"Have you talked with our teacher's grandson? He brought flowers today," Mane changes the subject easily, and Flame probably allows the conversation to flow in another direction.
"Nuh uh." Mane huffs. "What kind of flowers grow in winter?"
"I dunno. It was like origami?"
"And why bring flowers at all if they're not real?"
"I dunno!" Flame turns his head with a very displeased expression on his face, and Mane chuckles. "Talk to him."
"Why?"
"I think you'll be friends." Flame knows this isn't true. Every kid he tried to befriend ended up laughing at him, fighting, and never talking again. And he doesn't want to try again, because it's stupid to expect something new from something you know never changes. "What is this face?"
Flame turns away, turning his attention back to the toy. His tail, without his permission, twitches slightly. "Nothing."

Flame doesn't like annoying people and doesn't want to have friends in general. At some point in his life, a silly boy with a loud giggle appears and constantly drags him along. Maybe this child is who he needed.
