Yearly night terrors

Summary:

Edgeworth stays over at Wright’s house to discuss a case, but things don’t go like he thought it would (He had some pretty bad nightmares). Luckily he won’t have to overcome it alone this time.

Notes:

Hii, this is my third one-shot and I’m pretty excited about this one! It focuses a lot around Edgeworth with his diep insecurities and trauma. I hope you’ll like it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Miles Edgeworth had had a long day. Well actually a long whole two weeks.

He might’ve pretended he was dead for a whole year, but that didn’t mean the rumours stopped. The first couple of months were manageable. He was busy with the Matt Engarde case and everyone was still too shocked to even say anything about his sudden reappearance.

Unfortunately that didn’t last very long. People started gossiping about the “demon prosecuter”, that ran away from the people that helped him (Even tho those people had already long forgiven him!), and ofcourse, they also had to talk about his mentor, Manfred von Karma, the person that murdered his father, ‘adopted’ him, took him away from the only people he still had, raised him to be everything he was against at and lastly tried to frame him for murder.

He already knew von Karma wasn’t exactly too fond of him, but seeing that look he gave him, his own ‘son’, in court, was heart dropping. All that resentment build up from the last years in one terrifying stare. He can still see the anger in his memories. Another thing to haunt him at night.

The other prosecutors gave him a hard time welcoming back too. They were all disgusted by Manfred von Karma and even tho Miles wants so badly to change, they still saw him as his next image. The demon prosecutor that ruined people’s lives for his own self centered reputation.

He had a lot of work to do anyway, so he tried to focus himself on that. But it’s a little bit hard when the whole building is talking about you and giving you uncertain glances everywhere you go.

One afternoon at around 7pm, he was finally done with working for the day, when his phone suddenly started ringing. First he grimaced, thinking it was one of those annoying magazine authors again that wanted to know everything about his personal life, but then he saw who was calling..

‘Hello Wright, good evening’ he answered, smiling a little bit at hearing the other mans voice.

“Hey Edgeworth, sorry for bothering you, but would you maybe want to come over to..you know.. drink something.. and ofcourse discuss that case I’ve been talking about!”

Miles chuckled a little bit at that (not letting Phoenix know, obviously ) and thought about the request.
He originally planned to go straight home to Pess, his adorable chihuahua. But it didn’t seem so bad to socialise a bit with his.. rival? Acquaintance? Friend? He didn’t really know what they were.

‘Is good with me. I’ve just finished work anyway, so I’ll be there in thirty minutes.’

“Great! See you soon.”

Miles arrived at Phoenix’s apartment . It’s been a while since he went there. Phoenix opened the door with his usual smile and welcomed Edgeworth in. They both sat on the couch with a cup of coffee and tea in their hands and began discussing this case Phoenix was working on, a murder case of Don Fire, who was burned to death by supposedly his sister, Meneau Fire. Yet he just knew something wasn’t right, but he didn’t know what.

However, after a while the men stopped reviewing over the case, but started talking about their own personal lives. Edgeworth was glad he could finally complain about all the stress he went throughout the last couple of days, while Phoenix just carefully listened. Subsequently the conversation went over to funny childhood memories they experienced together with Larry.

And before they knew it, it was already very late. Once Edgeworth began to feel a bit droopy, he checked his watch.

‘Oh, it’s already 2 am? I guess I’ll have to get going then. Thank you for the tea, Wright.’

“No problem at all Edgeworth! But are you really going to drive home right now? Its raining pretty hard outside..”, Phoenix pointed out. He looked a bit hesitant for some reason.

‘Well, I actually have a car Wright, it’s not like i’ll get wet.’

“Yeah but, you know.. It.. I..”, the other man stammered, his hand around his neck making that face he always uses when he’s bluffing in court.

‘What are you trying to suggest, just spit it out’ The prosecutor began to get impatient.

“I.. I want you to stay, Edgeworth” Phoenix finally muttered, so quiet you could barely hear it.

“I know you’ve been having a pretty difficult time right now and especially- this time around.. it must be pretty exhausting for you.”

Oh exhausting it was. Miles has been drained from literally every part of his body.

“Plus, I get that it can be hard to be alone at those moments. I also still get nightmares around the month april about..” He cut off his own sentence, “You know..”

That’s right. Phoenix has also been traumatised by almost getting poisoned by his evil ex girlfriend.

“At those times all I wish for are just a couple of sympathetic eyes and a mouth reassuring me that I’m fine, that everything’s over. So I want to do that for you, Edgeworth.” Phoenix explained anxiously, uncertain about the reaction that the other might give him.

Miles was naturally going to reject him, like he usually does whenever something involves emotions. But something inside him knows he wants to stay. He knows he doesn’t want to be alone, not able to sleep from all the night terrors, without having anyone by his side.

After about a minute or two pondering about it, he finally spoke: ‘Fine, I’ll stay for tonight.’
Phoenix smiled widely at that. It felt so genuine, so heartwarming that Miles had to glance away before his cheeks could get red.

‘But I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep on that couch. It looks and feels.. well.. uncomfortable. No offence.’

“Hey! Don’t diss my furniture, it also deserves love! But yeah, I get it.”

Phoenix thought for a moment before opening his mouth again.

