    Summary

Bobby Singer has been a close father figure for both the Winchester boys since their childhood. And over the years, the old hunter could proudly boast that there's no one that knew and or understood the brothers better than himself. But then there are things he wishes he never knew and sights he wished he'd never seen.

Or in simple words, Bobby's POV.

    Summary

Semi-retired, Dean Winchester finds that life post-Chuck is, in a word, liberating.

No longer threatened by an apocalypse every other day, he's fallen into a rhythm: Work, Sam, hunt, Sam, hobbies, Sam. Work again, hunt some more, hang with Sam. Woodwork in his shop; spend even more time with Sammy. Free weekend? Rinse. Repeat. Sammy.

Which isn't even all that abnormal. He's lived his whole life with the kid. Has raised and fed and cared for and sheltered and loved and watched die and—

And there's the problem. Maybe it's old age, maybe it's their being too...domestic. Whatever the case, Dean finds himself pondering and wondering and thinking way too many thoughts about his and Sam's relationship—just what, exactly, they are to each other.

As the summer progresses and the small town of Lebanon, Kansas, moves in its usual slow, steady pace, Dean Winchester builds a desk. Somehow, someway, this one act serves to answer his question and help remind him that not all families come in a wife and two-and-a-half kids packaging.

Sometimes, they come in flannel, blue jeans, and soft, warm eyes that express a thousand unspoken I love yous.

    Summary

For my father and my mother have foresaken me, but the Lord will take me in.
    - Psalm 27:10

    //

When Pastor Jim orders John onto an urgent case while he's in the middle of a perceived lead on the yellow-eyed demon, he sends Dean to take care of it for him... by enrolling him and Sam at the summer camp the monster they're hunting is threatening. While Dean tries to keep Sam away from the danger, solve the case, save the kids, and kill the monster, and not get himself sent home or CPS called on his absent father, Caleb gets wind of his mentor's latest genius parenting move and dives into the church camp trenches beside his best friend. However, the case is a complicated one, and thanks once again to Johnny's A+ Parenting, Dean is even more vulnerable to the monster he's hunting than they realized.

“I’m gonna go hit the books,” Dean informed and left before either of them could stop him.

“He hasn’t been taking it well,” Jack noted. Not a question, but an observation.

“How can you expect him too?” Sam asked and sighed heavily. “I don’t know if he’ll ever get over this. I honestly don’t think any of us will.”

Or Dean loses himself in his grief for Castiel, cursing himself for not being able to do anything to stop his death or to bring him back.

Sam watches him fall apart and does his best to be there for him.

Does it count as a midlife crisis when you buy a house and renovate it in secret, not telling your brother a single thing about it?

Well, Dean most certainly doesn't handle Cas' death very well and so somehow he ends up grieving in his own special way: by building a home and praying that one day he will share it with someone very particular.

Deep down Dean knows it's a futile hope and probably not really healthy to cling onto it so desperately, but at the end of the day dreams occasionally come true, even for a Winchester.

    Right?
