    It was the emptiness that had struck Wilbur.

    Out of all the things associated with the apocalypse, it had been that. Not the violence—Wilbur had found that when it came down to it, most people turned and ran instead of raiding or fighting some unseen force. Not the loss of familiarity—although that had hit hard at first, a life without friends or family, it had soon been pushed back to devote his brain power to the task of simply surviving. Not even the hardship—while constantly on his mind, it wasn’t the strangest thing to have experienced.

    No. It was the emptiness.

    Wilbur hadn’t seen another human besides Tommy for months.
