Xie Lian expects anything except the low chuckle Hua Cheng lets out. He sees the way his shoulders relaxes completely, leaning back slightly against the wooden frame with indifference.
“Is that what they are saying?” Hua Cheng asks, his tone dripping with an amused, easygoing disdain. “The barracks must be more desperately bored than I realized.” He scoffs gently, “Your Highness should ignore them. It is nothing but the idle fantasies of men who have spent too many weeks staring at fortress walls.”
Xie Lian stands perfectly still on his side of the divider. Despite hearing the careless dismissal in Hua Cheng’s voice, his own heart refuses to slow down.
“So is it not true that you are breaking curfew for… someone else? Besides for… coming here, of course.”
