    They knew what it was for without even looking at it, though they hadn’t thought about it since they’d received the letter months earlier. Leaning in, they placed a quick kiss on Stevie’s nose as she glowed with happiness, her smile warm as the sun, as her fingers played with the new bit of red plastic that adored her. “Do you want to come with me to Indianapolis tomorrow?” Eddie threw the question away, over their shoulder, as they turned to scan the closet.

    Leaning next to the still open jewelry box, she thumbed through its contents again, as though she thought she might have missed something as she answered, “yeah, sure. Like a day trip or for work?”

    Now that the club was their only job, it didn’t take up nearly enough of their time. Eddie had mentioned maybe a month earlier that they wanted to expand but this trip wasn’t about that. “For my mom’s parole hearing,” Eddie finally blurted out.

    (Or, the one where Eddie finally admits the truth.)
