Am I Still Alive? (Or Has The Light Gone Black?)

Summary:

BloodyMary but there's a language barrier. In Simon's universe they speak a common "standard" language across all the space stations that is a combination of the most common Earth languages. Simon is multilingual and speaks the standard language in addition to Martian, Eden dialect of Martian, and Korean. Grace only speaks English and a little bit of Eridian so they have to find a way to communicate with each other.

Notes:

Hiiii!!!!! This is our first fic ever so we apologize for our writing in advance. We've been looking for fics with a language barrier between Simon and Grace but couldn't find a whole lot so we decided to write our own!!! Anyways neither of us are linguists OR scientists so take all the technical stuff in the fic with a grain of salt. Hope you enjoy!!!!!!

Chapter 1: Walking Up to Me Expecting Words

Chapter Text

Blood rushes up from the crawlspace as I latch the life jacket around the black box. God she better be right about this. As I close the buckle, a sound from the control panel breaks my focus, the motion sensor.

“Oh fuck” I mutter, it's gonna hit me.

Just as I finish my thought the ship rocks hard sending me straight into the wall. My hand grips a pipe to steady myself, but something else grips me back. I turn my head to see tendrils crawling up my arm, and just as I look they shoot across my whole body, attaching my right hand to a pipe on the opposite wall. A scream tears out of my chest, holy shit, it hurts so bad, get it off, get it off.

I kick my legs out towards the pilot chair, but the blood makes my feet slide right off. I try the next best thing and swing my leg right up next to my hand using the momentum to finally pry it off. Another cry leaves my mouth as my skin sticks and rips off the metal. This is the worst pain I've ever felt, it's too much. But I continue on.

The monster taunts me, screaming at me through the walls of the ship as I try to pull my other arm free. This one is much more stuck I realize as I use both feet to push away from the wall. An even stronger pain shoots up from my elbow but I close my eyes and continue to push. I don’t realize I’ve broken free until my back slams into the wall, knocking the air out of my lungs.

My whole body feels like it's on fire, I’ve never felt this much pain. I look down to what should be my hand but… there's… nothing? Just blood spurting out of the wound. It's… mine? My vision starts going blurry, black starts to seep in from the sides. I’m so tired is the last thing I think before succumbing to the darkness.

It's bright. That's all I can think as I try to ease my eyes open.

Why is it so fucking bright? My eyes seem to shut almost faster than they opened, yet unable to escape the light even from behind my eyelids.

Where am I? Am I dead? Am I in heaven? No. I wouldn’t go there. I try opening my eyes again, forcing them to stay open this time. Without even a second to look around or try and grasp what's happening, I'm met with a loud… voice? I can't understand the words its saying. It sounds like words but I can't understand what they mean. What the fuck.

My eye finally registers what all is in my line of sight. A robot arm thing hangs down from the ceiling above me. The voice sounds again. To my terror and dismay I still can't understand what it's saying. How hard did I hit my head?

I flit my eyes across the room some more. Everything is so white and so bright. The voice sounds off again. Wait, is that… English? Whatever it is, it's definitely an Earth language. Old but vaguely familiar. Where the fuck am I? There are no space stations in all of the C.O.I. that would be using an Earth language.

That's when the sound of footsteps draws me away from my thoughts.
