Au-gust Prompt: Chemistry

Work Text:

Cam couldn’t have been more excited about today, after all it wasn’t every day that he’d have a conjoined class with students from Blue, which in most cases would make anyone’s day worse, because Blue College stinks. And their students also stink…. All except for one of them: Scott Springwell.

Scott was the same year as Cam and is currently working to graduate from Blue in their science class. The same kinda class Cam attended, the only difference being that Cam attended his classes at Red. Which sadly meant he didn’t get to see Scott that much, except for the rare occasions where they would have conjoined classes. One of those occasions was today, as they had applied chemistry in the last hour of the day. Applied classes were always taught together by both schools, something about the difficulty of getting the lab and experiments approved by the safety department, not that the reason mattered to Cam much.

What mattered to Cam was the fact that he would not only be in a room with Scott for about one and a half hours but also that as a part of the new school friendship initiative each red student would from now on be paired up with a blue student for lab work, and Cam was determined to make Scott his partner.

But before any of that could happen he had to first get through the rest of the school day, and chose something nice to wear, maybe he should ask Katie and Cherri for advice, they have amazing taste in fashion after all.

—————————

It was currently about fifteen more minutes before lunch ended and the chemistry class Cam had been waiting for the whole day would start. So obviously to make sure he would be partnered up with Scott he had to go there early. He’d probably be the first one there, but that was a sacrifice Cam was willing to make. Only that he wasn’t the first student in the room.

The moment Cam walked into the lab, which he expected to be empty, his heart fluttered. At a desk in the second row and right next to the window sat no other than Scott Springwell himself. The blond seemed fully focused on his book and…. Beautiful. Especially with the way his hair was falling as his head was looking down and the cute rhythmic tapping of his finger on the edge of the page. Something which Cam was sure, after his thorough examination of the man, was an unconscious habit.

“Hello, Scott,” Cam loudly greeted as he walked over to sit next to the blond.

Scott looked up in surprise, his green eyes glimmering beautifully, before he returned the greeting in his pretty accented voice, “Hey, Cam”

“So, what’re you reading?” Cam asked with clear curiosity as he looked over the page.

“I have a book report due in about a week, so I was planning to get a head start on it,” Scott replied while also lifting the cover so that Cam could see it.

“Gosh, that’s really smart of you, to get ahead of your learning like that,” Cam said with a big smile, after which Scott turned to the window next to him, if only so he could hide his slight blush from Cam.

Cam didn’t really know what to say next as he didn’t want to annoy Scott who seemed to be done talking to him as he kept his face trained on the window, so instead the two just sat there in almost awkward silence until the room filled up and class began.

Once the lesson officially began the teacher up front started explaining what they would be trying to do today, but Cam, even though he tried his hardest couldn’t really focus on the instructions. It’s not his fault his brain was focusing on Scott instead. The moment he snapped out of it was when Scott started standing to get the materials they needed from the front. With Cam immediately following him and helping.

That’s when they started setting up the experiment and when Cam started really regretting not listening to the instructions. Because he had no clue what he was doing. But he also didn’t want Scott to know that, it would be a really bad impression. So he gritted his teeth and tried what he thought would be right….. that definitely turned out to be a mistake.

Cam isn’t even sure what he did wrong he was just adding something to the vial he thought Scott had told him to add and a few seconds later: BOOM. The pinkish liquid that was previously in the vial had rapidly oozed out, while becoming more slimy in consistency. The expansion was so quick that the vial's volume couldn’t accommodate it anymore and it completely shattered in the motion catapulting pieces of glass and pinky goo everywhere, with most of it being on their table and on Cam and Scott…… Cam had really messed up this time.

The room fell silent after the explosion with the first voice ringing out again being Scott's, full of concern, “Is everyone alright?” The question was quickly followed by room-wide confirmation. At least no one got hurt.

“WHAT IN GODS GOOD NAME HAPPENED?” The teacher angrily screeched, they did not like students messing up their classroom.

“I'm sorry, it was my fault..” Cam tried to explain, before the teacher harshly interrupted him, “Then I hope that you didn’t have plans today, because you two aren’t leaving until my classroom is spotless, got it!”

“But Miss Scott didn’t…..” Cam tried to argue, she couldn’t punish Scott just because Cam was behaving like an idiot.

“GOT IT!” The teacher's yelling left no room for argument. This was so unfair, and worst of all Scott would probably never want to talk to him again after this. All because of a stupid chemistry teacher.

—————————

The lesson had long since ended 30 minutes ago. 30 minutes of cleaning. 30 minutes of silence, which, if someone knew Cam, they knew that was a concerning length of him keeping his mouth shut. But after 30 minutes he couldn’t take it anymore, the silence was too awkward, and he had to say something.

“I'm sorry,” Cam apologised without looking up from where he was cleaning.

“It’s okay, this stuff happens,” Scott immediately dismissed.

“It was my fault and you still got punished, that wasn’t fair on you,” Cam argued back.

“That’s not your fault though,” Scott gently reminded him, which only earned a huff from the other. Before Scott continued, “If you really want to apologise just do it, please, so that we can move on from this.”

And Cam definitely wanted to apologise, but a basic apology simply wouldn’t be enough, no, he needed to do something big. He stayed silent just a bit more while he thought over what to say before it suddenly hit him and he blurted out: “How about I take you out on Saturday as an apology?”

Scott’s face turned a beautiful shade of pink as blush quickly spread across his cheeks before he hastily asked, “You want to apologise with a date?”

That’s when what Cam had said truly sank in to his brain… It’s too late to take it back now, so he's got to commit, “Only if you want to of course, otherwise we could just treat it like a hangout between friends if you’d prefer.”

Scott seemed to think for a moment as he cleaned the last bit of goo from the table. Then seemed to decide something in his head before picking up a piece of paper and writing something on it while saying, “I'd like to go on a date with you, just text me the time later and I'll be there.” And with that Scott passed Cam the note he had written before taking his bag and leaving with a completely flushed face.

After Cam had finished staring after a long-gone Scott, he looked at the note Scott left him… it was his number…. Cam had just been given Scott's number and the blond agreed to a date! This was the best day ever. Wait that meant he had to plan a date, and it needed to be perfect. He doesn't have time to daydream around. This can not go wrong. Cam cannot mess this up, even if his mess-up in class is what even led to this date in the first place.
