    Summary

Uncle Ludwig recites the rules mechanically, as if each point is a cog in a complex machine and he makes sure to grease it every day when he wakes and every night as he lays asleep. I won’t be surprised if he recounts them in his sleep too.

He points at my lunch. “Throw that out.”

    “Why?” I respond tepidly.

“Meat attracts the animals,” he deadpanned. “And not all of them can be taken down by gun.”

A faint scar cuts down Uncle Ludwig’s jugular down to his collarbone. And I wonder if whatever causes the haunted look in his eyes lingers at the edge of the forest, or if the trapping silence just reminds him of it.

My appetite feels unsatiated. Not my appetite for food—albeit Uncle’s warm welcome manages to curb any idea of eating—but by the new set of questions sprouting in the back of my mind like a weed on fertile ground.

Till spends the summer before his college freshman year at his uncles' place in the woods. While he was hoping for a peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle of the city before he gets bombarded with academics, he ends up learning more than he could chew.
