You've Got Mail!

Summary:

The first email is timestamped 03:24, and Qifrey's bewildered by the fact someone made his soup recipe at 3am, and that they enjoyed it enough they felt compelled to email him about it.

This, as you might expect, changes a lot of things.

(written for the ficwip 5k challenge)

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

...I find this recipe filling, especially in the colder months, although it took my students a while to warm up to it! Still, they’re never going to complain when there’s hot soup on the table waiting for them to come back inside from their latest walk to the nearby town, or from their latest snowman-making adventure.
Not to say the recipe isn’t for grown-ups too!
I’ve made it for guests a few times now, and it’s a hit every single time.
Just make sure you have enough cheese for the dairy-lovers in your life…

i promise im usually better at writing emails thatn this and I think i should probably have just left a comment but ok genuinely your recipes are absolutely saving my life rn because look, ok, i reallt don’t like cooking even though i’m broadly OKAY at it, but every recipe you post is magical and when i make it it turns out DELICIOUS and I’m really not sure how??? because i didn’t know i was even bloody capable of cooking, seriously, but i think your recipes may actually be magic

anyway yeah. from the bottom of my heart thank you because you’re keeping me from getting scurvy and living off coffee and instant noodles from the corner shop or those packet pasta things

Cheers

Good morning!

Thank you so much for your kind email!

While I’m worrying slightly for your sleep schedule - assuming you and I are in the same time zone - I really, truly am flattered that you enjoy my recipes so much, and that they’ve helped you discover a love for cooking.

There will definitely be more coming up soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Oh god

I’m so sorry for sending that email it really should’ve stayed in the drafts. pretty obviously i hadn’t been sleeping a whole lot, so it… well, you can tell. i fell asleep on the sofa immediately after sending it and maybe i was comatose for a few days idk.

more genuinely, your recipes really are helpful. My cooking skills have always been a bit lackluster lol but i’ve been working on things with the help of your recipes, so sometimes I’d almost say I’m good at it now.

At least I’m able to cook things that keep me upright and surviving a day at work hahaha

Thanks again, sorry bout the email

Don’t apologise! Like I said, I’m flattered, and it means a lot that I got to see a very genuine reaction to my recipes 😂 people leave comments but I think they’re quite polished and tend not to be someone’s knee-jerk response.

I do hope you aren’t overworking yourself! I’m assuming that’s what got you so tired, at any rate, but you should be taking care of yourself. Hopefully the recipes I come up with can help out with that a little, since I do try and make sure that they’re as filling and nutritious as possible.

If you’re looking for some help with sleep, I can recommend this recipe, since it’s a nice warm, filling meal. Or, if you desperately need to stay awake, here are a few recipes that can help with that, all based on a tea I find is particularly good at keeping me awake, anyway.

At any rate, keep an eye out for my next recipes! I hope you’ll enjoy them - is there anything especially that you enjoy?

Take care!

Now, this one is an acquired taste, but if you do it properly then this can be a great way to get Omega 3’s and important nutrients into someone’s diet - just remember to be careful not to use too many of the key ingredient, because it can be quite an overwhelming flavour!
My students were - understandably - hesitant about this one but once I eased them into it, they were willing to try a few different things with them involved.
I was given these as a gift from someone I’m close to…

Me again sorry

I don’t want to bother you, but the latest upload is one I really like and it’s one of the things I actually like cooking for myself haha. Ihave to admit, I didn’t like them for a long time but when I was little i went for tea round a friends place and his, like, adopted dad made us dinner using these and i became a big fan since then.

I noticed there was a couple different ways you suggest to cook here and I wanted to throw in my two cents here: I usually make flame-seared starchovy and gem tomato poppers, and you can throw in some starspice as well for those so inclined

Anyway i dont want you to take any of this as critique!! literally just thought i’d share my favourite haha, i made yours though and i really enjoyed them. the salad was delicious and I really enjoyed the starchovies with the carapace yam too, very satisfying and filling

anyhow cheers

Hello again!

I’m glad someone else enjoys these recipes! I know these ones are more of an acquired taste - like I said - but I’m also very grateful you gave me a suggestion of your own.

