The Ground Finds Its Brutal Way To Us

Summary:

The portal is closed, but at what cost? Rupert Giles mourns.

Notes:

The second in a trio of three fics answering a request by lycanpunk666 on Tumblr, who, for an ask meme, sent this:

I’m really interested in 4, 28, or 36 as prompts. All of these are angsty all of these are terrible but I think that 28 (“kiss as a lie” if memory serves) is the most intriguing to me. Please write whichever ship this prompt makes you think of, it also could very well be platonic.

This is the ficlet responding to 28, "As a lie." Thanks so much, Punk!

Work Text:

Buffy lays before Giles, dead. At peace. Content.

He lets the others go to her. Gives them their time. Eventually, the sea parts, and his compatriots let him have his turn.

Giles trembles.

"I don't know how to live in this world," Buffy had confessed to him, voice weighed down with enough sorrow that it shattered his heart. He knew that feeling; after all, she'd stopped him from suicide, four years ago. He'd been bereft at Jenny's loss. Buffy had knocked some sense into him before collapsing into a hug and he collapsed into grief, fire blazing beside them.

But… even so, he can't fault her. Not for this. He'd given everything; even killed a man for her, but it wasn't enough. He is never enough. Not when it matters.

He is not like Buffy.

Giles lies to himself, hopes beyond hope that she'll wake up. But... She doesn't.

He picks the girl up. He cradles her so softly, so tenderly, he regrets ever having been afraid to do so when she was still breathing. One hand braces her cheek. Giles leans forward, kisses Buffy's forehead.

The world will never know that its savior—his savior—rests in his arms.

Title from Hozier's "I, Carrion (Icarian)":

If the wind turns, if I hit a squall,
Allow the ground to find its brutal way to me.

Thanks to Calendiles Commotion and the Commotioners for helping me brainstorm for this response and for the other fics for this ask fill series!! Thanks especially to Ginger, who pointed out the duality between Buffy's "I don't want to die" in "Prophecy Girl" and her "I don't know how to live in this world" in "The Gift," both in conversation with me and via her amazing Gifset. Thanks, Ginger!!!

The motions that Giles takes are heavily inspired by a scene in "The Doctor's Daughter" from Season 4 of Doctor Who (2005), where...

SPOILERS... (Click to reveal!)

Well, I mean, I'm sure the moratorium on spoilers is out by this point, but JUST in case... Jenny (his daughter)'s death scene.

(You'll know EXACTLY what inspired this fic once you get there.) This scene had such an impact on me when I first saw it over a decade ago, and you can understand how it made sense to me for Giles to do the same for his surrogate daughter, as well.

I actually began the prompt before this, but that spiraled into a 2,000 word fic instead of just 500 words, so... I hope this double-drabble is able to hit where it hurts, even with its short length. For anyone curious, I don't think that Buffy was suicidal in the same way that Rupert was in "Passion," per se, but she was absolutely, at the least, passively wanting to die after "The Body," even if she wanted to be there for Dawn and the others. Giles, however, makes a logical jump, especially since he's HEAVILY projecting on her here. Still... Can you blame him? I sure don't.

I normally don't write about Season 5, in part because its exploration of grief hits so close to me. Still, it was really fascinating to see Giles's POV in one of the worst moments of his life.

If you'd like to drop by my Tumblr, feel free to send an ask to carryingstarlightinherwake ! Thank you so much for reading and for any comments! This fic ended up superceding the "Earshot" fic, but worry not - I'm almost done with it (and a bonus Deltarune mini-fic I'm working on too)! I'll see you all with the next fic, which will be inspired by "Earshot" and from Buffy's POV, soon!
