Waiting to attack Shiganshina, Reiner indulges in a fantasy of homecoming.
In the morning, they bathe (hot water at last, by the nine). They eat, ravenous after five years subsisting off of cabbage and watery gruel and coarse bread. Bertholdt savours the tinned beef, the soft white bread with its chemical aftertaste, and the waxy ration kit chocolate bar like it’s a feast. Reiner passes him his foiled-wrapped packet. Presses it into his palm.
When they're home, he’ll buy a box of truffles and hand feed them to Bertholdt. Reiner will stand in line with all the real Marleyans, and nobody will be able to stop him. He’ll get a box with red and white stripes and the Di Bruno's Chocolatier logo in curling gold script, the chocolates nestled in tissue paper like tiny treasures. They'll stretch out on his little wooden bed in his mother's house, under the old film posters and the Warrior Programme propaganda he used to tack to the crumbling plaster walls back when he idolised the Warriors and becoming a titan holder was just a little boy's dream. He’ll pop the chocolate into Bertholdt's eager mouth.
