Ernie couldn’t sleep. He was tired of tossing and turning in bed and decided to get up, going to the kitchen he then sat at the island. He wasn’t paying attention too much, staring out the little window over the sink at the night sky. So when Davis came into the kitchen he didn’t even realize it until there was a hand on his shoulder. Ernie jumped, turning to see who had touched him.
“Sorry, didn’t meant to startle you. Just wanted to check on you.” Davis sat down in the chair beside Ernie.
“Sorry, couldn’t sleep. I got up so I didn’t wake you up, clearly that didn’t work. You can head back to bed, I’ll come up when I think I can sleep.”
“I know how you get on these nights and I’m not leaving you on your own with your thoughts.” Davis put his hand over Ernie’s where it was resting on the island.
“I’m fine, promise.”
Davis didn’t respond, just got up and headed towards the fridge. Ernie watched him, wondering what he was doing. Davis open the freezer and pulled out two pints of ice cream: chocolate peanut butter for Ernie and strawberry for himself. He grabbed two spoons before heading back to the island and sitting down again. Ernie didn’t say anything just took the ice cream and spoon handed to him. The two sat side-by-side and ate their ice cream quietly. Ernie didn’t say anything, just slid his head on Davis’ shoulder to show his appreciation.
When they made it back to bed minutes later Ernie laid down beside Davis, listening to his breathing even out. He smiled, thankful to have the other man in his life, as he fell asleep.
