Hand-Holding

Summary:

Tenna and Spamton get through a bump in the road in their re-established relationship.

Work Text:

After all this time, Tenna couldn’t believe he was finally back with Spamton. Underneath the hate he’d told himself was true, Tenna had missed Spamton unimaginably, and he considered himself blessed to have eventually ended up in his current circumstances. There was just one issue: Spamton’s lack of physical affection towards Tenna. If Spamton hadn’t told Tenna in his own way that he still had feelings for him, Tenna would think Spamton didn’t love him at all. In the past, Spamton was often unable to keep his hands off Tenna, which was a stark contrast to now.

It was the beginning of winter in Castle Town, and Tenna was on a walk around town with Spamton. Tenna himself wasn’t that cold, but he noticed that Spamton was shivering a little even with the mittens and scarf he had on. That was when Tenna put two and two together, both about Spamton’s lack of physical affection and about the shivering: Spamton hated his puppet body. The only reason he wasn’t even holding hands with Tenna was because he didn’t like how he was now at all, and he didn’t want Tenna to think about what he had become. I still love you, Tenna desperately wanted to convey, so he bridged the gap himself. Tenna looked down at his partner and spoke.

“Spamton?”

“YEAH?”

“Is it alright if I hold your hand?”

There was a long moment of silence and hesitation, both of which were also uncharacteristic of Spamton. Tenna guessed that Spamton was mulling over the pros and cons of letting Tenna in physically. It hurt that it was taking Spamton so long to decide, but Tenna knew he had to be patient.

“[[SHORE]],” Spamton eventually replied.

Tenna smiled and gently held his partner’s hand. It was too cold for comfort despite the mittens. He must not be getting nearly enough circulation now that he’s not organic, Tenna thought. Tenna hated to bring up Spamton’s state more than he had to, but Tenna also didn’t want Spamton to be uncomfortable for his sake.

“You’re so cold,” Tenna remarked, trying to make his statement sound like it came out of nowhere. “Do you want to go back to my room?”

“DO YOU?” Tenna could tell that Spamton didn’t want to think about where his lack of warmth was coming from. He also knew that Spamton knew that they would have to discuss physical accommodations eventually, but Tenna decided to pretend to take the lead like Spamton wanted him to.

“I do,” Tenna responded.

Idly talking with his partner on the journey, Tenna held Spamton’s hand all the way back to his room. Once he did talk fully about Spamton’s new physical state with him, Tenna vowed to buy him thicker mittens.
