Summary
Dennis Whitaker has spent years pretending his back is something he can outsmart. A farming accident before college compromised his spine, and every surgery, every stretch, every carefully timed pill has been part of the bargain that lets him keep working in the emergency department.
But when a bad lift during a trauma shift sends white-hot pain, the lie starts to crack.
