Chapter Text
<Wednesday’s POV>
Soulmates. A dreadful concept, in Wednesday’s objectively correct opinion. There was something about being forced to meet the same stranger every time she was unconscious, and that stranger supposedly being the ‘perfect match’ for her, that didn’t sit right with her. She never wanted for a soulmate, and knew she never would.
The only problem? Her thirteenth birthday was coming soon. The next day, to be exact. Since she was born later in the year, it was likely that when she slipped into the cold embrace of unconsciousness, she would just open her eyes to what she would consider a personal hell.
This was what was keeping her awake, lying restless in her bed. The thought of being unable to slip Fate’s grasp, unable to have a choice in the person she would be expected to spend the rest of her life with, forbade rest.
She lay there, atop her sheets, and closed her eyes. She knew sleep was inevitable, but still, she persisted in her rebellion against it. Having her eyes shut while doing so, however, would prove to be a challenge. She could feel herself lose control of her thoughts, and they were beginning to make no sense.
Life is strange in how quickly it changes, she thought. One second, all she could see was the back of her eyelids, and the next, she was staring at a blonde girl with apparel so colourful, it felt like a personal attack to her eyes.
“Howdy, Soulmate!”

<Enid’s POV>
15 minutes earlier…
Enid’s always wanted a soulmate. The idea seemed nice—no matter what, there’ll be someone always in your life, whether you like it or not.
She sat at her desk, crossed out October 12th on her calendar, and looked at the alarm clock on the table.
Shit, she thought as she stared at the numbers flashing 23:54, it’s getting late, and I can’t sleep in tomorrow, since it’s a full moon and whatnot…
She rushed through her night routine and toppled into her bed, willing herself into sleep, but it was of no use; she wasn’t tired enough. Her body was practically buzzing with adrenaline. Tomorrow was a full moon, after all.
She tossed and turned, trying to find a comfy position to sleep, but to no avail. She sighed, turned to her side, and pulled the covers over her head. Even though she couldn’t see the clock, she knew it was well past midnight, and that she’d probably sleep in anyways.
Finally, her eyelids began to feel heavy and droop. Just as they closed completely, they opened of their own will. She blinked. Once, twice. The sheer whiplash of going from pure darkness to a bright field of grass, boulders, and wildflowers does that to you.
Just as she thought, is this a lucid dream?, she noticed the figure standing in front of her. A girl. Somewhat short, deathly pale, eyes the colour of too-strong coffee, dressed entirely in monochrome, but still a girl. This is… my soulmate dream? This girl is my soulmate? This girl?
Enid’s mind began to multitask; a third processing the fact that her soulmate is a girl, another third considering what her mother’s reaction would be, and the last trying to make a good impression.
“Howdy, Soulmate!”, Enid blurted. Howdy? Seriously? Who even says ‘howdy’ nowadays? She chided herself in her mind, but maintained the appearance.
“I’m Enid Sinclair, what’s your name?”
The girl standing in front of her seemed to consider something, and apparently having decided, spoke.
“Wednesday Addams.”
“Is it ‘cause you were born on a Wednesday?”
“No, I was born on a Friday. I was named after a line in my mother’s favourite poem.”
“That’s cool,” Enid grinned, “I don’t think I was named after anything, but I was born on a Wednesday.”
The girl, unimpressed, looked around for a bit.
Enid sat on a nearby boulder.
“Take a seat,” Enid said, patting the space beside her, “we’ll be here until one of us wakes up, so standing the whole time would be tiring.”
Wednesday glared for a moment, and sat beside her.
This is my soulmate. I’m going to meet her every night for the next, what, five years? So I’ll get to know her better!
But when most people had a few walls to get through, Wednesday seemed to be a whole fortress.
Oh, this was going to be difficult…
