Summary
The serum's advanced healing factor is fantastic, until the body insists on healing over shrapnel faster than it can be removed. It also means that relief in the form of morphine is burned off in mere minutes, making Steve acutely aware of every slice, every burn, and every stitch he receives that night.

This Steve Rogers whump fic is set during the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, wherein Steve endures a medical procedure while wide awake.
