Homophobia, institutional pressure, and the particular dangers Ilya might face as a queer Russian athlete still exist in this world, but they are explored less extensively (and resolved more generously) than they might be in reality.
The locker room is loud after the game, buoyant with the particular kind of celebration that follows a game everyone had enjoyed far more than the stakes would indicate.
Jackie gives Shane a rapid explanation of bedtime, snacks, allergies, emergency numbers, and the specific conditions under which Arthur is allowed to watch another episode of Scooby-Doo.
The house is beautiful. Historic without being impractical. Close to everything Matti had cared about. Ilya had chosen it for a specific future. Now that future is gone, and the house remains stubbornly well suited for a life he no longer has.
Shane wonders whether Svetlana has ever spoken to him about any of this. Probably not. Their friendship was built in a different country, under different circumstances, with its own private architecture.
