Work Text:
Today, Scott had only one plan in mind: relaxing without anyone around to bother him. This had become increasingly difficult within his home over the past month, because that was about the time when his owner's boyfriend moved in.
Scott had always loved his owner, she gave the best head scratches and never bothered him when he was relaxing or doing his own thing, while never denying him attention when he wanted it, as the human should. Her boyfriend had entered Scott’s territory for the first time a while back, and while Scott didn’t particularly like the fact that he stole attention from Scott and didn’t respect the don’t bother me right now rule, the human did learn over time and was now acceptable in his home.
So why did it bother Scott that he moved in? It’s because of who he brought along: Cam. Apparently, the boyfriend already had a pet before he moved into Scott's territory and it was a dog. No, not the mean kind like the own that lives next door and barks threatening things at Scott every time he sees him, but the even worse kind. The kind that’s full of energy and constantly trying to get his attention. And Cam was nothing if not full of energy.
So Scott took his spot on top of a high shelf he knew the dog couldn’t reach and just hoped he wouldn’t be found, once Cam got back from his morning walk.

“Scott! Scott! Scott!” Cam exaidedly called out the moment he got back into the house. Before running through all of the rooms in hopes of finding the cat. On his second run through the room with the big soft thing and the big black box with the moving people he spotted the black cat facing away from him on one of the high shelves. “Scott! Scott! Scott! Scott!”
“What do you want cam,” Scott said in clear annoyance as he turned his head to the dog. So much for his peace and quiet.
“I brought you something” Cam said as he placed a stick on the ground in front of him while looking incredibly proud of himself.
“You brought me a stick?” Scott asked in clear confusion, before adding, “I'm a cat what would I possibly need a stick for?”
That's when Cam seemed to stop for a moment his tail going still before asking in clear confusion and quriosity, “do you cats not bring sticks, balls and bones to the ones you care about?”
“No, we usually just bring them food. You know like a mouse or one of those small birds.” Scott commented with clear disinterest, while cam intusiasticly nodded along. Before continuing to talk with Scott and trying to convince him to get down from the shelf so that they could play. Something that Scott didn’t do, he ended up falling asleep on the shelf to the sound of the dogs' excited chattering.

A few weeks after that day Scott was lying down in Cam's dog bed grooming himself. As he had found that it was quite comfy and that Cam would usually just lie down next to him and not bother him if he was in there. It was the only place Scott could lie down in that Cam would understand as him just wanting to relax and be left alone, which led to Scott almost using it more often than Cam since that discovery.
Scott stopped his grooming process as he heard the front door open, his owner and the other human must be back after having taken Cam to the park, though it seemed like something was different as Scott heard the boyfriend berating Cam, “No. Bad dog. drop it. You can't take that into the house, Cam. I said drop it. Don’t try weaseling yourself past me, mister. Put it down. God, what has gotten into you today? HEY! Come back here this instant. Why aren’t you listening to me?”
Of course that got Scott’s attention so after stretching he started walking towards the front door to see what this commotion was about. He didn’t even get into the corridor before cam came running into the room, clearly exited with something in his mouth. Something that he placed down infront of Scott… A PIGEON! Why did Cam just run in with a pigeon?
“I got you a bird, Scott. Like you said cats do.” Cam excitedly explained as he was fully wagging his tail behind him. Scott couldn’t help but find it somewhat indearing… okay, really indearing.
“Thanks cam.” Scott gently said before leaning forward and licking the side of Cam's face once. The dog completely losing it as he started jumping and spinning for joy.
That’s when the human came around the corner, “Cam, what are you- oh, good you dropped it” the moment the human moved down to pick up the long-dead pigeon Scott started to hiss and scratch at his hand. “Not you to…” the man complained as he pulled his now bleeding hand back.
“We can just leave it for now.” Scott’s owner suggested before leading the other human away towards the food room.
“You know im feeling kinda tired cam, you wanna lie down with me?” Scott offered after he had dragged the bird next to his scratching post.
“Yes! Yes! YES! Absolutely!” Cam happily replied before the two of them made themselves comfy together on Cam's dog bed, with Cam using his head and tail to practically surround Scott's curled-up form. Before Scott dosed off he gave Cam another small lick to the side of his face in front of him… maybe living with a dog wouldnt be quite as bad after all, at least if the dog was Cam.
