In the Beginning

Summary:

What if Buffy and Riley knew each other before they ever came to Sunnydale? What if Riley had a little sister who glommed onto Buffy with tragic consequences? What if things changed? And what if they didn't? This is Book 1 in my Briley rewrite series.

7/27/26: Important story notes added.

Notes:

I know I am in the minority, but I loved the Buffy/Riley dynamic, and I hate how they got so twisted up. This is my chance to rewrite their ending and some of their beginning. I hope you like this.

Chapter 1: FYI

Chapter Text

I probably should have posted a note like this before adding the first chapter here, but better late than never, right?

-What this is:

Book 1 of my AU "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" fan fiction series. A fusion of the movie & TV Show, it reimagines the origins of the relationship between Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Riley Finn (Marc Blucas), and rewrites their heartbreaking ending.

-Why I'm writing it:

I am a fan of Riley Finn (does the username give it away? lol). It's sometimes difficult to find stories where he is portrayed positively, so I created this little universe and let him run free. I loved his relationship with Buffy (before things got so turned upside down), and I want to give them their endgame. There will be at least 4 books in this series, with varying lengths.

-When is this set?

Book 1 is set in the mid-1990s, mere weeks before Buffy becomes the Slayer.

-Will any movie characters appear?

Characters like Lothos, Merrick, Nicki, and Jeffrey will show up, though I am opting to use artistic license in how I portray them. For example, I want *my* Lothos to be less of a comical figure and more of a menacing specter.

-Don't Buffy & Riley seem a little OOC?

I blame their "off" behavior on the idiocy of youth! Pre-slaying, Buffy's life is basically a series of shopping sprees. She has very few cares until the vampires start popping up, baring their pointy teeth at her, and trying to kill all her friends. As Merrick said in the movie, Buffy is "undisciplined... frivolous... quite possibly the most vacuous choice."

Conversely, Riley has nothing but cares: a dead father, a cross-country move, trying to hold down a job while going to school and taking care of everybody. He's worried about getting into college, he's worried about money, he's worried about his little sister...

Riley has no time for the beautiful but super annoying girl next door, and Buffy has nothing but time to annoy him. With seemingly little in common, they are bound to butt heads.

Time will aid their growth and help them to become the people they are meant to be.

IDK if anyone will read the long-ass note above, but I felt compelled to post it. Thank you for giving my weird story a chance.
