it on yellows head. Yellow looks down as the hats being placed on him before looking back up, his face a slight peach color.
“but before that happens, you’re getting dry and getting rest. There will be no arguments this time. You got it?”
Yellow nods fidgeting with him fingers. Blue pulls the towel off the two of them and starts drying yellow off.
“blue,”
yellow starts looking up at the utter beauty that is blue.
“have I ever told you how perfect and amazing you are?”
blue smiles softly at that.
“you have, but I think its my turn this time.”
he says leaning in for one last kiss.
