Work Text:

Mel

Mel was more drunk than she’d ever been before. Lacking the need to stay sober for the sake of her sister, she had ‘let loose’, as Santos had put it — 2 martinis and an occasional sip of whatever Santos offered her. Though now, down from the stage and alone at a table, it was all catching back up to her. She looked around the room for a back exit, she knew there’d be one somewhere as Santos’ new friend who she was currently up singing with had gone out for a smoke. Mel didnt want to get up, didnt want to commit to leaving santos thinking that she’d left her, and she didnt know when their song would end. Fuck. She got up anyway.

Trinity

Trinity stumbled drunkenly down from the stage, one hand on the girl she’d been singing with and one out in front of her hovering above the stair railings as she found her footing. She held her arm out so her singing partner wouldn’t fall and faced away from her, looking around the room in search of Mel. Trinity squinted, their table was empty.

“Fuck one minute, um…” she turned to look at the girl she very much did not know the name of. “I have to find my friend, sorry, bye — I might not really be back,” she gave a half hearted nod of her head before speed walking to their abandoned table to grab her backpack she’d brought from work. Fucking hell, Mel, someone could’ve stolen this… she dug around for her phone.

Trinity

“mel??? Did u lesve ne??”

“mel?????”

“pls andwer r u ok”

Melanoma PTMC

“Yeah I’m outside the back exit sorry”

Trinity

“ok im cominf”

Slinging her bag over her shoulder and stumbling back slightly from the force, Santos made her way outside. At the door frame, Trinity stuck her head out and found Mel on the floor with her bag at her feet.

“You good?”

Mel cleared her throat and didn’t look at her fully. “Yeah.”

Trinity paused before walking over and sitting next to Mel, her eyes looking at their surroundings — a shitty back alley. “You’re, um, rocking.” She glanced at Mel who was staring straight ahead at the brick wall. Mel didn’t reply, her head twitched slightly. Trinity sat back. “When’s your sister getting home, Mellulitus?”

Mel glanced over at her. “She’s at her boyfriend’s and they’re dropping her off at her living centre.”

Trinity nodded, still leant away from her, unsure what to do. “Do you wanna… go home?” She tried. Mel nodded stiffly. “Right then.” Trinity got up and Mel followed, she looked like she was going to burst into fucking tears.

Mel

Mel allowed herself to follow Santos, not being able to figure out what she usually did to calm herself down in her drunken state.

“Do you wanna come to mine?” Trinity asked tentatively as she looked down at the lyft app on her phone. “Just- I mean if you don’t wanna be without Becca or something- fucking hell…” Mel glanced over at her repeated misclicking. “Mel?” Trinity asked, the way Santos said her name was always harsh. She missed her sister. She swallowed.

“Yeah, I don’t know I can go home later.”

The car journey was mostly silent, Mel trying to get less drunk and looking out of the window away from Trinity. Her hair felt like it was crawling over her neck.

“Do you have my hair tie?”

“Maybe,” Trinity trilled and looked through her bag. Mel only faintly heard her say ‘oh’ as she discovered it on her wrist. She was regretting agreeing to go back with Santos.

Trinity

She really did not want to be alone. Huckleberry was gone, saved himself from her, clearly. She wanted to scream as the car rounded the corner to her flat. But the car still stopped and she was still forced to get out. She thanked the driver and waited for Mel to come around the other side of the car. Before they walked up the stairs to the complex. “It’s a fucking tip by the way. But it’s only on the next floor up, so.” Mel didn’t reply. She actually managed to not say a single thing all the way up the stairs until Santos was unlocking her door. Why the actual fuck have I done this.

“Thanks.” Mel said, looking like she was scared to go in.

Mel

They’d both gotten comfortable in front of the TV and Trinity had gotten changed into shorts and a different shirt. Mel was curled up in the corner of the sofa with her knees to her chest while Trinity was half lying down, Mel didn’t know if the other girl was awake but the question evidently wasn’t particularly pressing because she fell asleep within 30 minutes of the show ending.

Trinity’s neighbours is what woke Mel. Her head hurt from the night before along with most of her other limbs from the position she’d been in. She allowed herself to slowly stretch out, careful to not touch Trinity who was still lying on the sofa. She didn’t exactly know what to do, except wait for Trinity to stir. She didn’t want to move anyway, she was tired and inexplicably upset. It was the first time she’d seen Trinity so defenceless, and she really saw at her. Her hair was covering her face that was at the opposite end of the couch to Mel and her shirt revealed part of her stomach. Her shorts had rode up to reveal layers of white scars on her thigh and she’d kicked one of her socks off in her sleep. She was pretty.
