The glow of Gotham’s skyline flickered through the grime-streaked glass of a third-floor walk-up.
Crackle.
Red Robin’s comm line hissed as he landed silently on the fire escape. “West side clear. No sign of the Scarecrow’s stash.”
Thump. Nightwing swung past, landing effortlessly on the ledge below, back to the glass. “Same here. Just a lot of empty apartments.”
Inside the window, barely three feet from Dick’s shoulder, a pristine white cat sat perfectly still on the sill. It had one icy blue eye and one warm amber eye. It blinked slowly, turning its head with an unnerving, sentient tilt to stare directly at the gap between Dick’s shoulder blades.
Batman dropped from a roof beam to the balcony adjacent. “Focus. Keep moving.”
A low, static hum...
Chirp.
...Came from Jason’s end. “Uh, B? You seeing this?”
From his own perch across the alley, Jason watched the cat. It wasn’t looking at him. It was looking through the wall, right at where Bruce was crouched.
“It’s a cat, Todd,” Damian’s sharp voice cut in, perched high above. “Ignore it.”
As if offended, the white cat stretched languidly, then lifted one paw to tap twice on the window pane. Tink. Tink.
Dick froze. “...Did that cat just signal us?”
Tim quickly zoomed in through his camera lens. “Heterochromia. White coat. No ear tags. And look—it’s got a little black smudge near its nose, like a—"
Crack. Thump.
The cat suddenly swatted the window latch from the inside. The cheap aluminum frame popped, swinging inward. The white cat hopped from the sill onto a worn-out couch, curled its tail, and yawned.
Crackle. A grave silence filled the comms.
Bruce’s gravelly voice finally cut through. “...Miss Kyle is in the apartment.”
“Which Miss Kyle?” Jason hissed.
From inside, a smudge of purple fabric shifted as Selina’s muffled voice purred, “Oh, don’t mind him. He likes the view. He’s just a critic.”
The Batfamily stared at the white cat, who stared right back, leaning its head sideways like it knew exactly who they were, and found them mildly hilarious.
“Well,” Dick sighed, shaking his head. “Guess we have an audience tonight.”
The white cat just flicked its tail, utterly unimpressed by the grim vigilantes camping on its windowsill.
