   Grace sent the beetles before realizing they were resistant to xenonite. The beetles never made it back and humanity did what it could in terms of backup plans to save themselves. Eventually the astrophage killed every star within visibility of the space stations, also known as the Quiet Rapture. Now, hundreds of years later, Simon suffers the fate of the submarine. But instead of waking up to the faces of his brothers in heaven, he wakes up to a sterile and bright white ceiling. Maybe he's been granted some grace after all.
