Stark Causalities

Summary:

When thirteen-year-old Peter Parker is torn from his universe, he believes all he has to do is find his way home. Instead, each new reality rejects him, carrying him onward as the multiverse struggles to repair itself.

Some worlds are familiar. Others are unrecognizable. None are his. As each jump carries him farther from the life he lost, Peter begins to realize his journey was never about finding his way home—it was about finding a new home.

Chapter Text

The afternoon was pleasantly cool; the kind of October day families lingered outdoors, but Mara Verran did not feel the breeze. Her focus was absolute, her posture unnervingly still as she watched eleven-year-old Morgan Stark. Morgan moved with a quiet confidence, inherited more from Pepper Potts than her father’s theatrical swagger, yet she possessed Tony’s expressive brown eyes. Mara, now twenty-two and shaped by a lifetime of AIM-fueled indoctrination, saw not a child but a biological bridge to the man she believed had poisoned her life.

Mara adjusted the small, handmade biopsy tool hidden in her palm. Her movements were surgical; she rarely wasted words or motion. As Morgan turned to chase a stray ball, Mara adjusted her trajectory with deliberate precision. The "bump" was choreographed—a glancing contact that felt like a clumsy stranger, but the micro-needle in the tool did its job in a fraction of a second.

"I’m sorry," Mara said, her voice level and controlled, clipped into a precise sentence.

"It's okay," Morgan replied, her natural curiosity and compassion making her offer a small, grounded smile. Mara did not return it. She broke eye contact sharply and walked away, already calculating the next phase.

Back at her warehouse lab—a secure facility filled with a fusion of improvised AIM technology and stolen Pym-tech elegance—Mara went to work. The lab was a testament to her hyper-analytical mind, organized with a perfectionism that made even small errors feel like failures. She placed Morgan's blood sample into a resonance processor. Years of near-constant contact with Tony during Morgan's infancy made her the richest readily available source of his residual biological markers. If anyone's sample could lead Mara back to Tony, it would be Morgan's.

She checked the Bio-Quantum Displacement Device (BQDD) on her wrist. The matte-black casing was slim, glowing veins pulsing beneath the surface. At its center, the fractured quantum regulator pulsed with shifting white-gold light as it completed its lock.

Mara tapped the shard twice. The world folded inward, a rising hum vibrating through her wrist as she was pulled backward through her own quantum anchor window.

She arrived in 2020, materializing near the Stark lake house. The device had worked exactly as designed, placing her within fifty feet of Tony Stark. He was there with infant Morgan, living the quiet life he had built after the Snap. He was isolated, his armor no longer a constant presence, and utterly unprepared for the danger that had just arrived.

Mara stepped out of the tree line.

Tony looked up from the porch. Morgan slept peacefully against his shoulder, one small hand curled around the collar of his shirt. The quiet life he'd built over the last five years had made him slower to assume danger, but not blind to it.

He rose as the woman approached, his gaze sweeping over her once, cataloging details out of habit.

"Hang on, Bug."

Without taking his eyes off the stranger, he crossed to the wicker bassinet tucked beside the porch swing and carefully laid Morgan inside. She stirred only long enough to sigh, tiny fingers stretching before settling around the corner of her blanket.

Tony rested a hand briefly on the edge of the bassinet, then turned back toward the woman.

His posture remained relaxed, but there was nothing casual about the way he watched her.

"Can I help you?"

"No."

She stopped at the foot of the porch.

"My name is Mara Verran."

Tony searched his memory and came up empty.

"Should I know that name?"

"You knew my father."

Tony waited.

"...Aldrich Killian."

Tony's expression tightened.

"My mother was Lysa."

Tony's expression tightened slightly, but he didn't interrupt.

"You destroyed both of their lives."

Silence.

"When Killian died, everything fell apart. My mother spent years trying to put our lives back together." Mara's voice never rose. "Then the Blip happened."

Tony's jaw clenched.

"When everyone came back..." She swallowed once, more from anger than grief. "A driver swerved to avoid someone rematerializing in the middle of the road."

Her eyes never left his.

"The car hit my mother instead."

Morgan stirred in the bassinet, letting out a sleepy fuss. Without taking his eyes off Mara, Tony reached back and rested a reassuring hand against her blanket until she settled again.

"You saved half the universe."

Mara's voice was flat.

"My mother never got to see it."

Tony closed his eyes for the briefest moment.

"I'm sorry."

"I don't want your apology."

"I know."

"You are the reason every terrible thing in my life happened." Her fingers tightened around the device in her hand. "If you hadn't destroyed Killian... if you hadn't brought everyone back... my mother would still be alive."

Tony was quiet for several long seconds.

Finally, he spoke.

"You came here to kill me."

"Yes."

"So your mother lives."

"Yes."

Tony nodded once, as though acknowledging the logic rather than agreeing with it.

"I understand why you believe that."

Mara frowned.

"But that's not how this works."

She stared at him.

"You can't fix your past." His voice remained calm. "You can only create another future."

He looked at the device in her hand, then back at her.

"You kill me here..." He gave a small shake of his head. "Your mother still dies. You just make a new branch where I don't."

Mara moved with terrifying precision.

There was no hesitation.

No triumph.

She fired once.

Tony staggered, surprise flashing across his face before he collapsed onto the porch. Behind him, Morgan began to cry, the sharp sound shattering the stillness.

Mara ignored it.

She knelt beside him, withdrew a sterile collection vial, and drew a fresh blood sample. She sealed the vial inside the BQDD's containment chamber, stood, and activated the return sequence.

The warehouse materialized around her with its familiar mechanical hum.

Her eyes went immediately to the photograph on the workbench.

Her mother still smiled back at her from behind the cracked glass.

Nothing had changed.

Mara spun to the nearest monitor and pulled up the historical records.

Anthony Edward Stark.

Deceased. October 17, 2023.

Exactly as before.

"No..."

She checked another database.

Then another.

Nothing.

The timeline she had left remained exactly as she remembered it.

Her breathing became ragged.

She had killed Tony Stark...

...and her mother was still dead.

With an enraged scream, she swept the workbench clean. Glass shattered across the concrete floor. A monitor crashed sideways, followed by another. Tools clattered in every direction as years of careful organization disappeared beneath blind fury.

"It was supposed to work!"

Silence answered her.

Chest heaving, Mara stared at the containment chamber. Inside, Tony Stark's blood rested exactly where she had placed it.

Slowly, instinct reclaimed control.

If killing Tony Stark couldn't save her own past...

Then no timeline containing a Tony Stark was safe.

She picked up the vial, her expression hardening.

"Fine."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I can't save my mother."

She closed her hand around the sample.

"But I can make sure no Tony Stark ever gets the chance to ruin another life."
