Written for Day 1 of Lawlight Week: Revive/Restart

Notes:

Welcome to my collection of connected drabbles for Lawlight week. Just silly little works :D

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The forensics lab found fingerprints. Light Yagmi’s fingerprints all over the Death Note.

All signs pointed to it. Light Yagami was Kira.

The behavior was the same. The morality was a perfect mirrored image. His black and white view of justice was exposed.

Not long after the fingerprints were found, Light Yagami calmly was escorted to prison. Life sentence is what he received. Kira died with the memories of the Death Note.

That was months ago.

L Lawliet is back in England, living in his childhood room. A plain white room with only a computer and a single pillow.

Every news site is reporting on where “L” went. “L” hasn’t picked up a single new case. Rumors of death, sickness, mental health, and physical health all swirled around globally for weeks. That was until it fizzled out and society stopped caring.

The truth is that nothing excited him anymore. All the cases looked too easy. It didn’t bring the thrill that the Kira case quite did.

A state of depression in what L lives in now. Watari hasn’t stopped trying to get him to take cases or even interact with the outside world.

“L, the six month check on Kira is this weekend,” Watari announces as he opens the door to the white room.

Many global superpowers demanded that Kira be checked on every month to make sure he wasn’t losing it more than he already had. More often than not, Watari goes alone and brings his laptop for L to voice call.

“I’ll come.”

Two words. That’s all he needs to offer.

He doesn’t need to verbalize how he wishes that Light were here to help with cases. That he got used to having another mind with the same genius he had.

That he grew attached.

Attachment is the true death of a person.

The moment someone were to care for someone is the moment their fate has been decided.

Nights were spent curled around a pillow, daydreaming of a time where he could turn to his right and see Light slaving away over case files.

It was much too late. At least in Light’s eyes. He wasn’t used to the early mornings and late nights like L. He had a strict sleep schedule. Too well maintained, even during his time imprisoned.

“Ryuzaki, why can’t we go to bed?”

“I’m still awake, therefore I can work.”

“I can’t though. I’m too tired. I need sleep or else I won’t be able to help with the case.”

“That sounds horrible.”

“Stop making fun of me!”

“Just rest your head.”

Light looked indignant. Like he had another comment about what Ryuzaki offered him but couldn’t bring himself to speak it aloud.

Light, hunched over his desk like a schoolboy, looked pretty. That is what L thought.

His eyelids fluttering as he struggled to get comfortable against the cold metal.

He looked peaceful once he fully fell asleep. During the day, he looked to have on a mask that shattered during sleep.

That peace was reflected onto L that night.

The plane ride to Japan was long. L never enjoyed flying. It was pointless in his opinion.

An odd feeling started brewing in his gut when they landed and he saw the loud busy streets of Tokyo again.

It felt familiar, like home.

But England was home, or as much as it could be.

L was meeting with Light Yagami tomorrow afternoon. This meant an evening in a hotel room and silently begging for these thoughts to be eradicated from his mind.

Luckily, or unluckily, it went by fast. The afternoon quickly rolled around and L was now face to face with Light Yagami. Otherwise known as Kira.

“It’s you doing these checks now?” Light’s voice was thick with annoyance. It was clear that L wasn’t wanted in his presence.

L did ruin his life. Even if he wasn’t Kira, that education from To-Oh was out the window. They weren’t going to let him come back. No matter what the excuse would be.

“Watari is here with me. It’ll be the usual like before,” L doesn’t look at him, he stays watching the ground like it will come and attack him. This moment is never going to end. This isn’t going to help the thoughts swirling in his mind.

“Fine. Fuck off,” Light waves his hand dismissively. A slight flicker of emotion in his eyes when looking away from L.

As Watari goes about his check, L stands awkwardly in the corner. His eyes keep drifting toward Light. This shouldn’t even be on his mind. Not at all.

Watari leaves for a moment to check on something he found suspicious.

“Life’s boring without you,” surprisingly it wasn’t L who spoke up first, it was Light. He has raised his head from where it was bowed against his chest, “I know it should be an obvious statement, but I despise it here.”

“You need some sort of enrichment. Join me.”

“What?”

“Join me on cases.”

“How?”

“You stay with me. And Watari.”

“Why?”

“Like you said, it’s been quite boring.”

“You’re getting me out of here…?”

“Once you were convicted, the world powers gave me all authority over you. In the scenario where I want you to stay in England, I don’t have to convince anyone. I'll just take you.”

“Why are you just letting me restart?! You’re so stupid!” Light stood suddenly, yelling loudly in L’s direction.

Why was he letting Light do this? It’s unbelievably unlike him.

No. No feelings involved. That’s not allowed.

As Watari returns, L informs him of his decision.

Within the same hour, Light and L were facing each other on a private jet. The few items he still owned were taken with. They’ll give him what he needs. It doesn’t matter.

Maybe now that Light is by his side, these odd feelings will leave.
