Now a quick small chapter that will provide some background on how secondary genders develop in my au.
If you would like to skip and just try to figure out how it works as you read, be my guest, but if you would like to read my explanation here it is.
So I'll start with my interpretation on how female alphas and male omegas work in my au. For starters both female alphas and male omegas have the same qualities that tell them their gender before they present. But when they present as a female alpha or a male omega their biology changes so to speak.
More like they gain and start to develop the opposite genders reproductive organs while still maintaining their previous ones. I wanted to clear this out the way as it's implied in later chapters as I write all their experiences with their presentations.
Now I will explain how people's first rut or heats go when they first present as either an alpha or omega.
I like to think of them as mock ruts or heats, more that they experience the symptoms that tell you you're going into or are in a rut or heat. They aren't inherently sexual until they're well into adulthood which is usually in their twenties. And even then they only turn sexual if there is a potential ‘mate’ nearby in the week leading up to a heat or rut.
Heats for newly presented omegas tend to be learning how to nest and having a stronger urge to have family close by. And usually this time is spent growing accustomed to new instincts and scents as their nose can greater detect scents
Now newly presented alphas can become very dangerous if not properly handled. As in this time period of presenting their instincts demand that they protect their territory and to challenge any other alpha they see. If it isn't nipped in the bud it can lead to an alpha having poor control of instincts. This is usually combated with an alpha parent or family member.
As when a newly presented alpha tries to challenge an older alpha they can more easily be shut down by the older alpha which leads them to calm down. But that doesn't mean it happens to every newly presented alpha but it is always better to ensure after their mock rut is over that they know how to reign in instinct so that they don't get hurt or hurt someone.
Now my interpretation on betas is a bit different, for me betas do have a unique noticeable scent that is just really faint compared to those of an alpha or omega. But betas noses grow to have weaker sense of smell for scents over time. These changes can oftentimes feel jarring to a newly presented beta who was used to smelling packmates scents before they presented. This is usually a period where they learn to adjust to their new normal.
But this essentially summarizes all the info you'll need to understand certain reactions or behaviors in his fic. As well as some info that may come back later on.