“Um.. my bed is big enough..? It could easily fit like three people, really”

‘.Okay.. no problem, I suppose..’ Miles didn’t even think about the fact that he would have to share a bed with him. But I guess there’s no going back now.

“I’ll go get some pyjamas. If I still have some, haha..” the other man said, smiling sheepishly at the other.

꧁⎝ 𓆩༺✧༻𓆪 ⎠꧂

It was true that Wright’s bed was pretty big. It was surprisingly soft too, considering his usual.. budget.
Edgeworth took the spare pyjamas that Phoenix lent him. Luckily they were the same size, so they fitted perfectly.

The lawyers both laid there, on opposite side of the bed, staring at the ceiling.

“I’ve missed these kind of things, you know.”

Edgeworth raised an eyebrow at the sudden statement from the other.

‘What exactly did you miss?’

“Well, this. It reminds me of the sleepovers that we used to have when we were nine, remember? Staying up late, talking about random things and laughing so loud that we accidentally woke our parents up.”

Those were very nice indeed. Miles remembered them clearly. They used to watch the old steel samurai show together and he always fell asleep first, commonly on Wright’s shoulder. But then he woke up with a mustache drawn on his face with PERMANENT MARKER (Butz’ doing, ofcourse).

Edgeworth lightly chuckled at that memory.

‘And what does that have to do with now?’ He finally asked.

“C’mon! Sleeping together after a long night of fun, its exactly the same!”

‘…’

“You know what I mean!”, the other man said looking completely flustered. The idiot.

“But yeah, sometimes I do wonder how much of fun and memories we lost because of.. losing you for so long..” Phoenix finally muttered, almost to himself. It looked like he had thought a lot about it.

‘That’s true.. but atleast we’re reunited again’, he tried to reason.

“Haha, that’s true”, Phoenix faintly smiled.

“Well goodnight, Edgeworth.”

‘Goodnight, Wright’

꧁⎝ 𓆩༺✧༻𓆪 ⎠꧂

This had to be the worst nightmare Miles has ever experienced.

Not only did he get the memory of shooting his own father again, this time there was more.
Edgeworth was trapped in a cage, clown makeup plastered all over his face. His mentor stood before him. Bloodlust in his eyes, staring into his soul. If he wasn’t chained up, then he would’ve probably attacked him. Everyone gathered around him, laughing at the fallen prosecutor.

“You’re a foolish mistake. You don’t deserve the von Karma name.” Franziska said, disgusted to even talk to him.

“Did you really think I’ve ever liked you, pall? You’re nothing but a arrogant shrew”, Gumshoe yelled.

‘You reallyy changed Edgey.’ Larry stated, looking almost pitiful at him.

“It would’ve been better if you stayed dead, Edgeworth!” Phoenix finally shouted with tears in his eyes.

Suddenly everyone began shouting as a familiar figure started to go up to the cage.

‘Execute!’

‘Execute!’

‘Execute!’

The mysterious man stopped at the restrain, reaching for the lever in front of it.

“… you’re a fucking disgrace, Miles Edgeworth”

His father said, pulling to lever down. The ground beneath him started to open, letting him fall into the endless pit of void.

Miles woke up sweating. His heartbeat going way to fast. He felt horrible, anxious and-

“Hey Miles, you okay?” Phoenix asked, looking worried at the broken man.

Edgeworth didn’t know what came over him. But after that horrible nightmare, weeks of complete exhaustion and all that that had happened over the last 17 years, he suddenly hugged Wright as hard as he could.

And Phoenix didn’t say anything for once, but just hugged him back. Miles couldn’t help the tears running down his cheeks. He felt so fragile, so vulnerable.

Wright just started patting his back: “It’s okay, I’m here.”

‘I’m sorry Wright. I’m so sorry for everything’

“Its alright. Just breathe.”

They sat there for a while. Not saying anything, just embracing eachother in a comfortable silence.

Eventually, Miles finally fell asleep again, his head just on top of Phoenix’s chest, clinging to his arm like it was life support.

Edgeworth woke up to a nice winter morning. It was probably the first time this month he actually slept. To his surprise, he didn’t see Wright beside him, but on the balcony, drinking a cup of coffee while staring into the cloudy sky.

“Oh, hey Edgeworth, slept well?” The man yawned, still a bit tired.

‘Yes actually.. I suppose I did. Do you always go to the balcony in the morning?’

“I like to watch the sunrise. It’s beautiful at this time around.”

Edgeworth stood beside him, their fingers touching slightly.

‘.. thank you again, for tonight. It was nice to have someone beside me.’ Edgeworth finally said, not realising that he laid his hand on Phoenix’s.

“It’s okay, really. You deserve comfort too, you know.”

The other man grabbed his hand back, making their fingers interlock.

‘You called me Miles yesterday.’

“Wow, I’m surprised you even remember that. But yeah, I guess did, huh?”

Their eyes locked in with eachother. Staring at the other’s iris’.

“Phoenix..”

Suddenly, Wright felt a pair of soft lips on his. Years of tension, emotions and feelings all pulled into a kiss.

When they broke apart, they stared at eachother again.

Phoenix decided it was his turn to kiss him now, even longer than before.

“.. I love you Miles”

‘I love you too’