I can imagine how nice those would be, actually: I’m guessing there’s cheese too? It would make sense, and I think that would pair well with them. I mean, I know I’d definitely be putting cheese in them, at any rate 😅.

Haha, you’ve reminded me of things from when I was little too. I had a friend come round a few times and he stayed for dinner as well, of course, and the man who raised me - like you were saying, he was something of a father figure to me - used to cook with starchovies too. He really helped expand my palate, and that’s what I try and do with my students when I cook things for them.

Thank you again for your email and getting in touch! It’s nice to talk about things with another adult, haha.

Subject: Exam Schedule!

To: [email protected]

Hi Qifrey!

Just letting you know the upcoming exam schedule for the girls this year - I know Richeh is reluctant, but I’ve included the advanced ones too, in case you manage to convince her to go for them. I think you’re right, and that she could probably go for it, as well as Agott, but I’ll leave it up to you.

Plenty of time to think about these things, of course, but keep me up to date on what’s going on with them.

Miss you! We should grab a coffee sometime, it’s been too long.

What do you mean it doesn’t work?

Utowin I really really need you to make it clear to me what you’ve done here because as far as I’m aware everything was working just fine until you send me that email, so please enlighten me as to how exactly you’ve gone and cocked it up this time.

Literally I am begging you. Utowin I am on my hands and my knees begging you to explain what happened because do you know how much of a pain C++ is to use??? It’s a pain. It’s really hard. And I spent a long time on this one and now it’s broken?

Did you let Easthies touch it???? He doesn’t know shit. Don’t let him touch it. Tell me what the issue is and I’ll look at it again, but DO NOT! let him go near it again.

Anyway. Give me the rundown on the whole thing, I’ll check everything over. I’m still mad at you though and you owe me a beer.

Thanks for absolutely nothing,

Olruggio?

One of my students is fairly reluctant to try new veggies - often she’ll turn her nose up at them completely, actually - but I’ve been working on ways to get some more into her diet. I have a little garden, myself, and I’m fairly self-sufficient, but she’s picky enough that I had to come up with a completely new method of putting things together.
However she, like most of my students, has something of a sweet tooth, so the first thing I could think of was mixing the legumes with sugar and making a kind of jam to spread over a puffbun, which she loved! (So did the others but I can rest easy saying that it’s predominantly for one of them). If you’re struggling to imagine what I’m going for here, all you need to do is think of a red bean bun - or dorayaki!
Now to start, make sure you (accidentally!) leave your halfmoon harvest a little longer than you meant to…

Hi girls!

Good afternoon,

I just wanted to confirm a few things before I start studying in earnest for the exams this year.

I would be grateful if you’d provide a list of texts you think I should focus on working from - especially if they’re texts/books we didn’t work on or go over in our lessons - or any other external resources you think might be good to look over. I’d also appreciate any feedback on recent work, or any advice that you have for me.

Thanks in advance,

Agott Arklaum

Good afternoon,

I’d really appreciate it if you would stop slandering the team I work with for no real reason. Your comments were unwarranted and I don’t appreciate anybody I work with being spoken to in that way.

Hiehart may not be perfect, but that does NOT give you the right to talk to him in that way. Even if he was perfect that still wouldn’t give you that right, because nothing at all does.

A dear friend of mine has grown far fonder of spice than he used to be - I remember when we were young and it would leave him coughing and blowing his nose. I must admit, his tolerance is still not quite as good as mine, but I have a suspicion he’s working on it in secret.
Besides, we’ve only recently reconnected, and I think he’s taken the fact I still tolerate spice better (although I don’t much care for anything that’s spicy just for the sake of it!) than he does as a challenge. He’s always been competitive!

anyway it was nice to see you again and get a chance to catch up. after the … lack of understanding via our emails it’s genuinely nice to talk face to face. and also far too embarrassing to say any of that out loud. so. yeah. nice to see you, qifrey.

I can only apologise for how sporadically I’m uploading a new recipe these days! A lot of things have been happening and it’s been hard to keep up with the blog as well as life itself - for any interested, I no longer live alone, although I now live with a workaholic… (not that I’m complaining, since I know he’s reading this!!)
Still, I’ve been keeping up with my cooking! This is one I developed for him specifically, since he’s always craving a midnight snack, but knows fried food is best avoided late at night…
